Some of the most beautiful works of art in illumination are found within letters. We'll take a look at different examples of illuminated letters and then start on creating one for use as a scroll blank or a standalone piece.

Working as a unit, the Atlantian army is more effective. This class is for both the Heavy Fighter and the Combat Archer. Discussions on how to improve the communications, tactics and limitations of Combat archery in support of the Heavy fighters and the battle goals.

Learn the different roles and responsibilities in a small unit and how to work well as part of a team

Modern mundane law prohibits us from distilling alcohol, but we do have the means to approach recreations of the stronger period beverages. We will discuss period distillation and three legal ways to recreate these beverages in the SCA. As there will be samples, the class is 21+ only.

No experience necessary. Will cover several beginner dances in a variety of genres. All steps will be covered.

An overview of subtleties including many not made from marzipan or sugar plate and sources of information about them.

We will make 2, maybe 3 different printing blocks for block printing on fabric. Decent manual dexterity is required as well as comfort with a razor knife. Not child friendly. Email instructor for materials list.

Discussion about the social and economic triggers for the Northern European migration with additional focus on archeological evidence

" What the heck is a seneschal, or an exchequer? What does a herald do, and how are baronage selected? This course provides an overview of local group offices and key event staff positions. For each role, it describes what they do, how they're selected, and any heraldry or symbols that go with the role. It also lists ways that a new SCA member can get involved or help in each area, even if they don't want to jump into an office themselves."

This was a part of the court system and was a substitute for a jury trial. There were specific rules. It may still be legal in some states.

"This class is an introduction to basic music, how to read basic sheet music, and learning to play a simple scale. Students are encouraged to bring an instrument if they have one. If help is needed to tune it, please bring it early if possible."

Come try out commedia! Commedia is 16th century, Italian, improvised comedy plays with stock characters, mix and matched plots, and no script! This class includes history, improv games, and students acting in some scenes!

"The student will learn the components of a period glove and what characteristics make it a period glove, materials used to make one, the pattern design of the hand, the layout of the pattern on an animal hide for the leather gloves, the construction of the pieces and the tools used to do so. There will be discussion on the types of gloves and their decoration through the medieval centuries. We may even explore information about the English glove guilds and how their influence on commerce affected the glove trade between England and France. Each student will receive a mini-sewing kit to experience hands on sewing of leather. This interactive class helps the student understand the period glove. The information for the class was developed from a personal thirty-year study of the period glove, to include two trips to England for a close examination at the Victoria and Albert Museum. I want to share what I learned from the over 100 pair of gloves I have made. So, if you too have passion for the glove or mitten, join me in my ""glove affair"". A glove pattern will be available for sale at the end of class for $5. "

Will this fabric drape the way the gown in that portrait does? What thread should I use for this garment? Gathering the right materials is essential to getting beautiful results from your costuming efforts. This class will cover terms for fibers, fabrics, and weaves as well as introducing some importance tools for hand sewing. We will consider outer layers, linings and interlinings, courtly garments and everyday clothes. We will discuss both period fabrics and modern substitutes including wools, linens, silks, velvets, brocades, synthetics, and leathers. This class targets a serious beginner or an advanced costumer. The first 15 students can purchase a materials card with 72 samples of fabrics and threads.

This is the renewal class for archery marshals coming up on their 3 year renewal requirements. It is also the class for new marshals (MiTs or Marshals in Training) should take to start their process. Any interested archer is also welcome to attend.

This class is intended as a primer on how to be a marshal for armored combat. We cover rights duties and expectations that are set for those who would volunteer to serve in this capacity

Exchequer 101 and 201 are required for being a warranted exchequer and deputy exchequer. This course covers the documentation needed to get started as an exchequer, what is required to hold the office and the rules and responsibilities of the office. This class is also open to anyone interested in becoming an exchequer or seneschals who want exchequer training.

