Tips and Resources for Starting to Learn Latin on Your Own
Whatever your interest in Latin, the fact that it's just not spoken anymore makes it more difficult to pick up. Add to that the grammatical complexity of an ancient language that wasn't worn smooth yet by external pressures, and making real progress requires dedication. But, your interest may not be strong enough to justify taking a course or lessons. If you want to learn Latin on your own, how can you avoid picking the wrong book, wasting time, and getting frustrated?
This class will not teach Latin; the instructor (Giovanna Marin of Ponte Alto) will give an overview of her findings and recommendations on the available materials and resources for self-learners. Taking into account learning styles, language experience, and goals, she can offer ideas on how to memorize and practice grammatical features and vocabulary. She started studying Latin on her own in Fall 2020. She has earned a Master's Degree in Arabic Language, Literature, and Linguistics, and has studied German, French, Spanish, Kazakh, Telugu, Welsh, and Urdu.

Modern Alchemy 201: Saponification
NB: The numbering is purely to keep topics separate, you do not need to have been at Alchemy 101.
This is a theory conversation class about the chemical processes happening in soap making. Why does it work? What’s really going on in there? This will focus more upon a modern understanding of the process involved rather than the medieval perspective. A very basic knowledge of soap making will be assumed, but the curious are welcome. |

History and How-to of Venetian Carnevale Masks
This class explores the history of the Venetian Carnivale mask beginning with its earliest mention in the 13th century up through modern times. Though much of the history has been lost to the ages for various reasons, researchers have been able to gather information from remaining sources such as legal documents and personal dowries. We will also discuss the most common types of masks worn in period, their most frequent uses, and look at images of those mask.
The second portion of the class will be a display/discussion of how and why I became interested in this topic, my early attempts at making masks, and the evolution of my mask-making trials using techniques similar to those I believe were used in period. Time and space (mostly space) allowing I will attempt a live demonstration of the various steps to mask-making as I am currently doing it.
This class will not be recorded though there are various versions recorded out there available if you search for them.

Adding Humor in Bardic
We live in a world today that is fraught with difficult situations and crises - not a lot different from the medieval period in some ways where there was constant battle for either survival or in a constant state of attempting to defend in battle or maintain peace. So did medieval folks have a sense of humor? During this class we’ll have a brief discussion of humor in the medieval world for context, but this is mostly a practical class about adding humor into your bardic pieces and performances in a variety of ways. |

SCA Geography
You have heard that the SCA is in Antarctica, but what kingdom is that? Just where are the Estrella War, the Barony of Southron Gaard, or Kingdom of Ealdormere on a map? If an event is in the Canton of Aire Faucon, how far is the drive? This class will answer those questions and more! Starting at the map of the world, we will look at where the different kingdoms are then zoomed in on North America, the east coast, and finally Atlantia itself, locating the different branches around the country, and around the kingdom, on a modern map.
