|Instead of the traditional SCA "scroll", consider the more authentic form of the Medieval legal document. We will look at the characteristics of British royal charters/letters patent -- mainly those pertaining to the creation of peers -- from the period of about 1100-1600 with an eye to their design and intrinsic beauty. We will discuss the appropriate wording, lettering, how to prevent forgery and tampering, and seal application that make a document legally binding. Students will receive a PowerPoint document with examples from the period. Students interested in only a broad overview may treat this as a 1 hour class and exit after the introductory material is presented. The class will be recorded.
