Description
In pre-17th century Europe, the Autumn Damask rose was only variety of rose known to bloom more than once in a growing season. I will talk about how analysis of this rose's DNA has shed new light of the what rose varieties served as ancestors of this ancient hybrid, its likely area of origin in central Asia thousands of years ago, and how it ended up growing in Europe and Mediterranean basin during our period of study.
