We'll discuss the food preservation techniques used in the medieval period, how successful they were and what techniques we still use today. Samples of food preserved via these methods will be available! This class will be recorded.

In this class we will explore 12 or so major cities of ancient and medieval Africa as well as poisonous substances that relate to the histories of those cities in some way. The student will learn about persons of note who perished by poison, poison arrows and their effects, trade routes, and African cultures. The Journey of Hanno, Travels of Ibn Battuta, Leo Africanus, and other period sources will be used, though it will not be strictly an ancient times class. We will move from Alexandria around the coast clockwise, finishing in Tunis. Other topics that relate such as the Bantu people's migration, medieval Omani culture, the refining of gold using mercury, Islamic views of poison, and saltpeter's functions in alchemy will be mentioned as they relate to the other material.

Compiled in the late 13th Century by Alfonso X al Sabio “The Wise” of Castile and Leon, the Cantigas de Santa Maria is one of the largest extant collections of medieval poetry and music. This overview touches on the historical context, structure, language, and notation of this rich and widely popular collection of medieval music. This class will not be recorded.

Come and learn 15th century Italian dances Rostiboli Gioso and Amoroso. We will also learn some typical Italian movimenti (gestures) still used today for part four of Rostiboli Gioso so you won’t be limited to blowing kisses or flicking people off (though it is highly encouraged). This class is virtual so grab a person or ghost to dance with you and remember that dance is fun!

Class is required for warrant as Exchequer or Deputy Exchequer. This is a basic overview of the Exchequer job requirements. Class will NOT be recorded.

You won't find a 100% perfect baronial service scroll in a 14th century manuscript. Moreover, not all places and times had the sort of manuscript culture that easily lends itself to an SCA scroll. _Every single exemplar_ requires some adjustment. • In this talk I will describe ways in which example pages can be used to construct a scroll, suggest methods for using period pieces to create nontraditional scrolls, and explore a few approaches for levelling up your scroll-building by using more than a single exemplar in a considered, educated, historically-informed way. By the end, I hope you'll come away with new confidence and inspiration, as we demystify the process of building scrolls. [This class will not be recorded.]

We'll talk about what diversity, equity, and inclusion truly are, and then discuss the basics of privilege, unconscious bias, and microaggressions - all in the context of the SCA. There should be time for questions.

Learn how to draft a pattern for a pair of basic pants suitable for SCA wear. We’ll discuss how the basic pattern can be used as a stepping off point for more complicated pants. Participants will be provided a handout with digital sources and basic instructions. We will cover drafting a pattern from a pair of modern pants, drafting a pattern from measurements only and drafting a pattern for non-standard sizes. Participants will not need to have fabric to work along but it is encouraged.

While Chatelain 101 is the required class to become a warranted chatelain, anyone who is interested in working with newcomers is welcome! Learn the basics of the Chatelain office and how to most effectively recruit and retain members to the SCA. Everyone is a Chatelain! Class is not recorded.

This class will help you understand what you are looking at, as well as give you some understanding of what we can and cannot do with SCA money. AND it will help you help your Exchequer do their job. This is an introductory level class focused on plain-weave bands done on an inkle loom. We will discuss common terminology, the parts of the loom, how to warp the loom, read a pattern and make heddles. We will touch on the difference between plain weave and tablet weaving and briefly discuss warping tablets.
