With new English-language translations of archaeological reports and the many recent findings from the melting glaciers and ice fields, we know a lot more about early-period archery equipment now that was known just a decade or two ago. In this session I talk about these findings, show books in which they are documented, and share my experience recreating a reindeer-hunting arrow based on those found in Lendbreen and related ice field and glacial sites in Norway. A handout will be available but the class will not be recorded.

Learn the basic steps and patterns of English Country dance, so you'll be ready for your next ball! We'll teach some of the most popular SCA dances--for example, Sellenger's Round, Trenchmore, and Black Nag. We'll focus on the fun and dream with our feet. No experience necessary--just be ready to move.

A basic beginner class on how to get started brewing, more geared toward meads, but can be used across the board for all brewing practices. I will not be recording the class. If there is still time at the end, I may cover an attachment to this class called: Mead on a Budget.

Take Sophie's Six Rules-ahem-Guidelines of Improvisation normally taught in Theater classes and use them for bringing your persona to life in the SCA. How do you take an idea and transfer that onto a scroll? Bring your creativity and be ready to design a unique scroll

A survey of which varieties of roses were grown in period, what varieties have been developed since the 16th century, and how modern roses differ from period roses. This class is a revision of my "Roses Then and Now" I taught in the past; I have decided to split out the history of roses part and I am in the process of develop that as a separate class.

Tarboosh, fez, sugarloaf, pillbox--pattern and sew this simple, broadly used brimless hat to fit your head. Hat kits ($20, limit 10) include instruction sheets, aluminum foil, and painter's tape for patterning, two pieces of contrasting fabric, three needles, 12 straight pins, 2 small spool of thread, a pair of shears and a piece of soap or pencil stub for fabric marking. Exchequer 101 is required for being a warranted exchequer and deputy exchequer. This course covers the documentation needed to get started as an exchequer, what is required to hold the office and the rules and responsibilities of the office. This class is also open to anyone interested in becoming an exchequer or seneschals who want exchequer training. We'll explore the different methods of brewing tea and drinking through the ages. Focusing mostly on the Chinese experience, we'll make tea according to Lu Yu's instructions from the Tang period, we'll proceed through time to Ming dynasty loose leaf oolong and make a stop in Korea to talk about and drink a tea that contains no camellia sinensis.

This class will go over the basics of how to grow medieval vegetables including garden preparation, medieval vs. modern varieties, seed and plant sources, and basic storage/preservation options. Some medieval vegetable seeds will be available.

Bransles dances for everyone! In this class we will learn some common bransles that are used in the SCA. If you can walk you can probably do these bransles. List of bransles to choose from for this class. - Maltese Bransle - Clog Bransle - Washerwomans Bransle - Scottish Bransle - Pinagy Bransle This class is for all ages, all dance levels. Second class required for the training and renewing the MOL warrants. This course continues on the information shared in MOL 101 and highlights some of the different tournament styles.

We will discuss how to plant and grow varieties of roses that were grown in period. I will cover where to find period varieties, when to order and plant them, where and how to plant them, and basic care over the course of year.

Have you longingly watched people play with fiber and spindles, but felt too intimidated to try hand spinning? Come play with a wide variety of fiber spinning tools during this session. Bring your own spindles to show off, or let's troubleshoot ones you don't love yet. This session will include some demonstration, and discussion of various period fibers and period sheep breeds. The class goal is to have fun and give hand spinning a "whorl"!

This is an advanced Italian dance that we love. Stefan and Evelynne have learned it and would like to share and promote this lovely 1 couple dance. It breaks down easily into pieces.

This class is intended to give an orientation point to anyone interested in Chinese history. I will cover the major dynasties and periods of disunity from the beginning of the Imperial system (Qin dynasty, 221 BC) to the Ming Dynasty (end of the Middle Ages, 1368-1644). We will not go super in depth into any of these because of time restraints, but I am happy to host a follow up class that focuses on any specific time period at a later university session if folks are interested.

This class will dive into how medieval people preserved their plants & animals for later consumption. We'll also discover which of these techniques are still in use today. Students will get to taste a few examples of foods preserved using medieval techniques.

This class is discuss physical adaptations for thrown weapons for those who have physical impairments preventing the Thrower from throwing in the traditional manor. There will be a demonstration, weather permitting, so students can see changes in throw style based on physical difficulty.

This class covers the general use of the programs all MOLs are expected to use to file reports and record fighter authorizations.

This is the 101 class to cover all the basics and more about being a Chronicler in Atlantia. As a canton, baronial or kingdom chronicler, there are prioritized information that needs to be distributed to the populace as well as whimsical, congratulatory and helpful information. The Kingdom Historian uses our record keeping to write and keep the Atlantia's history "current", if you will, and available.

We all know what European regalia looked like--crowns, coronets, sceptres, and orbs--but how many of you know what the symbols of power in East and South-East Asia did and do look like? Join me for an overview of some of the traditional symbols of the right to rule in this realm of the world, both Period and contemporary.

