Description
Of all the traditional musical instruments of the Ryukyu Kingdom (modern-day Okinawa), the sanshin holds pride of place as the quintessential Okinawan instrument. This class will discuss the history of the sanshin, describe the instrument, and place it in cultural context. I will also focus on the written notation of the sanshin, called kunkunshi, and talk about how it relates to medieval Chinese musical notation. This class will not be recorded.
