Traitor, Temptress, Mother: Interpretations of Dona Marina and the Fall of the Aztec Empire
Marina, also known as La Malinche, was an enslaved Nahua woman who served as interpreter and advisor to Hernan Cortes at the time of the Spanish Conquest of Central Mexico. She also gave birth to his son, Martin, one of the first Euro-indigenous mixed race people. Her short life has been the subject of constant and often conflicting reinterpretation, casting her as a traitor to her people, a victim of slavery, a sex-crazed temptress and as the mother to the Mestizos. In this class, we will evaluate what we actually know about the woman herself and her life before and after the arrival of Cortes. We will discuss the role of the Mestizo person in the post-conquest environment of Central Mexico and how modern historians place Dona Marina in the larger context of Mexican history, including nationalistic and feminist interpretations.
This class may not be appropriate for children. Potentially difficult topics discussed will include sexual assault, slavery, death of and violence against indigenous people, and descriptions of human sacrifice in a religious context. |

Trade Between Ethiopia and Yemen
Coffee, myrrh, ivory, and gold were traded between the two fascinating kingdoms of Ethiopia and Yemen. In medieval times Ethiopia was a lush, fertile location where a storyteller might travel from village to village. Yemen was full of fantastic architecture and trade. Both were really interesting places, but more importantly they knew how to cope with extreme heat, which is going to be a major focus of the class. So grab a coffee and let's set sail from AD 1000 to late 1500.
This class will offer advice about coffee in a period setting. We will also discuss coping with high temperatures, pirates, and the Queen of Sheba. It's a great class to help you justify that morning cuppa Joe and maybe spice up a tabletop role-playing game

Fire may no longer be the everyday necessity it once was, but studying and practicing period fire making methods can be an immersive (and fun!) way to learn more about those whose lives depended on it. In this class, I will discuss some documentable materials and techniques used in fire making prior to 1600 CE and demonstrate the initial steps of starting a fire with flint and steel (a fire making method appropriate for many personas).
This class will not be recorded, but a previously recorded session can be made available on request.

The Life of Peter Abelard: Sex, Violence, Philosophy!
Peter Abelard lived from c.1079-1142, and may rightly be called The Most Interesting Man of the 12th Century. He has been remembered by many for his scandalous love affair with Heloise d'Argenteuil, but he was also one of his generation's most preeminent philosophers and theologians. While having some fun with the, ahem, more salacious aspects of his life, this class will also look at why he is an important figure in the transition into the intellectual life of the High Middle Ages. For anyone building a persona around the scribal, literary, or scholarly arts, knowledge of Abelard and the circles in which he roamed and left his mark are essential. This class will be offered via Zoom and recorded for later viewing. |

High Medieval Magic 101: Natural versus Demonic magic
In the study of magical beliefs in period, there are several inherent concepts which developed through both common understanding and the theology of the era. Prominent theologians such as St. Augustine and Thomas Aquinas have effected centuries of discussion into the medieval era on the concept of magic and the invisible world. They make distinctions between Natural and Demonic magic; an area that often becomes grey. This class will explore these concepts and attempt to explain what the medieval thinking amongst mostly Western thoughts in the high medieval period was on those concepts. |

Justice by Blood and Iron - The History and Legal Process of Trial by Combat
For centuries various European societies resolved some of their greatest legal disputes through a procedure where two people tried to slaughter each other. This class aims to address a single question. Why? Why in the name of all that is just and at least slightly sensible would people, cultures, and entire kingdoms agree to this? In the process of answering this question we will look at the various techniques and legal practices that marked these trials, specific cases which were resolved by combat, and the lasting legacy of this practice on our own system of justice. |

Humans have been cultivating roses for more than 5,000 years. In the past, I have covered this material as part of my Roses 101: Roses Then and Now. Over the years the amount of material I wanted to cover has grown to the point where one hour is not enough time so I decided to split the class in two. This class is the history part while the other class "Roses Then and Now" covers the specific varieties that were know and grown in Europe during our period of study and how they differ from roses commonly available today. |

