This class is to help new scribes, or those more experienced scribes who need a brush up, on the basics of scroll layout and design. We will cover the required elements for scrolls in this Kingdom, layout, ruling for calligraphy, choosing designs, and how to deliver scrolls. Handouts will be provided, as well as a basic scribal kit to use in the class and take home with you. Everyone will leave with a scroll blank drawn out and ready for illumination and calligraphy. Youth participants are welcome to join in.

Learn how to take your inspiration from photo to graph. We'll be working from a photo I'll provide in order to learn the basics. You will then be turned loose to work from your own photo. Students must bring pencils (mechanicals work best) and an eraser. I will provide the graph paper.

A love of dance for fun and as a social grace begins at an early age and continues for life. This class will teach children of all ages (including adults) a few basic dances common in the SCA, and a little bit of social grace as well. Parents of younger children are asked to stay and assist their children. No partner needed, no experience needed, just a desire to have fun and learn something new. All steps will be taught.

Found in Birka (Gotland late 700--late 900) are the Birka knots and Stag. Made of very fine wire twisted together again and again, they are surprisingly sturdy items. This class provides diagrams and construction advice for recreating these nifty bits of history. Patience and some hand skill are all that are needed.

Court can be very similar to theatre. But, it’s a very particular sort of theatre. As the herald, you’re the emcee who keeps the show going and helps to give it direction. An approach to learning about period prayer beads that will allow you to make a version of your own while also learning about the basics. Bead kits will be available- they will contain 53 beads and some stringing materials or bring your own beads to class if you would like. We'll talk about how praying on beads got started and how prayer beads evolved. We'll be making tenners, chaplets, a short mala, a tesbih or a full 53 bead rosary. I'll even show you how to tie the knots between the beads if you'd like- for that you should bring a pointy tweezer to facilitate knot tying. Questions will be answered to the best of my ability. This 2 hour round table discussion will touch on topics that effect fighters and their ability to get out and succeed on the lists. Heraldry within scrolls is both beautiful and functional, but it also needs to be correct. This class will help scribes and illuminators learn to emblazon heraldry with style and accuracy and is designed for the beginner or intermediate level scribe. Learn to identify different elements of the arms and the achievement, and when to use them. Learn the difference between the blazon and the emblazon, invected and engrailed, fusilly and gyronny, sejant and rampant. Never again worry that you may have missed some small detail on an award that would prevent the scroll from being presented in court and to the award recipient.

You need to eat at events, but what are you going to bring? What about feast? This class will not only cover feast gear choices, but table manners and the kinds of food eaten by the Elizabethan persona. We'll talk about choices for lunches and off-board feasting, setting the table to create a period atmosphere, and how to grocery shop, so that you don't have to spend hours making all the food yourself. Note: Food samples will be provided, including wheat, unpasteurized dairy, and (cooked) meat products. Please be aware of possible allergies.

Italy played a pivotal role in the Middle Ages and its contributions to medieval culture are incalculable. That culture is kept alive in these Current Middle Ages through the Italian personas of our members. Come learn the basics of constructing your Italian name for the SCA and touch the onomastic grandeur of that nation.

An exercise in how to improve your Middle Eastern dance in the SCA by taking cues from period art. This will be interactive, with the student participating in the discussion and working on choreography ideas of their own. A few period rhythms will be demonstrated.

Ever wanted to have spiffy looking arrows, but couldn't afford all the fancy tools needed? I can show you a simple and inexpensive way to give your arrows your own personal flair. The student will learn the basics of space planning, clutter control, storage and lighting. The student should have an idea of the size of their space and the dimensions of the furnishings they will be using.

Focus on the pouch styles found in Rutt's History of Handknitting. Charts for the colorwork will be available. We will also discuss the hangar and drawstring treatments. If you've made this kind of pouch, bring it and we'll share ideas for technique and finishing. Advanced beginners can manage this class.

This class will discuss the finer details of reconstructing 16th century Italian dances. Some of the details that will be discussed include applying punctuation, verb conjugations, understanding the overall dance terminology, and matching the dance to the music. A basic familiarity of 16th century Italian dancing will be needed.

Confused by coronets? Baffled by bowing? Do you find the mess of titles in the SCA confusing, or worry about what to do when you're called into Court? This class will cover basic etiquette at SCA events as well as specifics for court.

Looking to add depth to your scrolls? In this class we will look at the various ways visual depth is represented in manuscript miniatures and borders during Society period, paying particular attention to the use of light and shadow in late-period miniatures. Students should bring sketchbooks, dark (soft-leaded) pencils, and erasers.

The class will cover making a last for shoe making with a pair of socks and duck tape. Students are encouraged to bring socks, tape, and something to stuff the lasts with, cloth scraps preferred, to fallow alone in the class.

Armory is so much more than pretty pictures (although they are pretty pictures!). But you don’t have to be a herald to appreciate it, nor should you be. heraldry plays a role in every aspect of Society endeavor. This class will help you to appreciate and understand it more.