Are your weaving tablets all mixed up? Something go wrong with your band, but you don't know what? Did you follow the directions, but your weaving on the bottom of the band not the top? Did you get surprise weaving assistance from your toddler or pet? Then this is the class for you! We'll be focusing on the most common ways that 4 hole tablet weaving can get all mixed up, how to troubleshoot, and how to correct those issues. If you have an in-progress piece of tablet weaving that needs help, feel free to bring it. This class is beginning weaver friendly.

Scrolls are an awesome place to add some “bling”. It is just as true today as it was in medieval times. Let’s talk about gold, some of the traditional and modern alternatives, and then play a bit - experiment and play with options and gold leaf. Kits available for a small fee to cover supplies. Note: Your fingers and clothing may get sticky if you are messy!!

Learn how to garb up in this great summertime wear! We will discuss its use today and its use throughout the Mediterranean during the pre-17th century period. There will be liner fabric if you’d like…normally 5-6 yards of 60” fabric is used but, if you’re less that 5’1 or so, a sari will suffice. Also tie beltline rope or wide trim would be great. I have large kilt pins for sale…$6 a pair. The traditional ones are large fibulae with perhaps a heavy bead necklace between them.

Make a basket to accessorize your finest frock or to use for your daily tasks. You will learn how to make a traditional style market basket, but you get to choose the size and handles. All the many variety of sheep breeds can be enticing for a novice fiber artist, yet overwhelming. Being able to pick out a sheep breed appropriate for your hand spinning, naalbinding, knitting, or weaving project can take your research to the next level, and can be a lot of fun. Do the sheep need to be horned? Double coated? Anything else? Icelandic, Jacob, Shetland, Merino and other period sheep breeds will be discussed. With a little luck, fiber samples of some period breeds will be available for hands-on examination.

All of these dances are very easy. This is a mixed set of English, French, and Inns of Court dances. The Italian is covered in another class. We will shoot for 6 dances and see how it goes. The dances are Montarde, and Pease Branle for the French, Lorayne Alman for the Inns of Court, and Upon a Summer's day, New Poe Peep, and Heart's Ease for the English.

Learn where to start serving as a Minister of Arts and Sciences for your local SCA group. Class will cover the Handbook for MOASs, the resources available for MOASs, guidance on how to implement tasks and fulfill requirements, plus plenty of time for Q&A. Class will be recorded and published after University.

The second quarter of the fourteenth century Florence was riddled with famine, plague, and war resulting in a large debt and stalling economy. To recoup funds, new sumptuary laws were passed in 1343 that taxed high fashion women's dress. Each transgression was recorded, preserved, and modernly published in Draghi Rossi e Querce Azzure. I have been translating these Latin dress descriptions into English to gain an understanding of Fashion in this era. This class covers the political climate in 1340's Florence, dress types in this period, and dress descriptions from this record.

Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) within the scope of SCA Arts and Sciences activities is the focus for this class. We will cover a small portion of DEI basic concepts, how DEI has been supported and not supported in the SCA A&S community, then suggest how mistakes can be made into learning opportunities. Students will benefit from bringing the following materials: patience, openmindedness, and a notebook. ;) Students will also benefit from taking DEI 101 virtually on Sunday.

Introduction to simple rhythms played with Zils, Zills, Sagats or Finger Cymbals. We will learn the following: - 3's (Gallop or Longa) - Baladi - Rolls - Military There will be some zills to borrow but if you have them, please bring them. These patterns can also be learned by clapping. This class will not be recorded

So you'd like to start embroidering with silk. That's fantastic! What kind are you going to use? Reeled? Spun? Floss? Flat? Thrown?....What the hell is 'thrown' silk?! Do you have a preferred brand? Should you wax it? What size should you use? Will you need a laying tool or stiletto?....No not the shoe. Where do you find it?? And how much is it all going to cost?? These kinds of questions can get any beginner feeling a bit overwhelmed. This class will have definitions, descriptions, touchable examples, suggestions, and sources to try and help you figure out what kind of silk thread would be right for you, your project, and your wallet. Class set for 2hrs to allow for questions, discussion, and hands-on time with examples; class may not take the full 2hrs.

Everything one needs to make period arrows can be found growing somewhere in Atlantia, but it helps to know what to look for. In this class I will combine Agriculture/Forestry and Archery with a focus on bamboo/cane and coppiced wood as materials for arrow shafts, and wild turkey feathers as fletching. I'll show examples of these materials, then attendees will practice processing and straightening arrow shafts and peeling, applying, and trimming feathers. Time permitting, I'll also share some different ways to construct nocks and talk about making metal or bone points.

Learn beaded edges for cup covers, table linens, veils... just about anything you would like to embellish. We will be making a cup cover. All materials supplied except for scissors. This class will not be recorded.

A discussion of the Game of Chess. From its origins in the East and how the game changed in play and in looks as it moved to the West. They will be a display of game boards from different Countries and different Ages.