Everybody Hertz: Music For People Who Know Nothing About Music (But Want To!)
Do you enjoy jamming out to air guitar during an awesome guitar solo but have no idea which directions your fingers should go up or down the invisible fretbord? Did you ever feel guilty at singing the Sound of Music's "Do, a deer, a female deer" because you had no idea what it was about and felt like a fraud? Did you ever stop and wonder "just where does noise come from, anyway?" Do you really sort of want to pick up an instrument after years of elementary school recorder practice but at the same time don't want to relive the trauma of "Hot Crossed Buns" over and over again? Then this class may be for you!
Join us as we cover the basics of music starting from absolute zero, including topics like "why do we hear things? "What is a music note and why are there so many of them?" "I don't get the pun in your class title, can you explain?" and move onto more advanced (yet still utterly basic concepts) like scales, keys, and time signatures. If time allows, we will also touch on tips and tricks for picking up a musical instrument as an adult even if you have little to no musical experience.

Papercut Arts from Around the World
Since paper was invented in China (and, in some cases, even earlier than that), people have been cutting it to make art. From China to Germany, India to South/Central America, and plenty of places in between, papercut arts come in many forms all over the world and the timeline. Come learn one of the easiest and cheapest forms of A&S that you've probably been doing since you were a kid and didn't even know it (yes, paper snowflakes are in fact period!)
Class will not be recorded but slides can be provided to any provided email address (also available for those not in the class) |

Largesse 101: Demystifying the "W"s --and-- Largesse 102: Navigating the Do's and Don'ts
Let's face it... the SCA is full of the most generous people... we simply love to give gifts.
Come learn about general gifting (largesse) culture in the SCA, with the majority of the time being spent on tips for successful gifting of largesse of all kinds. If there is time, the floor will be opened for open discussion on kingdom differences and participants will be encouraged to show off their favourite largesse they have created or received.
This session will be presented by one of the founders of the Fellowship of the Things, a non-geographical (society wide) Fellowship devoted to enabling people to both make all the things, and give all the things. |

So You Have to Translate Sources: Tips and Tricks
Research can be all fun and games right up until you can't understand things. Pictures are excellent but written descriptions can really help flush out the whole kit and kaboodle.
I'll share some tips and tricks of the challenges of translating texts that are not in your preferred language. For example, Finnish to English, which has led to some huge hurdles.
Further revision forthcoming.

Writing Commedia Scenarios
The script for improvised commedia plays is called a "scenario" and tells a story with an outline of plot points broken up into scenes. Scenarios from SCA period, pre-1600CE, have a common style which we will share in this class. Shorter scenarios can be written for modern troupes that focus more on satisfying the actors and the audience rather than sticking to what happened 600+ years ago. Both styles of scenarios can be fun, and this class will show you how to create both. |

How to Get the Best Pictures: A Class for Autocrats, Vigil Organizers and Webministers
Every good photographer in the SCA knows that the shot never trumps the moment, that they shouldn't nudge, push or do anything to draw attention to themselves or disturb others to get the picture they have envisioned. At the same time, there is value in being able to capture those moments and getting the pictures where for a second, reality falls away and you really seem to capture the Modern Middle Ages in all it's beauty and emotion.
Getting good pictures of your apprenticing, household joining, belt-accepting, wedding, arts and science display, demo, performance or even your whole event is a gift you can give others. Like a site token that you get to take home, pictures can keep the memories alive, or for some who are overwhelmed in the moment, show them details they never saw. They're not just good publicity for website and facebook, some of them become a defining memory for members or a way to join in for those who were not at the event.
If you organize anything in the SCA photos will not, and should not be your first concern. Or your second. Or your third. But there ARE things you can do to make it easier for SCA photographers to be as inobtrusive as possible AND get the best shots.
This class is not just for autocrats but for SCA families with smaller or bigger ceremonies, people in charge of activities they like to see photographed, artists who want to get better pictures of their work, households, court heralds and more. If you have an interest in how 'what you do' gets photographed, I may have some tips! |
