Description
Many folktales and fairy tales can be found as far back as the first century. They started out as oral traditions and at some point were put into writing. In spite of their oral origins, it is interesting to see how they appear in countries near and far. Can you imagine how they changed in the telling and retelling and from country to country. In addition, there are so many of them that a classification system has been developed. We will look at example folktales and fairy tales from each genre and discuss their similarities and differences. We will also look at what makes a story a folktale or fairy tale and discuss how they differ from legends. We will also look at how they are written, i.e. whether they are a poem, a narrative, or just a story told to children and adults. (Children are welcome to attend.)
