Description
The class will explore the role of coastal, marine, and celestial geography in shaping the navigational practice of Northern Europe, the Mediterranean, and the Pacific. Simon will discuss techniques for navigating without a magnetic compass, including the use of the "sun compass" and feldspar by the Vikings, and the techniques of Polynesian and Micronesian navigators. The class will explore how ship construction and navigational practice developed differently in Northern and Southern Europe in the Early and High Middle Ages.
