Unless the Enemy has Studied his Agrippa
Camillo Agrippa's fencing manual, published in 1553, is the first manual to recommend a style of swordplay focused on the thrust. This transitional style, which gave birth to the later Spanish and Italian schools, offers a fascinating look at the history of fencing - and it's practical, too! We will discuss the basic elements of Agrippa's system, how to incorporate some of his ideas into your fight, and what mistakes to avoid if you decide to take the plunge and study Agrippa in more detail. Full-contact slow work will be included. |

The End of Poetry: The Rise of the Fechtbuch in Historical Context
The appearance of the fechtbucher around 1300 heralded a sea change in medieval pedagogy that reverberated through the Renaissance and continues to have massive implications on how modern people think of the process of learning. By examining medieval documents on the subjects of rhetoric, pedagogy, and epistemology, we can see pedagogical trends developing and others disappearing in the evolution of the fechtbuch. |

A Pan-European Martial Art: Evidence of Continuum in the Medieval Fechtbucher
The first fechtbuch, now known as Royal Armouries I.33, appeared ~1300, after which the medium exploded onto the medieval scene, with such a profusion of authors and titles throughout the fifteenth century and later that any complete survey would constitute an extraordinary collaborative, academic feat. However, within these manuscripts are threads of evidence pointing to a continuity of theory that spreads from Poland to England and from Spain to Italy. Although to some extent, there is evidence to support a north-south division in theoretical stance, it is equally possible to describe this split as temporal, as much as spatial, and say that the split is between a High Medieval art and a Renaissance art. This class will attempt to follow these threads and examine the case for what Heslop and Bradak (in Lessons on the English Longsword) call a pan-European martial art. |

What the Tross really wore
What did the Tross, the Landsknecht's campfollowers really wear? We'll examine over 60 different period depictions of women in the Tross, historical clues of what their lives were really like on the march and the difference between the common recreation and the period depictions. If there's time, we'll cover the wulsthaube and steuchlein. The class is open to all but only 15 handouts are available. |

Domingo Luis Godinho's Single Sword from 'Arte de Esgrima' (1599)
We will go over some of the chief points laid out in
Domingo Luis Godinho's manual of 1599, ""Arte de Esgrima"". This appears to be the only complete extant manuscript on Iberian swordsmanship that is not based on 'la verdadera destreza', written between Carranza's and Pacheo's own publications. In it, we will deal with some of the principles that Godinho lays out, from his simple rules to some of the ""plays"" described in his later chapters.
Students will leave with both solo and two person drills as well as Godinho's rules for how to begin and end a bout. |

Enameled Jewelry & Accessories
We cannot talk about costuming without talking about jewelry and accessories. And we cannot talk about jewelry and accessories without exploring the art of enameling. Enameled pieces existed in every period we explore in the SCA. We will look at examples we do have, and I’ll have some pieces to pass around. If you missed the “hands-on” class, a short discussion about getting started in enameling will also be included if time permits. |
