Join Magistra Beatriz and Dame Emma for a demo and discussion of troubleshooting garment fit. We will show you some common fitting issue, how to diagnose for problems by wrinkles, and how to fix them. Students are welcome to bring a garment that has been giving them trouble, and we'll work through the issues with them.

Field Marshal 201 is a primer on how to be the marshal-in-charge of an event. It assumes that the individuals taking the class are (or will become) well-grounded in their own disciplines. This is a mandatory class that must be taken at least once for anyone wishing to obtain a marshal warrant within Atlantia, along with any discipline specific required classes. NOTE: Current marshals are not required to retake this course. Class is not recorded

This is a hands-on class to learn to make cording using a finger loop braiding technique. Students will make a piece of braid, which they may take with them. All materials will be provided. Class may be recorded, but this is a craft best learned in person.

This class will cover using the Meyer's Square as a training tool for drills and pellwork. This class will be taught from the perspective and principles of Joachim Meyer's 1570 fencing system, but has cross applicability for a wide variety of systems and weapons styles. I will have some loaner weapons available but bringing your own is appreciated if possible. This class will introduce participants to the requirements and needed skills for judging bouts in Rebated Steel. There will be hands 'off' demonstrations from the fighters to allow the participants to practice their skills.

We all need feedback to help us to grow in our artistic endeavors. Activities such as Arts & Sciences competitions can provide an opportunity to receive such feedback. Make no mistake though – providing good feedback requires thought and effort – not just writing down the first thing that comes into your head. Providing bad feedback, on the other hand, is easy; it only takes a moment of carelessness, or inattention, or failure to consider the effect of your words on the recipient, to make a lasting, and negative impact. In this class, we will talk about things to look for in giving feedback, and at ways to present your observations and suggestions so they will be seen as opportunities for improvement, and not just as harsh criticism. The instructor is currently the Kingdom Deputy MoAS for Competitions. This class will not be recorded.

A love of dance for fun and as a social grace begins at an early age and continues for life. This class will teach children of all ages (including adults) a few basic dances common in the SCA, and a little bit of social grace as well. Parents of younger children are asked to stay and assist their children. No partner needed, no experience needed, just a desire to have fun and learn something new. All steps will be taught.

Required class for entering the target archery Marshal-in-Training program, and for target archery marshals renewing their warrants. Covers Society and Kingdom target archery safety rules and range procedures, basics of equipment safety inspections, requirements for earning a target archery marshal warrant, etc. PARTICIPANTS MUST BRING THEIR BLUE CARDS, OR HAVE THEIR MEMBERSHIP NUMBER AND EXPIRATION DATE READILY AVAILABLE. Class will not be recorded. The instructor is hard of hearing so we will have clear view masks available for students who have questions to enable lip reading.

Are you interested in learning basic (single) wire weaving? This class is designed for students who are interested in making chain without the use of expensive tools or heat. The technique I teach has been used by the "Vikings" and many other cultures. We will also discuss common problems and how to fix them. If you need glasses for close up work, bring them.

Orientation and fundamentals class needed to get or maintain warrant as a Seneschal in Atlantia. One of the two classes required for warranting. This class will not be recorded

Do you want to serve your kingdom by supporting rapier combat? Are you a rapier marshal that wants to avoid warning emails that your warrant is about to expire? Do you just like the sound of my voice and want to listen to me talk? Then this is the class for you! Taking Rapier Marshal 101 is the first step towards becoming a warranted rapier marshal.

Want to learn how our ancestors defended themselves and their homes from misfortune, illness, and evil? This class will focus on some of the ways that symbols were used then (from ancient Egypt through late SCA period), and still are today. Please, adults only, some of the symbols are not child appropriate. **This class will not be recorded.**

This class will cover the basics of Italian master Fiore’s longsword techniques with some sample plays from the longsword, sword in one hand, and sword in armor sections of his 1409 manual. Focus will be on plays that are legal for SCA rulesets. Plays will be demonstrated and students will get to try them in a slow, non-sparring, way. No armor is required. Students may bring a longsword simulator if they wish. Extra simulators will be available for use during the class.

