Pythagorean intonation - making medieval music sparkle
In medieval Europe, instruments and voices were tuned using a different system than the "equal temperament" we've grown up thinking of as "in tune." While this ancient intonation tends to make the chords we're used to sound a bit "off," it makes music written during that time absolutely sparkle! When done right, Pythagorean intonation doesn't just make medieval music sound "right," it can make the performer, the audience, and the entire room vibrate along with the music.
In this course, you will learn all about this mathematically pure intonation. You'll learn how intervals are formed, how they differ from modern, equal-tempered intervals, why we've moved from Pythagorean intonation toward equal temperament, and what makes this intonation so special. We'll be covering all of this from the ground up, so no prior knowledge of music theory is required. All are welcome!
For singers interested in practicing Pythagorean intonation, please see 11 AM "Pythagorean intonation for singers - tuning with your face." |

Pythagorean intonation for singers - tuning with your face
Prerequisite: Students taking this class MUST take 10 AM "Pythagorean intonation - making medieval music sparkle" before attending this class.
This is a practical session for singers. It's one thing to hear and understand what makes those pure intervals so special, but quite another to produce mathematically perfect intervals yourself! Fortunately, you need not spend agonizing hours singing into a tuner to nail Pythagorean intonation. In this class, you will practice singing intervals against a drone, so that you can hear and feel (literally with the bones of your face) when you hit that perfect Pythagorean interval. We'll explore the intervals of the Dorian mode, and make the room sing and our faces buzz!
This course is for confident singers with good pitch. You should be able to hear a random series of 3 notes, and sing back those same notes. We will be learning a singing technique that may be different than how you typically sing, but will allow you to sing with the resonance necessary to lock in pure intervals during practice. This a continuation of the first class which is an introduction to Pythagorean tuning. Singers MUST be present for the first class to participate in the second, to ensure that we're all on the same page. If you are just interested in learning about Pythagorean intonation, but aren't yet ready to try it out, please see "Pythagorean intonation - making medieval music sparkle." |

Seeing Through the Veil on Roman Matronas.
History largely takes place in the public sphere. In ancient Rome, public participation was absolutely forbidden to women. So what were they doing?
Women's power in Roman politics was an ace in the hole. The matrona of a family might be either arm candy or an enforcer, an inter-family bargaining chip or the dealer. Necessity and personal pride kept these as unknowns to the public, and to history.
In this class we will examine the Roman taboo on public participation for women. We will review the limitations that this placed on women's lives, as well as the power that could be held within, and the fates of a few who stepped outside, those lines. |

Queens and Queenship in the Middle Ages
In the SCA, queens are everywhere, whether as consorts, regnant, former, or about to become one. Add to that Disney movies and everyone has an idea about what a queen is and does. But is that accurate? Medieval queens had a number of important functions for their kingdoms over and above providing the proverbial Heir and Spare. For example, during the Anglo-Saxon and Ottonian periods the queen took care of the treasury and sometimes used it to raise one or another individual to the throne as king. They also held cities, towns, or castles during sieges or went on military campaigns with the king. This class will examine the many varied roles queens in the Middle Ages filled and her unique status in a kingdom. It will also look at how the concept of queenship changed and evolved. |

Simple Saint Birgitta Cap Make-and-Take
In this 2 hour class, we will talk briefly about the history of what is commonly known as the Saint Birgitta Cap. This white linen cap/coif is seen on women in medieval art from approximately 1250-1500 across much of mainland Europe. We will then pattern, cut, and assemble our caps by hand. Once complete, this cap can be worn alone or as a base for veils, hats, and more complex head coverings.
This class does not cover any of the embroidery or embellishments found on the reliquary cap of Saint Birgitta, but rather takes the student through the construction of a simple, unembellished cap such as the one seen on the middle figure here: https://www.photo.rmn.fr/archive/07-506175-2C6NU0CH4XYM.html.
MATERIALS/FEE: There is no fee associated with this class if students bring their own materials. Students will need approximately 1/2 yard of middle weight white linen (52-60" width), matching thread, needles, scissors, chalk, rulers. I will have some back-up sewing supplies available.

