This is a class for bards and composers who would like to write original music in a medieval style. In the Middle Ages, composers played by a slightly different set of rules, but their music still resonates with listeners today. In this class, we'll take a look at those rules and how to apply them to come up with beautiful, medieval-sounding melodies of our own.
This course will cover common scales (modes) and melodic riffs from the Middle Ages that you can use to write melodies that sound medieval, rather than modern. Time permitting, we can also cover additional topics, such as medieval approaches to accompaniment and tuning. We will talk about some basic music theory concepts, but no prior knowledge of music theory is required, and you need not be able to read music to participate. |