Their is no prerequisite for being an authorized marshal in any other discipline to take the class.

A survey of the history of roses from ancient times through the present, a discussion of which varieties of roses were grown in period and how modern roses differ from period roses.

Conducting ethical research and documentation for the arts and sciences in the SCA need not be difficult. This class will walk attendees through research methods, style guides, and producing documentation with a focus on ethical sourcing. After completing the class, students should have a grasp of how to research projects on their own and create comprehensive documentation for education and competition.

Post pandemic I thought to reintroduce old favorites rather than try more complicated dances from the Gresley collection. We will do Armynn, Grene Gynger, New Yer, Rawty, and Whatsoever ye will. these are my personal favorites. If there is time I will have worked up several more and the class can decide to repeat or go on.

A target archery loaner kit is one of the most valuable recruiting tools a local group can have. The class will discuss selecting bows currently on the market, as well as arrows and tackle. A model kit for a small group's needs will be on display. Naturally, a handout will be provided. The class will not be recorded.

We'll look at what comprised the typical medieval kitchen garden, in contrast to the manor and monastic gardens, how plants were used, and how vital these gardens were for everyday life. We'll also discuss what plants are still used today.

Come join us to discuss the newly recognized Royal Academie d'Espee, Atlantia's Rapier guild. The discussion will be centered around the formation and election of members to the Academie Executive Council, the newly ratified Academie Bylaws, and the next steps for the Executive Council.

This class will cover the basic guards, concepts, cuts and thrusts from the rapier section of Joachim Meyer's 1570 fencing manual. Students should bring a rapier, although loaner swords may be available on a limited basis.

This is a writing workshop where we will be working on writing collaborative poetry forms as a group. Beginner friendly, no experience required! We will start with a simple "community poem" game, then work on a renga, a long collaborative poem composed of haiku as stanzas. If time and interest permits, will also try other historical collaborative or conversational poetry forms, such as flyting, zajal, or Wheel River style quatrains. Not requiring masks as a baseline but will require masks upon request of any student in order to accommodate them. Workshop will not be recorded.

Do you love Viking wire weaving but want to learn more? Come and learn double, triple weave and some fun stuff like spirals. This will be hands-on class, teaching different weaving techniques. Students must know how to do single Viking wire weaving. In addition if you are having trouble with Viking wire weaving, bring your piece and I will try to help you. Are you doing something interesting? Bring it by. I would love to see it.

Learn several easy French circle dances that are popular in Atlantia (Horses Branle, Montarde Branle, Official Branle, Washerwomen's Branle) and one beloved SCA choreography (Turkish / Maltese Branle). The class will also introduce other dance forms found in Arbeau's 1589 dance manual.

I will teach you how to make period pieces so that you can introduce your garb. Any level is welcome! Come learn about the history and...somewhat muddled...origins of German Brick Stitch! This will be a survey of Brick Stitch; both as a stand alone stitch and the well known style German Brick Stitch. Class handout fee is $1

This class will go over the basics of how to grow medieval vegetables including garden preparation, medieval vs. modern varieties, seed and plant sources, and basic storage/preservation options.

Class will focus on areas for improvement both physical and mental aspects of target archery structured around the specific needs of those attending.

People participate in Arts & Sciences Competitions for many different reasons – and some people choose not to participate in them at all, also for many different reasons. This class will be a round table discussion of why people enter A&S competitions, and what benefit they hope to get from doing so. We’ll also talk about what you think could be done better in competitions to help people meet those goals – by those running and judging the competitions, and, yes, by those who are entering them as well. The instructor is currently the Kingdom Deputy MoAS for Competitions. This class will not be recorded.

Increase your post-feast dancing ability with 3 easy Italian dances that are common in Atlantia. No partner needed, no experience needed, just a desire to have fun and learn something new. Dances will be Amoroso, Petit Vriens, and Petit Rose.

