This is a course for the pure novice heavy fighter up to the skilled veteran of the craft to discuss how Atlantia fights together at war. There will be a discussion and introduction on the basic commands and theories behind the principles of how we fight in a shield wall.

This class is for those wishing to become a Target Archery Marshal or needing to renew their class to keep their status as a target archery marshal. The student will have knowledge of range safety and of target archery, understand the SCA rules that pertain to target archery, be able to conduct an equipment inspection, and be able to run a line for target archery.

Its History and How it Can Be Applies in the Current Middle Ages This class will give an overview of the theater from the time of Aethelwold, Bishop of Winchester, in the tenth century through the reign of Henry VIII in the sixteenth century. Time will be left at the end of the period for a discussion on how theater may enliven the populace of Nottinghill Coill.

Many events have a feast in the evening. This is a grand meal - in fact, often several meals served one after another - with multiple courses. The epitome of a modern SCA feast is a collection of heavily researched medieval dishes, prepared by a large volunteer cooking staff, served in several courses, to a multitude of diners. This is a class for the first time feast cooks and will include tips learned over the past 10 years of feasts in the SCA.

Blackwork, sometimes historically termed Spanish blackwork, is a form of embroidery generally using a black thread, although other colors were also used on occasion. This is a basic starter class in blackwork. It includes a short history, demonstration of stitches used, and hands on project to take home, as well as a flyer.

So you've been traveling about the Known World and there are so many people of various ranks, ceremonies occurring at almost every event, and the Courts are wondrous. How to interact and address people of various ranks, how to understand what is happening at certain ceremonies, and how to act during Court both in the populace and before the Thrones are just some of the things that are going to be covered in the class. I look forward to seeing you! This class is recommended for people who have been participating 3 or fewer years.

Kumihimo is a Japanese form of braid-making. Cords and ribbons are made by interlacing strands. Kumi himo is Japanese for "gathered threads". Move beyond the standard round braid and learn how to do a plaid braid on a modern foam disk. The $8 fee includes a new square foam disk, all the yarn and securing ties, instructions, binder clip, and counterweight.

Come and learn the secrets behind the best job in the SCA: the Court Herald! Learn what it takes to prepare for court, conduct court for the Royals, and the follow up. It's not all just standing up front and being loud, its lots of preparation and follow up. Being a court herald means you get a front row seat as people get the recognition and accolades that they deserve. Remember, Royalty exists so that Heralds can have court!

One of the most important skills throughout the timeframe that we recreate, archery was used for hunting, practice, and especially war. Archery played an important role in many a battle and many cultures depended upon their innovative and skilled archers for defense as well as a means of conquest. This class will show you how to repair or replace missing tips, fletching, and nocks for your target arrows.

Have you always been intrigued by naalbinding, but never had a chance to sit down and give it a go? Tried to teach yourself but got confused by all of the O/U/OO/UU/OOOOOO/UUUUU notations? Naalbinding is a fabric creation technique predating both knitting and crochet. Come play in this hands on class and learn the basics of naalbinding - how to start both a new row and a round, as well as the most basic stitch: Oslo Stitch. Classes are small to help make certain that everyone has a chance to get any knots worked out.

Le Vivendier is one of the earliest and best-known recipe collections of the Middle Ages, along with the Latin Liber de Coquina (early 14th century) ad the English Forme of Cury (c. 1390). WE will discuss the techniques used to make some sauces from the work, including making one sauce, and tasting at least two others.

The SCA allows you to serve the event in balance with your own dreams of performing to adoring crowds. Learn the balance between being a spotlight hog and waiting to be invited to perform; learn to work with event staff, Royalty, and Baronage to schedule when and where your performance will enhance the event. You may be brilliant, but don't risk grandstanding even by mistake. We will cover how to increase the activity in performing arts in your home town by serving the community.

This will be a hands-on class in German Longsword fighting as it applies to SCA Combat, focusing on Cut and Thrust martial activities. While a limited amount of loaner gear will be available, students are encouraged to bring their own basic rapier gear if they have it. Students will pair up and practice forms and defenses, but there will be no full speed combat with live steel.

The history of chess spans over 1500 years. This course will indeed be very basic. Identifying the pieces, movement rules, how to capture pieces, how to win or draw a game. Common practices like the touch rule and how to choose the starting player as well as a very brief history of chess and how the game changed over time will be covered as well.

Spindles come in many different sizes and weights depending on the thickness of the yarn one desires to spin. This is an introductory class for those who wish to learn the art of spinning yarn from prepared fiber. Students will be given an overview of various fibers, the best methods for spinning them into usable yarns, and instructions on finishing methods. Each student will be given a drop-spindle and fiber of their own to work with, and take home and play with later.

