Elizabethan House: Introduction to Persona
We all have a persona of some sort, sometimes several. This class is about enhancing a persona, creating or collecting the material things that your persona would have had, and how research into the era and place your persona would have lived can help you create a space at events that transports you to a different time and place than your modern life. |

Choosing a Registerable SCA Name
Names are important. They are often the first thing other people have on which to form an opinion of us. Princess Daisy of the Purple Unicorns might not give the best impression. (No, really. Someone wanted that name . . . ) We can invest a lot of time and emotion in coming up with a name. However, if it doesn't follow reasonable historical practice or general SCA standards, it won't be registered. In this class we'll discuss what the SCA requires in a name and what was generally historically done. |

Introduction to Natural Philosophy in the Middle Ages
In this course we will start by defining what we mean by Natural Philosophy. (To help you decide if you want to take the course or not, it encompasses physics, chemistry, geology, biology, and meteorology among other subjects. No math involved, though!) We will then spend some time talking about the founder of Natural Philosophy, Aristotle. After briefly considering the influences of Islam/Muslim and the Latin Translators, we will examine the Medieval Natural Philosophy as taught in the Universities of Oxford, Paris, and Bologna from 1200 to 1500. Finally we will conclude with a discussion of how Natural Philosophy empowered the Scientific Revolution and became the “Mother of All Sciences”. |

An approach to learning about period prayer beads that will allow you to make a version of your own while also learning about the basics. Bead kits will be available- they will contain 53 beads and some stringing materials or bring your own beads to class if you would like. We'll talk about how praying on beads got started and how prayer beads evolved. We'll be making tenners, chaplets, a short mala, a tesbih or a full 53 bead rosary. I'll even show you how to tie the knots between the beads if you'd like- for that you should bring a pointy tweezer to facilitate knot tying. Questions will be answered to the best of my ability. Examples will be available for "look and touch". A handout will cover the highlights on prayer bead usage through the centuries as well as basic instructions for making various bead configurations.

Heraldry within scrolls is both beautiful and functional, but it also needs to be correct. This class will help scribes and illuminators learn to emblazon heraldry with style and accuracy and is designed for the beginner or intermediate level scribe. Learn to identify different elements of the arms and the achievement, and when to use them. Learn the difference between the blazon and the emblazon, invected and engrailed, fusilly and gyronny, sejant and rampant. Never again worry that you may have missed some small detail on an award that would prevent the scroll from being presented in court and to the award recipient. |
