So, You Want To Be A Herald!
Heraldry in the SCA covers a wide range of disciplines from name research to heraldic display to being the voice of the Crown. No one is expected to excel at all of them but they are all fun and they all go a long way in dressing up the game we all play.
Whether you want to dabble in one aspect or another or if you think you might want to be the herald for your branch but you're not sure, we'll talk about what is expected, what is required, and what resources are available to make it all manageable. No pressure on anyone. All are welcome. |

How to Train Novice Fencers
This course is for people who train new fencers at their practice.
Learn how to effectively teach critical skills for new fencers to learn both before they authorize and to focus on in their first year of fencing. We will focus on ways to make a novice combat ready so they are able to find success when they take the field, and give them a strong foundation for future growth.
Students will leave the class with a curriculum to use for novices and practical examples of how to teach it and assess learner progress.
Bring a sword for demonstrative purposes. |

Who's Line is it Anyway (Find the Line)
Gain the blade before you come in, Find the Line before the attach. We often use terminology without breaking down what actually mean. I we will discuss the 4 simple ways to find the line and make it yours! These are concepts from Fabris to create strong lines. This is a great class for those that are not certain what gaining or finding the blade may mean OR for instructors who are having trouble conveying the concept to a student. If you have a sword bring it, fencing masks/gorget are optional (all demos will be set up to do safely without masks or gorgets) |

Dance for Absolute, Complete Beginners
If you think dancing looks like fun, you're RIGHT! If you think it looks hard, you're wrong! All dances, from the most basic to the most advanced, share a common foundation, and we'll build that foundation. No experience, partner, or knowledge is needed. The desire to have fun is required. You'll walk out feeling ready to take any other dance classes you want, and knowing how to feel good and confident on the floor and asking someone to dance. And knowing, deep in your heart, that dance is FUN! |

How Do I Pronounce This?! - The International Phonetic Alphabet for SCAdians
How often do you encounter a name whose spelling defies the spelling system you grew up with? In the SCA, the answer is probably “a lot.” IPA provides a system of transcribing unfamiliar words using 1 symbol for each sound in a language. Its usefulness to heralds, especially in court, can be the difference between pronouncing someone’s name correctly and confidently or butchering it.
This class is most useful for heralds, but it is open to all.
I will provide hand-outs with information and exercises.

Medieval-inspired gear for backcountry camping
Recreational camping is fundamentally not appropriate for the time period covered by the SCA. Sleeping outside only became something some people in Western society did for fun in the late 19th century. That being said, it's a lot of fun to get out in the woods in garb with only what you can carry on your back, cook over a campfire, and sleep in wool blankets under the stars. Backcountry camping in the style of a previous time period has long been popular with those portraying 19th century Mountain men and 18th century longhunters, but those interested in earlier periods are beginning to give it a try, as well!
I will discuss ideas for putting together camping gear based on extant artifacts and medieval representations of hunters, pilgrims, and soldiers, and show some of the gear that I have used for medieval-inspired overnight backpacking trips. The focus will be on artifacts and artwork from Europe in the 10th - 15th centuries (I have a 14th century English persona), but some earlier and later pieces will likely be discussed, and the ideas for approaching a camping kit should be applicable to many different periods and cultures. |

Physical Conditioning to Prevent Combat Injuries
Injuries happen, especially in training or on the battlefield; that’s just a part of life. Still, wouldn’t it be nice if there was a way to reduce the frequency of such occurrences and speed up recovery time when they do happen? Such a boon actually is possible, and without the aid of magic or divine intervention no less! In this class we will go over methods and best practices to create or modify existing exercise routines with a mind towards making the body more resilient, not just stronger. While we will cover a wholistic approach and some background anatomy information, special attention will be given to resistance training, proper form of some of the most efficient exercises and stretches, and how to address common problem areas that are prone to injury in the human body or left relatively weak due to the realities of modern life. While this class is largely geared towards fighters who could use a refresher on how to take proper care in training and while exerting themselves on the field it would also be quite useful to anyone who is looking to begin a new exercise routine and does not know where to start.

Drafting a Kirtle Skirt from Alcega's Pattern Book
This hands-on class will start with a quick overview of women's fashion in the later 16c Spain, the defining characteristics of Spanish women's clothing and how some of those characteristics show up in the various vasquina (kirtle) patterns in Juan de Alcega's 'Libro de Geometria, Pratica, y Traca,' published in 1580 and 1589. The focus of this class will be demonstrating a skirt draft based on the ankle-length vasquina pattern (f.71v in 1580; f.60 in 1589), and briefly discussing how this technique could be modified for Alcega's other skirt patterns. My pattern draft utilizes generalized measurements for the waist and skirt length, so can be tailored for individual needs.
In-class patterns will be drafted at half-scale. Bring to class your measurements for waist and desired skirt length. |

Dietrich of Bern -- Legendary Germanic/Nordic hero
The British tell of King Arthur; the French celebrate Charlemagne; the Spaniards revere El Cid; but fewer know the sagas and tales of Dietrich of Bern, a sometime prince, and ally of the King of the Huns, and some equally heroic companions. He struggled with family members to keep his domain, and tangled with his neighbor, the Dwarf King (among others). I hope to whet your appetites with a few of the legends or sagas, and provide the sources (in English) I have located. It is also my intention to put Dietrich in context in time and place: discussing the historical figures that may have inspired the stories, the time period and places in middle Europe where he was said to live, and the peoples among whom these tales circulated. (This could also be useful as a preview of the theme of next Bright Hills Birthday in Feb. 2023 -- I'm organizing the quest.) |

Speculation and discourse abound regarding family planning in the medieval western world. Medieval Rocket Science
Once the Chinese invented gunpowder, the rocket wasn’t far behind. Its design evolved quickly, and it found uses both martial and celebratory, spreading from the East to Europe. We will look at how rockets developed, how they were built and used, and how they work. Did you ever wonder what the long stick on Wile E. Coyote’s ACME rocket was for, and why it looks remarkably like ones in period Chinese drawings? It’s only rocket science! Time, location, and weather permitting, we’ll launch a period-style rocket after the class.
Mundanely, the instructor has taught the basics of rocketry to all ages, and mentored a college rocket team in NASA competitions for many years. He loves building and flying large (10+ ft, 50+ lbs) amatuer rockets, and especially bringing the joy of rockets to others. |
