Course Category History

Description
Peter Abelard lived from c.1079-1142, and may rightly be called The Most Interesting Man of the 12th Century. He has been remembered by many for his scandalous love affair with Heloise d'Argenteuil, but he was also one of his generation's most preeminent philosophers and theologians. While having some fun with the, ahem, more salacious aspects of his life, this class will also look at why he is an important figure in the transition into the intellectual life of the High Middle Ages. For anyone building a persona around the scribal, literary, or scholarly arts, knowledge of Abelard and the circles in which he roamed and left his mark are essential. This class will be offered via Zoom and recorded for later viewing.
