The Great Atlantian Cheese Feast: How to build a menu around products (specifically cheese) provided by other artisans so as to showcase their work. So you want to do something AMAZING for your feast! And you have all these ideas! And no time to do it yourself. How do you get other people to help you make what you need OR use what they make? The Feast at Ymir 2018 was the Great Atlantian Cheese Feast - nearly all the cheese was made by hand by an SCA member. This class will discuss how I planned it and worked the menus to showcase the other cheesemakers. Who knows, there might even be snacks.

Learn the basics of rapier melee combat and tactics

Tired of sewing T-tunics or following someone else's pattern? Ready to take the next step and make your own custom pattern but don't know where to start? Do you want to make a sideless surcote "master" pattern and adapt it for the 13th, 14th or even 15th century? Do you want to make the 13th Cyclas? Then this class is for you! Participants will select a surcote "syle" from period iconography, take key measurements, and learn how to draft freehand or with helpful tools (triangles and French Curves). This is intended as a hands-on, pattern drafting "make and take" class with participants going home with a custom paper pattern for a sideless surcote/ Cyclas.

Have you ever finished a garment, put it on, and discovered it just... wasn't right? The sleeves wouldn't bend, it didn't drape nicely, or it wrinkled in big folds? In this class, we will be discussing ease, fit, and how to change the way you measure to improve the function and appearance of the garb you pattern. Please bring a measuring tape and something to write with. Students will leave with a full set of measurements and a detailed list of pattern drafting resources.

lecture and hands on class exploring klosterstitch embroidery throughout the middle ages. Wool poly-chrome work not to be confused with the kloster block stitch found in modern Hardanger embroidery. This class is suitable for all skill levels. please bring a 6" hoop and a small pair of scissors, all other materials along with a choice of design options will be provided as part of the kit fee.

This class will cover the basic methods and stitches used to create Punto in Aria (literally: stitches in the air in Italian) which is the first needle lace style to be created completely detached from the fabric ground. Students will need either really good eyesight or prosthetic eye enhancement (glasses.)

Step by step of gothic leather bookbinding process popularized in the late 14th century. We will discuss how to plant and grow varieties of roses that were grown in period. I will cover where to find period varieties, how to plant and care for them, what to do about pests (both insect and diseases), and, if there is time, propagating rose plants.

This class will focus on the Icelandic Family Saga Njala Saga. Topics under discussion will include but not be limited to family feuds, law, religion, and the supernatural.

Building period-style target arrows with self-nocks, custom cut and whipped fletching, and period-style points. Information on using peafowl feathers and new Vermil-brand period nocks. All are welcome, but this class does not cover basic techniques and is best for archers who already make their own arrows.

Class will consist of 20 minute presentation first presented at the "Current Research in Textile Archaeology along the Nile" seminar January 21, 2019 and then continue with further examination of images of extant items.

This time we turn the tables and class participants judge a typical A&S competition using actual entries. Each participant will judge using the official judging sheets and rubrics for each entry, focusing on the scoring part of the judging sheet. This class is a good primer on how to set-up and run an A&S competition for a local group.

A survey of 15th and 16th c Highland and Lowland dress for both men and women. The hand-out includes written descriptions from period sources, 35 photos/images from Scottish museums or re-enactment groups, and other useful references.

This class will take a tour through the art, literature, armor, chronicles, and commentators of the time to dig at the deeper meanings behind the revolutionary fashion changes of the latter half of the 14th century. So, grab your tightest hose and join the journey back to the birth of fashion.

This class will go through the process of laying out the curves needed for either a vertical or horizontal sundial. We will use graphical methods so no math is required. The technique is period and relatively easy to learn. While you do not need to actually draw a dial in the class I will be going through the steps required and will assist anyone who wants to try. In order to draw the curves you will need a pencil, paper tablet, a compass, a straight edge (ruler), and a protractor.

This class will be discussing hand carving tools and how different materials respond to them. While many of the carving tools in period may look alike, the materials they are used on react far differently from eachother. Proper technique, tools and an understanding of your material will help you move fluently from one material to another. We will be looking at wood, bone, horn, ivories (both vegetable and mammal). We will also discuss other materials such as soapstone, amber, jet and sandstone. Materials will be on hand so you can see what actually happens to the material as the instructor is explaining the different techniques. Because of the shortage of tools and materials, most of the class will be observation and discussion only. The instructor will have some materials and tools available for you to try your hand at in order to appreciate the uniqueness of the material. We will have samples of carved pieces in different materials by the instructor, as well. If you are looking at getting into carving in the near or far future, then this class is the perfect primer to help you choose the proper tools, materials and be able to approach it with some understanding of how the two will work together in your hands. Lord Valdis of Gotland is an accomplished carver, currently specializing in horn, bone and ivories. With over 30 years of wood working experience and almost 20 years working with horn, bone, ivory, amber, jet and stone. Valdis has an in depth understanding of how each material reacts to tools and the experience of a self taught carver that made many mistakes in tool purchases, usage and techniques. Take this rare opportunity to learn as Valdis walks through each material and their characteristics and the hand tools that turn your lump of raw material into a work of art.

Students must bring their own viking (mora) working knife (not Seax) with blade 5" or less. they will cut out, carve, form and sew up the style of sheaths found in the York Archaeological excavations.

Russian pearl embroidery class. All materials will be provided. We will work on the piece, that could be used as a glass cover, a gift or as a favor.

Cryptography was experiencing a boom in public awareness right at 1600. By the time of Charles I; puzzle solving and sending secret messages was popular pass time with the upper class and even the Royalty. Charles I even kept a strongbox containing enciphered and deciphered. I hope he wins the battle of Naseby and nobody breaks open that box! Oops. The ciphers in use at the turn of the century provide insight into the development of ciphers throughout Period. Would you like to know more?

Learn proven methods of resolving conflict between two people, both as a participant and a mediator. You will be able to take home two simple processes that can be used to facilitate a conversation between two people intending to clear up a conflict. Examples will be given and at least one practice conversation will be done during class. Methods based on the “Clearing Model” from Woman Within International with additional material from the book Crucial Conversations. The new SCA Anti-Bullying Policy has brought to light the importance of resolving conflicts ourselves before harsh consequences result. SCA members, officers, and leaders of all kinds can benefit from using these methods. I learned these techniques from over 20 years working as a volunteer officer and participant in the Woman Within program (www.womanwithin.org) and close ties with the ManKind Project program (www.mkp.org).

For centuries various European societies resolved some of their greatest legal disputes through a procedure where two people tried to slaughter each other. This class aims to address a single question. Why? Why in the name of all that is just and at least slightly sensible would people, cultures, and entire kingdoms agree to this? In the process of answering this question we’ll look at the various techniques and legal practices that marked these trials, specific cases which were resolved by combat, and the lasting legacy of this practice on our own system of justice.

This class will look at the design and construction of Diptych Sundials. I will discuss the materials used and how the components were fabricated including my efforts at reproducing them. I will also go over the period guild regulations and discuss various period designs.
