Giving and Receiving Feedback in the SCA
The SCA is full of people who desperately want to share their knowledge. We aren't always great at doing so in a way that helps the receiver of said knowledge. In this class, we'll explore a couple methods to give feedback without coming off as a jerk, and we'll talk about how to receive feedback and incorporate it into your normal practice. We'll use examples from marshal activities, A&S competitions, and service opportunities - valuable info regardless of your chosen SCA path. |

Medieval Dagger Play III: Fiore's Guide to Getting Close to Your Friends
The largest section of Fiore's 1409 combat system manual is the section on dagger plays. Continuing from parts I & II, this class will examine approximately the third quarter of the plays by examining the plates and translated text as well as pre-recorded video of the instructor performing the play. Most of the plays feature an unarmed defender dealing with a dagger-wielding attacker and showing them the error of their ways. Fiore says, "If I want a dagger, I will take yours." Due to significant grappling, there is very limited application of these techniques to SCA combat forms. Tips for slow speed, safe, performance of the plays will be provided as well. |

SCA Signs (Signs Created by SCAdians)
Like many large hobby groups, new jargon is created to better facilitate communication among members by creating new words or adapting existing ones to describe concepts, activities, or objects unique to their shared interest. A Pelican within the Society is not the same thing as a pelican in the modern world. Unique signs were created by Signing Communities within the SCA, particularly our Deaf Populace, meaning we have SCA jargon for both spoken and signed languages that do not mean the same thing (or anything!) outside of an SCA context. This class is to show how these signs are standardized within the Known World. Accessibility is not possible if signs are made up on a whim. This class is here to demonstrate that the SCA has standardized signed jargon that parallels our spoken jargon. |

Detangling Medievalism
From the very invention of the 14th century term "the Dark Ages", through Scott's Ivanhoe and Disney's Sleeping Beauty, and into the present day, Medievalism has been using, referencing, interpreting, and creating the very concept of "Medieval". But here in the SCA, Medievalism isn't simply an academic discipline. It's entangled with everything we do. • Come along as I shine a light on some of these entangling vines, if not to hack them down, then to follow them from root to tendril, and see where they have—and still do—influence us. • The best way to do our best work is to be aware. |

Conflict Resolution Methods - People not Heraldry
Learn proven methods of resolving conflict between two people, both as a participant and a mediator. You will be able to take home two simple processes that can be used to facilitate a conversation between two people intending to clear up a conflict. Examples will be given and at least one practice conversation will be done during class. Methods based on the Clearing Model from Woman Within International with additional material from the book Crucial Conversations and The Conscious Leadership Group (https://conscious.is). The SCA Anti-Bullying Policy has brought to light the importance of resolving conflicts ourselves before harsh consequences result. SCA members, officers, and leaders of all kinds can benefit from using these methods.
I learned these techniques from over 20 years working as a volunteer officer and participant in the Woman Within program (www.womanwithin.org) and close ties with the ManKind Project program (www.mkp.org).
This class is especially recommended for SCA Seneschals. |

"Trekking" with Medieval-inspired gear (or "Building my Ranger trial kit")
While recreational backcountry camping/backpacking is generally not appropriate for the time period covered by the SCA (sleeping outside only became something some people in Western society did for fun in the late 19th century), it can be a lot of fun to get out in the woods in garb with only what you can carry on your back, cook over a campfire, and sleep in wool blankets under the stars. Backcountry camping in the style of a previous time period has long been popular with those portraying 19th century Mountain men and 18th century longhunters, but those interested in earlier periods are beginning to give it a try, as well! This course will discuss a basic framework for putting together camping gear based on extant artifacts and medieval representations of hunters, pilgrims, and soldiers (with a focus will be on artifacts and artwork from Europe in the 10th - 15th centuries), as well as my personal experience with the "Ranger trial" - a 3 day, 2 night backpacking trip open to members of the various SCA forestry guilds. |

