This class will focus on designing and creating target faces (artwork) for target archery competitions, training, and fun shoots. Target faces are the designs that cover the front of an archery target, the most common being a set of colored concentric circles used for aiming and scoring. The goal of this class is to stimulate ideas on how to provide more diverse and interesting target faces and improve aesthetics while still offering opportunities for archers to train and compete. A variety of topics will be covered, including: elements of good target design, different types of targets, themes and storylines, inspirations, construction materials, and how to make targets look less mundane. |

Bloody Minds and Hard Hearts: Women's Work in Old Norse Literature
Revenge schemes, incitements of violence, and bloody feuds are often as not the work of the women in Old Norse literature. These women of the north are starkly unlike their peers in Old English literature; they possess agency. They are not here to plead or comfort, but rather to challenge the male protagonists to take action, to right perceived wrongs. The primary text for this class is _The Cold Counsel: The Women in Old Norse Literature and Myth_ edited by Sarah M. Anderson and Karen Swenson. This class will not be recorded. |

Through the Baronial Looking Glass
This class will be a discussion of similarities, differences and strategies for being landed Baronage for a larger Barony and being landed Baronage of a smaller Barony. Does size affect how things work? Does it affect how to get things done? What are the different strategies for working with your populace in the different sized scenarios? How does the population of Peers who live and/or play within your Baronial borders influence the "culture" of your barony? Bring your questions and ideas and let's talk about all these and more. This class is for anyone - whether you have been, are currently, or someday might consider running for a landed Baronage position...or if you are simply curious about different aspects of baronial culture. |

The Astrolabe: Make and Take
The Astrolabe is a mechanical instrument that can be used to calculate the positions of the stars and sun in the sky. In this class, we’ll make a paper astrolabe and walk through a few of the ways to use it.
By the Middle Ages, many other calculating instruments were incorporated into it, and it became a major teaching tool for astronomers throughout the Middle East, Europe, and Northern Africa.
We’ll look at animations of the night sky to see the things in nature the astrolabe was used to calculate. We’ll see a bit of the mathematics needed to construct it and see some examples of artistic astrolabes from the past.
(Paper astrolabe kits will be available to students. No fee is required, but a contribution of $5 would be appreciated!) |

Archery Targets - Let's add Motion!
The joy of target archery is having something interesting and challenging to shoot at. However, most archers in the SCA are only exposed to static targets, and very rarely have the opportunity to see reactions from their missile's impact. This class explores options for adding motion to targets to make the archery experience more interesting and competitive. This motion could be in a straight line, rotational, or from targets that move when they are struck. Examples will be provided to demonstrate how motion can be added to a variety of target types, from the simple to the complex. Emphasis will be placed on making these targets easy to setup and transport. Hopefully, this discussion will spark new ideas as we plan our next archery event or practice. |

Conflict Resolution Methods - People not Heraldry
Learn proven methods of resolving conflict between two people, both as a participant and a mediator. You will be able to take home two simple processes that can be used to facilitate a conversation between two people intending to clear up a conflict. Examples will be given and at least one practice conversation will be done during class. Methods based on the Clearing Model from Woman Within International with additional material from the book Crucial Conversations and The Conscious Leadership Group (https://conscious.is). The SCA Anti-Bullying Policy has brought to light the importance of resolving conflicts ourselves before harsh consequences result. SCA members, officers, and leaders of all kinds can benefit from using these methods.
I learned these techniques from over 20 years working as a volunteer officer and participant in the Woman Within program (www.womanwithin.org) and close ties with the ManKind Project program (www.mkp.org).
This class is especially recommended for SCA Seneschals. |

Medieval Dagger Plays: Fiore's Guide to Getting Close to Your Friends
The largest section of Fiore's 1409 combat system manual is the section on dagger plays. Most of the plays feature an unarmed defender dealing with a dagger-wielding attacker and showing them the error of their ways. Fiore says, "If I want a dagger, I will take yours." Due to significant grappling, there is very limited application of these techniques to SCA combat forms. This class will cover a best-of sampling from the first half of the dagger section. Anyone is welcome to audit the class. People who want to try the plays need to be adults and will need to wear eye protection (loaner shop glasses will be available.) The plays involve hands on arms body contact and minor grappling with no throws or falls. The class may be recorded on video. |

Good-As-New Garb: A Hands-On Primer for Mending Textile Wear-and-Tear
The practice of mending clothes is about as old as the practice of making them, give or take a day. This class covers the history and technique of darning, a mending method which uses running stitches to weave new warp and weft into existing fabric with holes, tears, or thin spots. Darning can be decorative or, with enough patience, pretty much invisible. Practice materials will be provided, but feel free to bring your worn and holey garb and your preferred sewing notions! |

Alchemy Across Cultures
Alchemy is often thought of as the quest to
transform base metals into gold, but its true legacy is much broader. It is the study of the natural
world, expressed through symbolic language and secret practices, and it spans many
cultures—from ancient Greco‑Roman Egypt to the Islamic Golden Age, from the mystical
laboratories of East Asia to the manuscripts of medieval and Renaissance Europe. |
