Revenge schemes, incitements of violence, and bloody feuds are often as not the work of the women in Old Norse literature. They are not here to plead or comfort, but rather to challenge the male protagonists to take action, to right perceived wrongs. Controlling the Rapier Fight: A Dive into Finds and Gains
This class explores the tactical approaches in controlling the fight against your opponent by introducing and exploring the Northern Italianate Fencing concepts of Finds and Gains.
Finds and Gains are fundamental components of blade mechanics for controlling your opponents actions, optimizing your defense while forcing your opponent into obedience. For this class, the concepts of finding and gaining your opponents' weapon through the lens of manipulating your opponent will be explored through discussion and drill work. The class will start by describing what finds are and their differences with gains, then explore how to properly establish finds against the opponents' blade, then ways to transition from a find into a gain ultimately leading to a technically sound and safe attack through the opponents' defense.
This class is primarily intended for the general intermediate fencer, but novice fencers and experienced intermediate fencers will certainly benefit from this course. Additionally, while these concepts are applicable regardless of preferred weapon forms, the discussion will focus solely with single rapier in mind.
Students will need to supply their own heavy rapier, a fencing mask and gorget. |
