An exploration of the first English translation of "Ryori Monogatari"--the story of food. Published in 1643 (though some scholars say the original may have been written as early as 1610), it is the first true recipe book that find, and a key source in helping us unravel pre-modern Japanese food. It is equally interesting for what it says as what it doesn't. There are recipes with clear ties to European dishes, though most are purely Japanese. In this hour we will briefly go over the translation, which is now online and available for anyone to use.