SCA Court Protocol and Precedence Heralds are the keepers of the protocol and, in this class, Triton Herald will lead a discussion on setting up court and maintaining the proper Order of Precedence. A guide to determining who sits where in court, a useful tool for heralds and retainers! The class promises hands on application of real situations.

Seneschal 101 and 201 are required for being a warranted seneschal or deputy seneschal. Lady Murienne will be providing this class to individuals who need the class for warranting purposes.

A dyeing workshop hosted outside. Colors will include yellow, red, blue, green (if time allows for overdyeing), and unknown color. All colors will be from natural period dyes. Please bring wool you;d like to dye (or silk or other fiber), scoured is preferred. Class will be into two split sessions with an hour break for lunch. Session one will be dye fiber prep, to include scouring and pre-mordanting. Session two will be dyeing of fibers.

A great work of art is nothing with out proper documentation. In this class you will learn how to document your work for SCA purposes. Learn where to find sources and how to put it all on paper. Likewise, art cannot be truly appreciated without proper presentation. In this class you will learn how to present your art so that it will forever last in the memory of all those that lay their eyes upon it.

Ever wonder how modern musical notation came to be? What are those weird shaped things in medieval song books? how did music go from a predominately oral/aural tradition to one that has its own written language? This class will answer how musical notation evolved into what we know today, as well as musical traditions of various cultures throughout our period. No prior musical experience is required!

This class is designed for the individuals who want to volunteer their time to help preparing feasts, but aren't exactly familiar with how things work in a kitchen that isn't their own. Topics covered will be sanitation, cross contamination, common food allergies and intolerances, and more. The prospective student is the home cook with little or no restaurant experience.

This class will teach you how to put together your basic rattan sword with thrusting tip. While there is no definitive was, this is a tried-and-true method. No materials needed, but, if you want to follow along while putting together one of your own, email the instructor to get a list of suggested materials.

Confectionery is the art of making confections, which are food items that are rish in sugar and carbohydrates. Exact definitions are difficult. In general though, confectionery is divided into two broad and somewhat overlapping categories, bakers' confections and sugar confections. We will focus on medieval confectionery in particular. We will make marzipan and learn the recipes for other sweets.

In this class you will learn how to make a simple pair of straight knitting needles and then we will go over the basics of knitting. We begin with types of yarn, what information is on the label of the yarn, and then the cast on, knit stitch, and bind off. In other words, we will answer the questions: how to get the yarn on the needles, knit and how to get the project off the needles.

This class is good for all fighting disciplines. Want to improve you fighting kit, but don't know where to start for creating a DIY soft kit? This class will go over different techniques for quilting fabric, the materials to use, and where to buy, and a short overview to patterning. This is a lecture with a minor hands-on approach. You will leave with a basic understanding to take home and explore more thoroughly.

Writing for your local of Kingdom newsletter can be a great way to express yourself and share knowledge. It's also a lot easier to do than most gentles think. This course will cover the basics of non-academic writing styles, content, concerns, and the benefits of this glamorous and exciting endeavor. We will further cover art and photo contributions. We will also discuss editing and submitting your work. Handouts will include "100 ideas for contributions to SCA newsletters."

How do you give someone valuable feedback on their A&S entry in such a way to encourage and support? What if you don't really know much (or anything) about that art of science? We'll discuss the different forms and tools available for judging A&S, as well as some tried and true methods developed by art teachers to keep your comments constructive without causing any emotional trauma to the artist.

Commedia dell' Arte is a method of producing a play that was very popular in 16th Century Italian society at all levels. This art form was characterized by masked "types" which began in Italy in the 16th century and was responsible for the advent of the actresses and improvised performances based on sketches or scenarios. It was improvised instead of scripted, full of stereotypical characters, and high energy humor! Come learn the basics about it and how you can start commedia in your own home town.

Mead is an alcoholic beverage created by fermenting honey with water, sometimes with various fruits, spices, grains, or hops. We shall all enjoy the drink of gods and heroes. I willl discuss the very basics to making your very own first batch of mead. I will also include a basic mead recipe and discuss some options for brewing. Note: dry site, no alcohol present.

Trichinopoly was used by Anglo-Saxon Norse mainly during the 8th century through 10th century, found in many graves and treasure hoards, for many uses: necklaces, chains for decoration, bracelets, edging for clothing as well as trim. This particular style is not as common as the twisted wire torques that are more often though of today in regards to Viking or Norse jewelry. This class will cover the basics of Viking wire-weaving, and all supplies are provided.