A survey of the history of prostitution, from the late Roman era to 1600 AD. We will be covering such topics as the formation of red light districts, brothel management, contraception, municipal laws, church law, and the garb and identification of a prostitute within this time period. Handouts are 5$ but you can have it on CD for free. Adults only

The construction of an iron smelter of clay, form the early iron age to 1500. 1 credit granted per hour of participation.

A one hour class that goes over basic techniques of illumination and gothic textura quadrata script. Sketch pads and pencils are encouraged. If you have a wide nib calligraphy pen that you like, that is also encouraged. Bristol board will be supplied to work on a small project if time permits. Fee covers the cost of a Shaeffer broad point cartridge pen and handouts.

"These terms are used frequently when discussing swordplay. Come learn the practical understanding of these concepts and how they impact your fighting. We will turn these concepts around to improve your understanding of when you are vulnerable and when you may strike safely. Request students have mask, gloves and sword although some loaner gear will be available. More than theoretical discussions, this class really does focus on practical applications of these concepts."

Turn theory into practice with drills to help learn how to fill the roles covered in the first class along with fundamental melee techniques. Participants should bring rapier gear

"Mead. Nectar of the Gods. In essence, honey wine. Have you ever wanted to brew some? Wondered how? Wonder no more, come learn! The only prerequisite is patience, as mead can take some time to come of age. This will be a demo/lecture class, and will discuss everything needed to start making your first mead, differing opinions on process, period recipes and the different types of mead commonly brewed. There is no fee for the class, but a minimum of four kits will be available for ~$25 each, to start your first gallon. Contact the instructor (berryjw@yahoo.com) if you want more information or know you will want a kit, as they will be first-come at the event (when they're gone, they're gone). No age limit, but this class teaches the production of age-restricted product (alcohol). Additionally, samples will be available to those of legal drinking age (bring ID)."

No experience necessary. These dances all follow a simple pattern of doubles, siding, and arming, with the same chorus between each. All steps will be covered.

You planted your herb garden, it has blossomed into a beautiful little ecosystem of culinary delights and self-healing, and now you’re ready to begin herb crafting. So… now what? This class takes you from the herbs in your garden (or the fresh herbs purchased at the grocer) and introduces you to a variety of ways to preserve the goodness of those herbs for later: quick dry, slow dry, vinegar/canned, freezing (and the benefits and downfalls of each method); also, how to wash, dry, and hang for the least amount of mildew. How long do herbs last in these various preserved states? How do you know when to throw them out?

We will make at least one stencil of the design of your choice intended for textile painting. Manual dexterity and comfort with a razor knife essential. No appropriate for children. Request materials list from instructor.

History, techniques and tools used in the ancient art of container growing of trees by the Chinese and Japanese warriors.

An introduction to being a royal retainer for those currently serving as a retainer, may possibly be a retainer in the future, or wonder what the people standing behind the big chairs are doing. We will discuss the responsibilities, etiquette, and expectations, as well as the benefits of serving your royals or baronage in this position.

The class will discuss types of rope, how rope is made, various useful knots and how to successfully coil a rope for future use. Knots to be discussed/taught include clove hitch, bowline, half hitch, double half hitch, prussic, sheep shank, figure eight and others.

Tennis is a modern example of a family of games dating at least as far back as the High Middle Ages, and there's ample documentation for us to reconstruct what periods relatives of the game entailed. Class will include discussion of the history and ample time for actual play.

This class will discuss those situations in bardic where nerves get in the way. Competitions, competition formats, and documentation will be discussed. The class will also cover some tips on performance, dealing with stage fright/performance anxiety, and resources for building your bardic repertoire.

In order for a youth (age 6 to 17) to become authorized to participate in martial activities with other youths they and a Parent/Guardian must attend the required Youth Combat class and observe a Youth Combat Practice. This class is being offered at Fall University! No equipment or gear is needed. If your child wants to become part of the youth heavy fighting community this class is required. A parent of legal guardian must attend the class with the child.