Translating ancient texts to build performance pieces
Lanea will teach the most awkward and frustrating thing she can: the process of creating a literal English translation of an ancient text, and then rewriting that translation into poetic English for use as a performance piece. Our exemplar is a 9th C Irish tale about the lucky man who owned both the best hound and the best pig that ever were, and how his richness led to anarchy and mayhem. We will discuss dealing with declensions, outmoded prose and poetic forms, seeking poetic brevity and power, and understanding the cultural shifts between the original audience and the one you would like to reach with your translations. Figuratively speaking, we will make a great feast from a dead boar and a funny story from a murderous grudge match, and we'll laugh while it happens. |

Writing Workshop: Writing Kharjas
The Kharja is a couplet that functions as the concluding lines to the medieval Andalusian poetry form of the muwashshah. We will discuss the form and look at examples of in-period kharjas. Students will compose their own karjas and share them with each other on a voluntary basis. Adjusting Stockings for Custom Fit
Modern knitting patterns nearly always come with recommended
yarn, needle, and stitch gauge recommendations to ensure
proper fit. Period patterns, or adjustments to modern patterns for different yarn, needles, or fit, can therefore flummox even experienced knitters, especially when any element of geometry is involved. Adjusting gauge for a scarf to adapt to smaller or larger gauge is fairly straightforward; adjusting gauge for stockings, however, can be a bit more tricky. In this class, we'll talk through the
different elements of a stocking pattern that can be adjusted to allow for custom fit stockings with any yarn, needle, and to fit any individual. The class will be fairly
math-focused, but I'll provide you with as many ways to make your brain bend most easily around the calculations and considerations.
I'll use Nancy Bush's Stockings with Clocks pattern as the
example as I've made multiple pairs of stockings using it for different individuals, in a range of heights (mid-calf (as the pattern is written), knee-high, and over-the-knee)
and calf/foot widths, and using yarn ranging from Halcyon
2/12 silk to KnitPicks fingering weight wool and cotton. Handouts will provide a list of necessary measurements and the steps needed to calculate a custom pattern to ensure the right fit. |

Runic Ciphers
On a mist-laden morning in Östergötland, around 800CE, a stone was raised. A monument was finished to make memories last for another hundred generations and more. Within this text, however, there are unusual symbols and what seems to be hidden messages... and the runestone at Rök is just one example. Period Ballads: What they are and how to create them
Writing a period, authentic-sounding ballad is harder than it seems at first glance. The concept of a 'ballad' is fuzzy to many people; in the SCA we sing scottish border ballads, broadside ballads, other traditional english folk songs, and some post-period songs side by side.
This class will explain the difference between these types of songs, discuss the structure and features found in border ballads, and provide some pointers on pitfalls to avoid when writing an 'authentic' sounding ballad.
No musical or bardic experience required. |

No not that Viking (making Norse kit that is more specific)
Would you like to put together a Viking Age Norse kit that better reflects a more specific time and or place? The goals of this class include; to survey the major Viking Age art styles and to correlate the time periods of those styles with some important historical events; looking at some of the major styles of paired domed oval brooches, and related feminine jewelry, including when and where they were most prevalent; and considering some possibilities for garments or items distinctive to different regions you may want to incorporate into your garb. We’ll also look at some common pitfalls if you want to keep your Viking Age Norse kit as evidence-based as practical. |

Rise of the RoxStars: A Case Study in Recruiting & Retention
The Shire of Roxbury Mill has grown from 5 to 65 active members playing with the group in 3 years -- from a non-entity to a well-known regional influence. In this course, the Seneschal and a Deputy Seneschal of The Shire of Roxbury Mill will explain their methods for recruitment and retention that led to this growth, and use the lens of social gaming theory to help you avoid some of the most common pitfalls that local groups fall into that either dissuade new membership, or that discourage play with the local group. |
