Sign Language for Fighting Activities
Instructor's Kingdom: Atlantia, Time Zone: EST
2:00 PM - 3:00 PM
Hand gestures have been used in sports refereeing for more than a century. I propose that rather than invent new ones, the fighting community should consider already existing signs in American Sign Language to supplement voice calls. The goal is to both improve communication on the list field where the space can be large and noisy, and to make fighting spaces more inclusive to people who are deaf or hard of hearing.
This class will teach a small number of signs in ASL specially selected for combat activities in the SCA. We will also cover variants of each sign and considerations for using them in the context of SCA martial activities. The presentation will be a small number of slides followed by a physical demonstration by the instructor. It may be useful for students to have their camera on for this class, but it is not required. No prior experience with ASL is required. This class will not be recorded.