In this class students will get a basic introduction to a common staple in every household. While period authenticity for this treat is questionable due to a lack of written records from the Viking age, a common recipe has been passed down through the ages and will be the focus of the class. Whether you want to create functional munition grade armor or if you want to create functional works of art, everyone starts by taking that first step. We all know that sometimes the toughest thinks is taking that first step so this class is intended to help you set up your shop. In this class I will let you know what you need to get started, what I learned about the shop by trial and error and I'll provide you with the online resources I turn to when working on a project.

Wow! Everyone's Feast Gear is so pretty and you have paper plates, Dixie cups, and plastic ware to eat with. You'd get better, but it's out of your budget to get the fancy stuff, right? Nope! There is hope for the beginner feaster! It is possible to get a set of feast gear for less than $10, let me show you how! Learn some of the feasting traditions for this kingdom and a few things from other kingdoms as well.

So, the event is next week and Mistress Singer and Master Serger are indisposed. How are you going to get that garb made now? After this class, that will no longer be a problem. Learn the basic stitches and techniques for seaming, hemming, finishing, and decorating your garb with nothing but a needle, thread, and scissors.

So many awards, so much confusion... What are the differences between the different level awards? How do Baronial level awards interact with Kingdom level awards? Who can write award recommendations? These questions and more will be answered in this exciting, action packed class! I look forward to seeing you! Roses are best known as ornamental plants grown for their flowers in the garden and sometimes indoors. They have been also used for commercial perfumery and commercial cut flower crops. Some are used as landscape plants, for hedging and for other utilitarian purposes, such as game cover and slope stabilization. They also have minor medicinal uses. This class will provide a survey of roses that were available and/or cultivated during the SCA period and how they compare to roses commonly grown today.

Leather Working 101 is an introduction to different types of tools and products currently available to artisans. We will discuss the fundamentals of leatherwork to build a foundation that rings true for any kind of leather work. This class is intended as a hands on approach to learning. Beginner tool kits can be purchased for students given advance notice.

With an array of fillings and different options for crusts, savory pies are exquisite as a main course, or served with several other dishes on a spread for entertaining. This will be a hands-on class where we will discuss savory pies from the Middle Ages. We will also be preparing two different pies as a group and sampling the results!

This class is an introduction to learning how to knit using two or more colors of yarn in the same project. Students will learn how to manage more than one color at a time to avoid tangles, as well as how to read and create their own colorwork knitting charts. Students will be expected to have a grasp of common knitting terms, as well as know how to cast on, knit in the round, and bind off. Please bring either a set of double pointed needles of a 16" circular needle in a size you are comfortable with and yarn that is appropriate. If you cannot bring these items, let the teacher know in advance to work something out.

Improvisational comedy is a popular entertainment style, it is key in producing commedia dell' arte, but it also helps people live in persona at SCA events, speak confidently in front of others, and create beautiful moments in court. This class will teach some of the foundational concepts of improvisation, and we will have a ton of fun playing improvisational games to practice and build these skills.

In addition to basic forms of personal jewelry such as rings, necklaces, bracelets, and brooches that remain in use today, medieval jewelry often includes a range of other forms less often found in modern jewelry, including intricate wire work. This class will provide a quick history of wire jewelry and hands-on projects including one bracelet and an Anglo-Saxon ring.

When cooking in the SCA we are sometimes challenged with mysteries when we research- Sometimes a recipe isn't written in a manner familiar to modern eyes. In this class we'll learn some ways to translate these recipes into more modern terms. Let's uncover the mystery together!

Tunics worn during the Early Middle Ages often featured decorative embroidery or tablet-woven braids along the neck, hem, and wrists. This was the case, for instance, with tunics worn by both rich and poor Anglo-Saxons before the Norman Conquest. T0tunics can be anything from very simple to excessively elaborate. Part of making these differences lies in the sleeve and neckline design. This class will detail several sleeve and neckline variations and how they are used to move from simple to elaborate T-tunics.

This class will cover the basics on how to be a Minister of Arts and Sciences. It is a wonderful job. Enjoy it! The more active you are within your local group, the more successful you will be and the more enjoyment you will find. The more you get to kjnow your group, the more you will find individuals willing to assist you and put forth ideas of their own.

Nottinghill Coill is the fourth Barony of Atlantia and the first in the state of South Carolina. This class will cover the history of Nottinghill Coill from its inception in AS IX (1974) through AS XIX (1984): What the first ten years were like. This will cover the inception, formation into a Shire, and then its promotion to the level of Barony.

Leather Working 201 builds upon fundamentals with a focus on the process behind tooling your designs into veg tanned leather in order to enhance impressions and develop clean lines. This class is intended as a hands on approach to learning, and kits can be purchased if instructor notified in advance.

Sanitation is an important part of any kitchen, but when you are cooking for an entire event of people, it becomes even more crucial. This class will give hints and ideas on ways to keep the SCA kitchen safe and how to avoid sanitation issues within the kitchen.
