Gregorian Chant was the basis for all Western European Music. This class examines the structure, symbols, neumes, and rhythmical indicators in chant notation. We will also explore its origins, characteristics, and context in relation to the medieval mindset and liturgical use. The class will culminate with students singing chant from the period notation (neumes). (Class will not be recorded) |