We are the record keepers for our Baronies. It is our job and responsibility to provide the information that our historians and archivists save for future SCAdians so they may look back and see where our Society came from and how it has changed. Want to learn all about the cool things we do and how we you can do it too? This class will also come in handy if you want to be a deputy and help out too!! **masking will only be required depending on the size of the space and number of folks in attendance so please be prepared to mask if asked too.

Class will cover the rudiments of teaching archery with special emphasis on teaching physical skills.

Irish small farm settlements in the Early Medieval Period managed to feed, clothe and shelter themselves with shocking self-sufficiency. What did they plant, what did they raise, and how did they manage their landscape? Learn about life in the rural countryside of Ireland ca. 700CE. Not recorded.

The orders of knighthood founded by sovereign rulers in Europe were a phenomenon of the later Middle Ages. Their foundation was an exercise of princely power, display of royal wealth, and effort to build power through building ties of loyalty to the ruler. We'll look at the rise of the knightly class in Europe in the early Middle Ages, why the new princely orders evolved, and what worked to achieve the ruler's aims.

A comparative tasting class on the difference between types of pork and spice, and how this relates to the taste of final redactions of recipes. Referencing Libro di cucina / Libro per cuoco by Anonimo veneziano, “A Smoked Yellow Sausage”, the class will taste and compare flavor profiles of commercially raised, farm raised and heritage pork, with black and red peppercorns. Students will discuss • How flavor profile, texture, color differences of commercially raised, farm raised and heritage pork. • How the effects of diet determine the flavor of pork. • How the flavor profile differs when using black peppercorns verses red peppercorns. • Why correct historical redaction of recipes is important, and what effect it has on flavor/texture profiles as related to this recipe. Students will be tasting different sausage flights. Pork, saffron ,fennel ,black peppercorns, red peppercorns, and asiago cheese are the ingredients used. Please be aware if you have any allergies related to any of the above ingredients.

The hey can be one of the most challenging English country dancing figures for beginners (and for some expert dancers, too!) Take partners and form a longways set for skill improvement as we explore the many varieties of the hey and work through the Playford dance "Grimstock" together.

Try your hand at German Brick Stitch. Students will leave with the beginning of a small medallion from an extent example. Good for a bookmark or cup cover. Bring a small to medium sized hoop, tapestry needle, ground cloth of your choice (28ct or 32ct cotton recommended for beginners. Aida is not recommended, linen for those comfortable with it), and embroidery floss in 3 colors. Handout fee is $2 Kits are available for $5.00; only 5 kits available.

This class will cover the guards, master cuts, secondary cuts, and drills from Meyer's section on dussack from his 16th century fencing manual. Students should bring a dussack or short sword. Gloves and a mask are recommended, but not required.

This is the basic marshaling class needed for anyone interested in becoming a Thrown Weapons marshal in Atlantia. It will cover rules, requirements, inspection concerns (partly hands on), and everything that a prospective marshal should know. It also counts as a refresher for current marshals needing to maintain their warrants.

Back then people made fantastic ornaments and applications using beads and pearls, and most important stones, on their clothes, shoes, and hats. I will show you the method, which will help you to make the replicas of your garb. Also, you will be able to make the jewelry and medallions for recreation. At the end of this class, you will have a byzantine ring replica and skills that will help you to improve your art! Every level is welcome! Food production in the mid-Atlantic has a long and fascinating history! With a diverse mix of perennial and annual plants, the native tribes were able to harvest nutritionally rich staple foods almost year-round. Learn about some of the most important domesticated and wild food crops, and the cultivation practices of the Late Woodland Period. Not recorded.

About a 10-minute drive from the site, in downtown Lynchburg, is the Old City Cemetery. It has an extensive rose garden which should be in full bloom in early June. Meet me by the Cemetery Center/Museum at 6:10PM and I will do a guided tour through the cemetery, pointing out the period roses they have in the garden.
