Ports and Poisons of Medieval Africa
In this class we will explore 12 or so major cities of ancient and medieval Africa as well as poisonous substances that relate to the histories of those cities in some way. The student will learn about persons of note who perished by poison, poison arrows and their effects, trade routes, and African cultures. The Journey of Hanno, Travels of Ibn Battuta, Leo Africanus, and other period sources will be used, though it will not be strictly an ancient times class. We will move from Alexandria around the coast clockwise, finishing in Tunis. Other topics that relate such as the Bantu people's migration, medieval Omani culture, the refining of gold using mercury, Islamic views of poison, and saltpeter's functions in alchemy will be mentioned as they relate to the other material. |

Building Scrolls
You won't find a 100% perfect baronial service scroll in a 14th century manuscript. Moreover, not all places and times had the sort of manuscript culture that easily lends itself to an SCA scroll. _Every single exemplar_ requires some adjustment. • In this talk I will describe ways in which example pages can be used to construct a scroll, suggest methods for using period pieces to create nontraditional scrolls, and explore a few approaches for levelling up your scroll-building by using more than a single exemplar in a considered, educated, historically-informed way. By the end, I hope you'll come away with new confidence and inspiration, as we demystify the process of building scrolls. [This class will not be recorded.] |

If you have a ukulele and want to play SCA music on it, this class will help you get started! After giving a brief history of the gittern, Renaissance Guitar, Madeiran rajao, and Hawaiian ukulele, the instructor will show the class some basic chords and strums, and introduce at least three songs: one Medieval, one Renaissance, and one "Filk". Students can tune their ukuleles, and strum and sing along remotely. Song sheets and chord diagrams will be available via link. This class will not be recorded. Many people don't realize that the ukulele has roots in Medieval and Renaissance Europe - it is an appropriate instrument for accompanying SCA song. No prior experience performing music or playing a stringed instrument is required: beginners are welcome! |

Magical Beliefs and Amulets for Your Early English (Anglo-Saxon) Persona

The Early English did not leave documentation about their own beliefs but we can use secondary sources to uncover some of their beliefs. Note: This class will be of interest to persons who wish to portray a female persona. From current research, it appears that men did not have as much to do with magic as women. |

Capable of Other Interpretation: English "Folk" Dances in Period
The "folk" or "traditional" dances of England--English country, morris and sword--are undoubtedly old. But how old are they, really? Where do they come from, and what was their context in period? If you're doing research on them, which resources are good and which aren't? Join us as we discuss the facts--and the fallacies--about these English dances, and explore what they were like in period. |