This class will cover the various layouts of scroll design, how to get three different designs from one illumination, and encourages students to bring samples of their work if time permits.

A meet and greet for member's of the Atlantian Knitter's Guild, The Keepers of the Clewe, or any who are interested. This is a time where you can ask questions and knitting in the SCA and learn some new tricks of the arts from the Knitters Guild.

The class will discuss several methods for speed shooting for archery.

Class covers the how to teach physical skills. How to modify instruction to fit the age limit and mental capacity of the student. Will include discussion on teaching the physically impaired archery.

Every motion of the sword is a guard to the knowledgeable fencer - N. Giganti This class aims to help you become the knowledgeable fencer. We will cover practical applications of the "standard" 4 Italian guards and then throw it all away with understanding how to effectively counterposture any situation. Request students have mask, gloves and sword although some loaner gear will be available.

This class will bring the drills and theories covered in the previous classes together into drills for your entire unit. Participants should bring rapier gear

Want to brew and don't know where to start? Interested in the differences between Medieval and modern brewing? Just want to learn something new? Come hear the basics of brewing! Discussion will include several ways to get from zero to alcohol over as little as five days, or as much as one year.

Learn/practice Chestnut, Scotch Cap, and Grimlock: three dances that follow the English Country Dance pattern with different steps during each "chorus".

Want to know how to run a Magic Tourney? Want to be able to follow along with Crown Tourney? This class will also discuss how to properly run the elimination-style tournaments used in the Kingdom. This class will discuss how to properly run many of the non-elimination-style tournaments used in Atlantia.

Learn about the medicinal and edible herbs and plants of the Anglo-Saxons as referenced in the Lachunga and Bede's Leechbooks. Tools, charms, and treatments will be referenced. A salve will be created during class.

Part one is the history of pottery and where and how clay can be found locally.

The SCA can be overwhelming to say the least, and the expense of getting your kit together can seem daunting. As a newcomer, I found ways to upcycle things around my house for use in the SCA. Garb, feast gear, camping hacks, you name it! This class will provide guidelines and inspiration for raiding your clothes, linen closets, deck, lawn, garage, and parents’ attic to find all sorts of things YOU ALREADY HAVE that can work in an SCA event! We will also discuss inexpensive products from your local Wally-World-type-store that can be great stand-ins while you save up your money for some nice linen spiff.

A history of the rose as cultivated by man. The development of the yellow rose. The quest for the true blue rose. Roses in perfume, folklore, and medicine. The story of the tudor rose. The damask rose. The evolution of grandiflora, floribunda, shrub, climbing, and hybrid tea types of roses. The rose as food, and some recipes for students to try at home.

Join a session about basic introductions in the SCA. How to bow, present a leg, and, most importantly, how to handkiss. And ending lab will include actual handkissing, so please wash hands before attending.

"This class is an introduction to Renaissance era music. The class does involve participation that may include singing, clapping, playing a drum or other instruments. Students are encouraged to bring an instrument(s) if they have one. If help is needed to tune it, please bring it early if possible. "

Learn the balance between being a wallflower and grandstanding. You can live your dreams of shining in the spotlight while also serving the event with just a little planning ahead and using your performing powers for good.

For those that would like to become a warranted Youth Armoured Marshal you must have this class. This class will cover how to become warranted, background checks, rules for youth, recommended equipment, training methods, authorizing fighters, running melees and tournaments and more.

Basic longsword for cut and thrust based on the Armizarre. Students will learn the basics of stance, movement, and wards. Students will learn to de-escalate power. Bring a longsword of any type or a dowel rod taped at the grip.

This class is intended as a primer on how to be the marshal -in-charge of an event. It assumes that the individuals taking the class are (or will become) well -grounded in their own disciplines. It is the required second class to become a marshal.

