Description
During the reign of Elizabeth of York, Henry VIII's mother, a bonnet style unique to English women appeared. It's exact shape - initially a sharply angled peak over the forehead and heavy black veil brightened only by a strip of ornately decorated fabric - evolved over the subsequent 50 years but remained fashionable, as evidenced by the monumental brasses and carved stone effigies preserved in English churches. We will examine the shape of this distinctive bonnet, theorize about the materials and construction methods necessary to recreate it, and review the steps used by the teacher to reconstruct a bonnet shape like the effigy in the church at Godshill, Isle of Wight.
