Music Notation
Description
An overview of the basic concepts of modern music notation. Students will learn to haltingly, but accurately, decode unfamiliar music. We will use electronic keyboards or keyboard apps to explore modern transcriptions of SCA period music. Examples will come from a time period ranging from the Middle Ages to "fashionably late" Early Stuart England. The focus of this class is hands-on practice of basic note-reading skills. I do not plan to record this class. Students will need access to an electronic keyboard, piano, or keyboard app on a device with a large enough screen to allow easy interaction with the virtual keyboard. They will need to download and print the class handout before the start of class.