The Loch Glashan ‘Crannog Bag’
In 1960-61, the crannog at Loch Glashan (mid-Argyll, Scotland) was excavated under the supervision of archaeologist Jack Scott. Among the finds, some quite large leather fragments were recovered – the remains of a leather jerkin . . . maybe. Around 2000, during an attempted restoration of the jerkin, it became apparent that the ‘jerkin’ was actually a ‘satchel’, perhaps the carrying bag for a religious manuscript. This class will explore the interpretive journey of the recovered leather fragments, and my attempt at the recreation of what has become known as the ‘Crannog Bag’. |

Animal Trials in Medieval Europe
Curious to learn about criminal canines, lawbreaking locusts, and other farmyard felons? In Medieval Europe, humans were not the only creatures subject to prosecution by secular and ecclesiastical authorities. There are documented cases of animals being put on trial in secular courts for criminal offenses or being censured by the church in religious courts! In this class we will explore this remarkable phenomena by discussing the differences between civil (secular) and canon (religious) trials of animals, as well as actual cases brought against non-human offenders. |

Riding from the Books: Riding Before a Prince & Rossfechten— Martial A&S
While the image of a jousting knight is iconic to the European Renaissance for equestrianism, there were many more disciplines of refined riding that treated the martial skill more like an art -- similar to dancing. Come learn about two of them-- what we call in the SCA "Riding Before a Prince" and "Rossfechten". These two disciplines are based off of extant riding manuals, and while there are competitions of them at SCA equestrian events, they are based in a martial A&S background. This class will cover a basic overview of the history of each activity, starting activities, next steps, and some additional A&S resources.
Riding Before a Prince is a 16th-17th century precursor to modern dressage that originated in Italy before expanding to France, England, and more -- remember, nobles love fancy prancing ponies!
Rossfechten is likened to "rapier on horseback" -- one of the seminal works is Fiore de Liberi! Lightly armored riders learn to fight each other with swords (and sometimes spears/lances) while delicately maneuvering their horses. As of 11/25/2024, Rossfechten is still an experimental program in the SCA.

The Medieval University
If you think the SCA is an organization that practices creative anachronism, consider your local College or University. Anyone you know in the mundane world who has been through a graduation ceremony has also played medieval dress-up.
The University as educational institution developed in western Europe starting in the 11th century and still exists in a remarkably similar form today. Some have even directly linked the peculiarities of governance, structure, and privileges that are part of the University to specific scientific and intellectual advancement in the regions where they were present.
Some of the exceptional things about the way higher education works in modern times are indeed rigid traditions that have extended unbroken since the Middle Ages. However, you’ll see that personalities and proclivities of students and professors today are much the same as they have been for the past thousand years, and there’s a reason the university system fits both groups so well.
In this class, we’ll look at the history of the university, the reasons it came to exist the way it did, and what still persists in education today. We will discuss the background of students and teachers, their daily life, what they studied, and the rules under which they lived. Many institutions in society had stakes in universities in service of their religious, economic, social, and political goals. We’ll see how church, state, and monied interests shaped the universities and were shaped by them to further their own needs. |

The Astrolabe
The Astrolabe is a mechanical instrument that can be used to calculate the positions of the stars and sun in the sky.
Astrolabes are a visible part of a deep tradition of science and mathematics that was known before the Middle Ages. Appearing before 100 BCE, the technology advanced significantly in the Islamic world. As it developed, many other calculating instruments were incorporated into it, and it became a major teaching tool for astronomers as it proliferated throughout Africa, Europe, and India.
In this class, we’ll look at animations of the night sky to see the astronomical principles and problems known at the time. The breadth of locations where astrolabes were constructed shows just how widespread advanced knowledge of astronomy was. We’ll see a bit of the mathematics needed to construct it and what calculations it can be used for. Metal astrolabes also became status symbols, and the beauty of their mathematical patterns were embellished by instrument makers to produce works of art that survive to this day. |
