Tools for Green Woodworking
The title of this class pretty much says it all; I'll share examples of some different tools including felling, hewing, and carving axes, drawknife, froe, spoon bit, etc. and considerations when searching for hand tools like these on the used market (as there were relatively few changes from early period through the mid-19th century). I'll share my thoughts on several books that have useful pictures of historical tools for specific purposes like coopering or that depict historical finds in wood. I'll talk about what I've learned so far about working green wood, including harvesting considerations and air drying, and suggest a few ideas for good beginner-level projects that make use of our forest resources in period ways. |

History of Monastic Sign Language
Monastic sign language, also known as monkish sign language, is a system of gestured hand communication by monks and nuns who observed the Benedictine Rule, emphasizing that spoken speech should be intentional, humble, and respectful rather than be negative or about trivial matters. The Benedictine Rule is estimated to be written in 530 AD by Saint Benedict of Nursia. This class will briefly cover Monstastic signed communication's history and cultural practices of the monks and nuns that used it. |

SCA Signs (Signs Created by SCAdians)
Like many large hobby groups, new jargon is created to better facilitate communication among members by creating new words or adapting existing ones to describe concepts, activities, or objects unique to their shared interest. A Pelican within the Society is not the same thing as a pelican in the modern world. Unique signs were created by Signing Communities within the SCA, particularly our Deaf Populace, meaning we have SCA jargon for both spoken and signed languages that do not mean the same thing (or anything!) outside of an SCA context. This class is to show how these signs are standardized within the Known World. Accessibility is not possible if signs are made up on a whim. This class is here to demonstrate that the SCA has standardized signed jargon that parallels our spoken jargon. |

Master Class in Creating Commedia and other Theater at SCA events, especially Pennsic
Taught by Dame Sophia the Orange, OL
Want to do theater in the SCA? Maybe even Commedia dell' Arte? Wondering how to start organizing it so you don't get crappy showtimes, empty seats in the audience, and step on toes of other SCAdians?
The SCA is not built to naturally support theater arts, but it can be done with guidance on how to avoid the land mines.
This class covers which job titles on event staff actually have the power to support theater arts, which officers, which elements of an SCA event design make it likely to support theater arts, and many more questions.
Answers to these questions come from the 33 years I've spent learning the hard way what works and doesn't work producing performing arts in the SCA (Music, Bardic, Dance, Foolery, Shakespeare, Commedia, and more).
Students in this class will have the opportunity to continue working with me over the next year to produce a capstone project of a performance at Pennsic 2026. Other SCA events for your capstone project can be considered. Signing up for ongoing mentoring is optional. |

Forgotten vegetables and pot herbs
It wasn't all just cabbages, turnips, and parsnips that got you through the winter and early spring. Skirret, orach, nettles, and purslane, and a host of other things were a vital part of many period diets. What are the glume wheats, and why were they grown so widely and then abandoned? Let's take a tour of what people were eating in England and the low countries in early period times. |

The Spectrum of Martiality
This lecture will discuss the ways in which 16th century Western Europeans interacted with a spectrum of martial behaviors from sport combat to open warfare. These behaviors were intimately tied to and often explicitly driven by contemporary conceptualizations of masculinity. Leveraging modern scholarship on history, historical sociology, and historical legal practices, I will argue that rather than viewing sport and martial combat practices as distinct dichotomous categories, martial arts practitioners in the 16th century viewed these behaviors as linked ends of a contiguous spectrum of martiality joined by the shared dimension of enacted masculinity. |

Wordsmithing 103: Interkingdom Anthropology
This is a virtual forum style class intended to bring scribes and wordsmiths together from different kingdoms to explore the requirements and expectations of award documents in kingdoms across the Knowne World. Using my handout from Wordsmithing 101 as a starting point and framework, we'll dive into the various requirements of the East Kingdom and see how these customs compare to other Kingdoms. This class is expected to run 90 minutes, but could take the full two hours, depending on how many scribes from different Kingdoms join us to share their input. Participants are encouraged to include their Kingdom in their name when they join so that we can get an idea of where everyone is presenting from.

Women & Gender Minority in Rapier - quiet part out loud
Plastron (chest protector) funnels shots to the center and makes them harder? Students/participants who don’t listen to you as a female/gender-minority instructor or marshal? Hotflashes during the tournament? People not taking shots and you wonder if it’s because you are a minority? Are you the only non-male in your local practice and feel like you are representing all gender-minorities through your mere existence?
Let’s talk about the quiet parts out loud. This round table welcomes those identifying as women and gender minority to discuss their lived experiences in rapier especially when it comes to gender related issues. Goal is to vocalize our experiences and discuss ideas on how to improve our game. These ideas can include requests on how our allies can actively and passively support us.
We invite everyone to attend to hear and learn; however request that cis-male participants use this as a listening opportunity. |

We've all struggled with slippy headwear. From Pallu to Stola, Hijab to Wimple. But for most personas, our outfit is incomplete with a bare head. This class is focused on draped cloth headcoverings, not hats.
Bring your veils, underpinnings, and questions such as:
How did these stay on in period?
What tools can help us acheive and maintain these looks without the help of stylists and servants?
Can veils help me cover non-period hair?
Most styles discussed will be historically female, however participants and personas of all gender identities are encouraged to participate! Please bring a rectangular piece of fabric at least 1.5 yards in length and 2 feet wide.
Vani ka Bhediya (mka Mandy Haecker) began studying headcovering practices in 2014. Over the years, she has spent several months covering her hair for religious reasons, done LARP combat in a turban, and worn headwraps in response to medical hair loss. |
