The Chinese invented gunpowder in the 9th Century. Its use spread westward by the 13th Century. Where the Chinese focused primarily on bombs and rockets, firearms development took off in Europe. This course discusses the progression from medieval hand-cannons, up to the development of flint-and-steel systems in the late 1500s. We will also look at the evolution of gunpowder chemistry and production.
