Laughing At God: King John and Atheism in the Angevin Empire
Upon hearing that the Pope intended to put his entire kingdom under interdict, "Bad" King John famously laughed, causing a scandal throughout his court. But was this was just a misstep born of political naivety or the reflection of his personal beliefs? John offers a window through which to investigate early atheism, religious philosophy and performative piety in the 12th-13th century. Examining John, his court favorites and contemporaries, we will look at the burgeoning "unbelief" or indifference to religion that serve as a precursor to the official coinage of the term "atheism" in the 1500s. |

Evolution of English Ladies’ Fashion During the Wars of the Roses, Part 1: Clothing the Body
Few portraits or illuminated manuscripts were produced in England During the Wars of the Roses, frustrating most students of fashion history. Brass, stone, and alabaster effigies produced in Britain help us understand how fashion evolved during this era, when English sartorial standards diverged from the better known silhouettes of French and Burgundian ladies. Recent work on reconstructing clothing and headgear from the 1450s-1480s has improved our understanding of the weight and quality of the materials and layers necessary to reproduce fashions. This two-part class will attempt to establish a timeline of women’s fashion as preserved on effigies and to identify the individual components of clothing and accessories across the differing artistic conventions used by stone carvers, brass engravers, manuscript illuminators, and glass painters. This class is based on the teacher’s ongoing research and the enormous collection of photographs she has taken in parish churches throughout England. |

"Joyes desir": Monastic Courtship Dance in Sixteenth-Century England
The Gresley Dance Manuscript was written circa 1490, antedating previously discovered written records of English dance. Little is known about the Gresley Dance Manuscript and the text has gone largely unexamined by historians. I argue that the dances recorded in the Gresley Dance Manuscript share choreographic similarities with continental European dance forms, specifically sharing choreographic elements associated with courtship. I ultimately argue that the Gresley dances may have been recorded in the Gresley Priory, suggesting the presence of complex dance forms which feature choreographic markers of courtship in a monastic setting. This course will be taught in a lecture style. |

The Astrolabe
The Astrolabe is an astronomical instrument used to calculate the positions of the stars in the sky. Appearing before 100 BCE, it was developed significantly in the early medieval Islamic world and proliferated throughout Africa, Europe, and India.
Astrolabes are a visible part of a deep tradition of science and mathematics that was known before the Middle Ages. The breadth of locations where astrolabes were constructed shows just how widespread this learning was. The astrolabe was often combined with other instruments and so could be used for many types of calculations. Metal astrolabes also became status symbols, and the beauty of their mathematical patterns were embellished by instrument makers to produce works of art that survive to this day.
We’ll look at animations of the night sky to see the world as the ancient astronomers did. We’ll see the transformation of the sky that the astrolabe employs and see a bit of the mathematics necessary to construct it. We’ll see how to use an astrolabe, and how similar devices are still used today. Finally, we’ll do a survey of some interesting and beautiful examples of astrolabes from history.
It’s not necessary to have an astrolabe for the class, but if you would like to play along at home, instructions for making a paper astrolabe can be found on Master Richard Wymarc’s excellent site: https://www.astrolabeproject.com/constructing-an-astrolabe/ |

Occupational Bynames in the SCA
There is a deep tradition of occupational bynames across Europe in our period of study, names that go beyond the obvious Tailor, Baker, Tillman ... Marschall (German stable hand); Berier (Old ENglish thresher); Verder (Old French guard of the forest, the judicial officer of the King's forest). Exploring less common names can help build out a more dimensional persona that has a wholly unique name. It can also provide a different research avenue into areas of study like Agriculture, Forestry, Banking, and Military. We'll discuss cultures that used Occupational names, sources, and how to document them for registration in the SCA if there is interest. |

Evolution of English Ladies’ Fashion During the Wars of the Roses, Part 2: Dressing the Head
Getting the Shot at an SCA Event
Doing photography at the SCA has been a fun yet tricky pursuit. One of the most rewarding things for me is seeing someone put down their phone and be able to be in the moment, since they know someone else is getting the shot. Getting around an event to help document it can be an incredibly rewarding venture. It also can be incredibly frustrating. In this class I am going to talk about how to shoot different activities at events with a focus on the technical side of shooting.
While photography distinctly isn't a period activity, it is invaluable for the organization, to preserve the memories for those already in it, and to promote to those that don't yet know us. The better prepared you are, the better for the organization as a whole.
Everyone in the SCA is doing something and often they never get anything to show off from it. Helping people capture moments is incredibly rewarding. The better prepared you are to shoot good photos the better everyone looks. Also, the better prepared you are the less that you are looking at the photo edit screen wishing it had just been just a tiny bit sharper/centered/brighter/angled differently/ or whatever you wish had just been a little bit better.
This will be a talk about managing the camera, information on different settings to use, things to expect and to be ready for when shooting a SCA event, and lessons learned about what works and what doesn’t. This class is aimed at novice to intermediate photographers. However, if you are a pro shooter you may still find value in topics covering some of the challenges that are unique with what we do.
You do not need to have an expensive camera set up to be part of the class. Quite a lot of the technical discussions will be relevant to those shooting with any kind of camera including the one on your phone. |

