Beginning Assisi Embroidery
Assisi Embroidery is a form of counted thread embroidery used primarily in the 13th and 14th centuries in Italy on items for religious purposes such as altar cloths. By the 16th century this technique was also being used for household items such as pillows and aprons. It is characterized by a background filled with cross stitch, or long-arm cross stitch and the motif itself is left blank.
In this class students will learn a little bit about the history of Assisi embroidery and will work on a small project to practice the technique. We will be stitching monograms which can then be turned into pin cushions or needle books. No prior stitching experience is required, and materials will be furnished for a small fee. The students will keep all their materials at the end of class so they can finish their embroidery piece. |

The Art of Woad
Painting bodies with woad is an art. Let my decades of experience help you expand your artistic toolbox and demystify the process. — In this class we'll talk about historical designs, particularly the art of the early Britons, looking for ideas and context. We'll talk a little bit about how to visually break down what we're seeing. And we'll talk about some best practices for placing that artwork upon your subject. — Woad paint and brushes will be provided, but feel free to bring other body paints if you prefer. Likewise feel free to bring a partner if you'd like to practice on someone else. Otherwise, practicing on your own arm or leg has a long and delightful tradition. — By the end of the class, I hope you'll feel more prepared to face the daunting stare of the blank canvas, feel able to enjoy the alchemy of turning flat reference into 3D art, and—most of all—feel ready to decorate your community with beautiful, celebratory woad. |
