Voice Heraldry as Vocal Performance
Voice heralds need to fill many roles simultaneously: master of ceremonies, voice of the Crown, conveyor of information, and commanding the interest of those with small attention spans. Balancing it all can be difficult but it's certainly possible! We will review organizational and vocal techniques rooted in theater and bardic which can be used to ensure an engaging performance in any situation. While this talk will primarily focus on court heraldry, all vocal performers are welcome to attend. |

Building Scrolls
You won't find a 100% perfect baronial service scroll in a 14th century manuscript. Moreover, not all places and times had the sort of manuscript culture that easily lends itself to an SCA scroll. _Every single exemplar_ requires some adjustment. • In this talk I will describe ways in which example pages can be used to construct a scroll, suggest methods for using period pieces to create nontraditional scrolls, and explore a few approaches for levelling up your scroll-building by using more than a single exemplar in a considered, educated, historically-informed way. By the end, I hope you'll come away with new confidence and inspiration, as we demystify the process of building scrolls. [This class will not be recorded.] |

Iron Age Norwegian Bucket-shaped Pottery
This class looks at a distinctive type of pottery produced in western Norway from c.350 to c.550 CE. Unlike other contemporary pottery traditions that were coil-built or wheel-thrown, these bucket-shaped pots were slab-built using a cylindrical wooden mold. Many examples are beautifully decorated with stamped and combed designs. The good news is that if you have the tools and dexterity to roll out a pie crust, you can make one yourself with little or no prior ceramics experience. I will go over the history of this pottery type, show examples of different decorating styles, and then screen a demonstration video showing the process involved to make and decorate one using common household objects. Due to unforeseen circumstances, I will be travelling during the session and although I will be present, have prerecorded the slide lecture and the instructional components. Both videos will be available on YouTube after the class, but the live Q&A will not be recorded. |