Renaissance Venice By the Colors: An Overview of Sumptuary Laws and Customs
Unlike most other places in our period, the sumptuary laws of Renaissance Venice were more concerned with prescribing what should be worn by the elite than with prohibiting what should not be worn by those of lower ranks, though women's sleeves were a perpetual source of concern.
We will discuss the togati of Venice, their distinctive style of dress, the rules which governed their (limited) sartorial choices, and touch on the few other sumptuary laws governing clothing that Venice issued.
The instructor will also present possible "creative anachronisms" of how to interpret these dress standards to reflect rank, especially Peerage rank, within the Society. |

Astronomy and Nobility
What did people know about astronomy in the Middle Ages? What would your SCA persona have known? How would astronomy have fit into their world view? It likely would have been more than just the use of “astrology” as we would define it today (that is, using the positions of objects in the sky for divination).
Many of our personas, even going back to early in period, would have had knowledge of astronomy, sometimes more than many people know today. Later, astronomy was considered an important part of the education of a refined person. We’ll discuss what was known at the time, how that knowledge was developed, why it was considered important, and how it was shared through education and writing. We’ll hear some examples of historic people, and in particular learn about the peculiar case of the Danish nobleman-astronomer, Tycho Brahe. |

Fabliaux
This class is for the poets/poetry enthusiasts among you who would like to investigate the funny, seedier, saltier side of medieval poetry-the fabliaux. These are the "racy" French poems that amused one and all with their deft turn of phrase and wordplay. Though the jongleurs, who were credited most with this form, did not pen the ditty that begins, "There once was a man from Nantucket," because that is altogether too tame for a fabliau, they did produce some very creative and even awe-inspiring poetry whose subject matter is not for the faint of heart or young of age. The class will delve into the forms, themes, and comparisons of the French form to the similar "racy" forms found in other languages and cultures. |

Drumming and Rhythms from the Caliphate Court of Harun al-Rashid
For a long time, SCA middle eastern percussionists have had to rely on modern belly dance rhythms as the main and often only source of drumming repertoire. As a baby-scadian in the long ago, I remember being told “Yes, these are modern, but we don’t know what rhythms were actually played.” Since then, time and scholarship have marched on, and now we DO know what rhythmic modes were used by elite musicians at the Abbasid courts (and beyond). Intrigued? Come and learn more. We’ll cover in brief, the medieval sources, the modern scholarship, and then we’ll dig into the rhythms themselves. If you have a drum - frame or goblet - and want to bring it, by all means do so. If you don’t have access to a drum, bring yourself and your hands. These rhythms can all be learned by clapping. |

How to Get the Best Pictures: A Class for Autocrats, Vigil Organizers, Webministers, and More
Getting good pictures of your apprenticing, household joining, belt-accepting, wedding, arts and science display, demo, performance or even your whole event is a gift you can give others. Like a site token that you get to take home, pictures can keep the memories alive, or for some who are overwhelmed in the moment, show them details they never saw. They're not just good publicity for website and facebook, some of them become a defining memory for members or a way to join in for those who were not at the event.
If you organize anything in the SCA photos will not, and should not be your first concern. Or your second. Or your third. But there ARE things you can do to make it easier for SCA photographers to be as inobtrusive as possible AND get the best shots.
This class is not just for autocrats but for SCA families with smaller or bigger ceremonies, people in charge of activities they like to see photographed, artists who want to get better pictures of their work, households, court heralds and more. If you have an interest in how 'what you do' gets photographed, I may have some tips! |

Abbasid Clothing: Terminology & Culture
Shalwar, Kamisa, Qaba. Most Middle Eastern personas call their clothing by these terms regardless of our specific culture. We frequently have a look that reads as Persia or Turkish in the SCA. But our personas would have recognized multiple cultures, religions, and occupations from each others clothing. And would we really all use the same words for the garments? In looking at Abbasid culture I came up with an abundance of clothing terms. Many more words than I had clothes! So I dove into the rabbit hole of clothing descriptions and cultural rules around who could wear what and when. This class is my thought process on how to call steps and figures in a way that fits the music, with the hope of turning dances that people might not click with into dances that they happily do while singing the dance to the music. |
