This class is an elongated form of the presentation I gave as part of the Study of Sages project developed by Mu'allamah Tala al-Zahra. This class helps prepare students for the judging class.

This class covers the composition of traditional English dithemic place names, starting with the relevant rules from SENA, the construction of existing place names, sources and their strengths and weaknesses, and how to put the your data from sources together into appropriate supporting documentation that demonstrates that your constructed place name is correctly formed.

Perhaps it's come to your ears that only a knight can make another knight. All of it is bunkum and hornswaggle. Come find out about the real origin stories and the early years of this crazy, lovely, bizarre, delightful organisation that we love so much!

This class will cover how to find & process your own earth pigments for the purpose of paint making.

You've at least heard of The Prince, one of the famous manuals on statecraft, by Florentine historian and diplomat Niccolò Machiavelli. This class will aim to give you a background in what was going on in Renaissance Italy that influenced his thoughts and writing. Reading The Prince in advance is expected to be helpful for getting the most out of the class, but if you want to take the class first and read The Prince second, this class is designed to accommodate you. If you want to not read The Prince at all, this class may make you question your life choices, because it's quite readable and interesting. Machiavelli gave sex advice for sleeping with both boys and women, and his era sees mass death in war, the introduction of syphilis, constant simony, and general misery. May not be suitable for young children. Never meet your heroes, particularly if any of them are 15th-16th century Popes who live more than three years. This is aimed as an introductory class for people mostly unfamiliar with why Machiavelli would advocate ruthless and unethical methods, and what historical events might have provoked his writing, and may be dull for those with a very strong background. This is an evolution of the class that I taught at Ponte Alto's Baronial Birthday Bloodbath.

Kingdom Events bids are not as hard as you thought they were! Come to the roundtable hosted by the Kingdom Bid Committee and learn about all the ins and outs of putting in a bid to run a kingdom event. We'll talk about the process of the bid, we'll try to de-mystify the Budget form, and we'll show you what a good (and a not so good) bid looks like. We will also walk through the process for the Fictitious Atlantian Kingdom Event(FAKE) event bid so that participants can see the bid process from start to finish.

For centuries various European societies resolved some of their greatest legal disputes through a procedure where two people tried to slaughter each other. This class aims to address a single question. Why? Why in the name of all that is just and at least slightly sensible would people, cultures, and entire kingdoms agree to this? In the process of answering this question we will look at the various techniques and legal practices that marked these trials, specific cases which were resolved by combat, and the lasting legacy of this practice on our own system of justice.

This course provides basic information for identifying concussions on the field and for understanding typical symptoms and symptom progression. It is relevant for marshals, fighters (both rattan & rapier), and their family members.

This will be first class focusing on the subject of time keeping from the 14th to the 16th century this first class will talk about using what are known as iron gothic clocks or iron chamber clocks. We will talk about pre 14th century time keeping briefly. From tower clocks to iron clocks We will discuss the basics structure and functions within the iron clock, this will not be a deep dive into math and mechanics. The iron clock as a personal time keeper. we will talk about its development from the 14th to 16th centuries why not lantern clocks?

Romans created artworks with stone and ceramic that have lasted through time and disasters. Then the Byzantine empire took mosaics to a new level with glass and gold on walls. Learn how these mosaics were made with the processes and tools of that time period. And see examples that Arcadia has made based on her travels around the world.

This class is needed by all Atlantian marshals as part of their warrant. It is for new MIT as well as marshal needing refresher training to maintain their warrant.

Documentation is usually the cornerstone of most gentles' fear with doing research. But fear not! This class can explain to you the differences between the three and also by which style you can make it easier on yourself. Citations may look hard, but once you figure out the pattern-you can safely face your foe. A useful handout will also be provided to use.

Have you ever been looking at A & S entry, and been curious about it? If so, you have the right stuff to be an excellent A & S judge! This class will address the purposes of judging, ways to give positive *and* constructive feedback, and how to be a learning partner with the folks whose entries you are evaluating. We will also have a short, structured discussion about positive experiences people have had with A & S judges, to share ideas of how best to encourage Atlantians to continue to create beauty in our Kingdom!

There is a focus on digital manuscript sources and documenting them for later use. Medieval manuscripts and museum objects offer a glimpse into hundreds of years of clothing, furniture, and daily life for any SCA participant wanting to upgrade their presence or their scroll work. This class will discuss naming conventions(or the lack of), searching for manuscripts online, and a brief tutorial of using a few of the major online sources. Also included is a digital handout with about 30 manuscript links from 700-1600.

How to set up and run an Event Gate. What forms are necessary, where the forms are sent after the event, proper cash handling by the Society rules. Mistress Adair and I will team teach this one because we have two different methods that are acceptable so you as Head Gate/Head Troll (choose your own title) can select the method you like to use for your gates.

A vital skill for all scribal artists - mixing colours. Join Hellen of Haldane as we mix and make merry with colours. Bring a sheet of watercolor paper or your preferred painting surface like Bristol or Perg, pencil, ruler and your paints - gouache or watercolor is preferred. A copy of the handout will be emailed prior to the class as some preparation is needed before hand.

An introduction to the role and requirements of a Chronicler in the Kingdom of Atlantia. The first half of this class is an overview of the material. The second is for questions and conversation to support the needs and goals of individual Chroniclers.

This class is dedicated to the olfactory landscape of Hellenistic Greece and ancient Rome. We will discuss the aromatics used for preparation of fragrances and their sources, methods used for processing, and contemporary views on perfuming. I will cover both written sources and archaeological discoveries.

This class covers what spinning tools looked like in medieval times. We will look at both spinning tools in art works and from archeological digs. Tools covered include spindles, distaffs, wool combs, wool cards, and niddy-noddies.

I'm going to argue that the Silk Road isn't a road and isn't about silk. This isn't a new hypothesis - V. Hansen has argued this for some time. I'll try to cover some recent research and summarize better ways to think about interactions between nomads and incipient nations. (I will revise this as my research continues.)

Learn proven methods of resolving conflict between two people, both as a participant and a mediator. You will be able to take home two simple processes that can be used to facilitate a conversation between two people intending to clear up a conflict. Examples will be given and at least one practice conversation will be done during class. Methods based on the Clearing Model from Woman Within International with additional material from the book Crucial Conversations and The Conscious Leadership Group (https://conscious.is). The SCA Anti-Bullying Policy has brought to light the importance of resolving conflicts ourselves before harsh consequences result. SCA members, officers, and leaders of all kinds can benefit from using these methods. I learned these techniques from over 20 years working as a volunteer officer and participant in the Woman Within program (www.womanwithin.org) and close ties with the ManKind Project program (www.mkp.org). This class is especially recommended for SCA Seneschals.

Silvopasture, the integrated use of trees, forage and grazing, may be shown to be a ‘natural state’ of the post-glacial European landscape that was then ‘optimized’ for human exploitation. The coming of Medieval forest laws and enclosuring upset this integrated land use. Modern EU conceptualizations will be explored to see if we can help restore nature’s balance at the grass-roots level. Class is open to all. Class will be recorded.

This class will address some of the things that get in the way of doing one of the most fun things around: singing! These blocks can include: - Am I a good enough singer to sing in front of other people? (spoiler: yes!) - How do I find songs that are good for my voice? - Where are some places in the SCA that I can sing, either by myself, or with others?

This class will cover the fundamental elements of an event bid with a strong focus on how to create a budget using the Atlantian Event Budget spreadsheet.
