Description
Ptolemy’s Almagest was the premier scientific text on the motions of the stars for over a millennium. This class will discuss the successes of Ptolemaic system, the scientific principles and philosophy that underlie its assumptions, and the problems that arise from its use. We will look at the instruments, the methods of calculation and proof, and selections of Ptolemy’s text and poetry to understand the purpose of Ptolemy’s work. We will also briefly discuss the ways in which this system changed in the centuries before being overturned by the Heliocentric models of Copernicus, Kepler, and Galileo. This is primarily a history class, you do NOT need to be good at math to take this class.
