On Writing and Arranging Music for Harps
Harper An Cu
Instructor's Kingdom: Atlantia, Time Zone: EST
4:30 PM - 5:30 PM
The harp is a lovely instrument, ancient in origin and ethereal in sound, but it can be very challenging to write music for. Contrary to popular belief among many modern composers and musicians, modern-style piano sheet music is not always possible on a harp (for instance, we use eight digits, not all ten!), especially a period harp. This class will briefly cover the evolution of the harp and its significance, the anatomy and range of most period harps, the techniques used to play a period harp, and -- most importantly -- the restrictions that any composer must consider when writing for a harper! If you have a piece you are working on that you'd like me to briefly look at, go ahead and bring it!
