|This is an introduction to the Irish form of Hnefatafl, a board game popular throughout Northern Europe in Viking times. Brandubh is the smallest form of Hnefatafl to survive; it is played on a board with 7x7 cells; with a "Branan" (Hnefa/King), his four companions, and eight attackers. Games are short and fast, with roughly equal chances for the Branan to escape, or to be captured by his foes. This workshop incorporates new research; new documentary, archaelogical, and interpretive evidence. Four Brandubh boards have been found in Scotland as well. The class will begin with a quick historical overview, then a demonstration game or two; then Q&A and coaching as students play on their own. This class will not be recorded.