"Exchequer 101 and 201 are required for being a warranted exchequer and deputy exchequer. This course offers the basics and some tips on how to correctly record items on the report and to make your reports easier to do. There will be a review of the differences between the reports used for SCA Inc. and the MD subsidiary. There will be time afterwards for questions. - Prerequisite: Exchequer 101"

How to make a salve for cuts, burns and bruises. We will learn how to customize a basic salve for your personal needs. Bring a jar to take home your salve!

Hands-on class practicing a variety of shading and highlighting illumination styles; how to adjust painting techniques in order to best capture different medieval aesthetics.

A tour of Mix and Match scroll texts with stated Kingdom level award scroll texts to meet legal requirements

Class covers intermediate archery skills; form, release, focus and mental preparation for the SCA archer. Each individuals form and shooting style will be critiqued as well as a discussion on the technical requirements for an archer's equipment.

Martial history class on the development of the Japanese yumi bow and its significant history in Japan. Trace developments and the impact the bow made on Japan's military class.

"This class focuses on the strong blade work of Capoferro and Giganti. Learn how a small difference in blade positioning can make a huge difference in control. From more effective counterpostures to how to gain your opponents sword, these universal concepts can be adapted to almost any style of rapier fighting. Request students have mask, gloves and sword although some loaner gear. Learn how to enter measure safely, strike your opponent with control and recover back out while remaining untouched."

Learn the basics of commanding a small unit

No experience necessary. We will cover some of the most-often done, including Petit Riens. All steps will be covered.

This class is intended for the complete novice sewer, or the sewer who has never had any formal training in the art of sewing or use of sewing materials. We will cover basic materials including fabrics, needles, thimble, thread, wax, and buttons. Techniques covered will include the basic use of these materials, running stitch, two stitches to finish a raw edge (whip stitch and blanket or button-hole stitch), sewing on a button, and mending a tear. The intention of this curriculum is to provide the student with the basic skills required to sew two pieces of fabric together, sew on basic fasteners to hold a garment together, and make needed repairs to garb.

Galenwhat? Juniwho? An opportunity to learn more about spices used in medieval recipes and in SCA feasts (mainly specializing in Northern Europe recipes). Taste, touch, smell both in their store bought and natural state and learn some medieval recipes that use these fabulous ingredients. Beginners guide to understanding and appreciating spices not necessarily found in everyone's cabinet. Note, there will be interaction with spices so allergies should be a consideration in signing up for this class.

Why should you consider having a Communications Deputy on your event staff? How can you use your website, social media presence, and email as well as other traditional promotional materials to promote your event / group / etc? We will also explore how to create and manage a communications plan and discuss various communications and organizational tools that can help you accomplish your goals.

What events would everyone have known about and talked about ie: what would have been the banner headlines if there were newspapers?

Learn how to compliment people, both for mundane life and in the SCA. Flirting and non-romantic compliments will be covered.

"This class will introduce the notation of the period guitar (4-course and 5-course guitars), lute and vihuela manuscripts and compare the period notation to modern guitar tablature and standard notation. Examples from several manuscripts and composers will be examined, including French tablature, Italian tablature and alfabeto. "

This class will concentrate on shimmies and the arabic. Any level of student is welcome. Ages 8 & up

It can be difficult to figure out how to construct the legal weapons that are allowed by reading through the rules. In this class we will show you how to build each weapon and discuss other ways that it can be done. If you want to complete a weapon and take it home with you please bring the pieces to class with you. PVC is prohibited. 1. Division 1 age 6-9 : Golf tube, shaved rattan with a diameter between ¾ and 1 inch, siloflex with a diameter of ¾ inch, or PEX tubing with a diameter of ¾ inch. Some history of painted & printed textiles will be shared while actual stenciling of your project is happening. Wear something you are comfortable painting in or bring a cover/apron. Request materials list from instructor.

Part two is hands on making of pottery and last two hours. People will be shown hand build and throwing techniques. They can take their piece(s) home with them. Prepare to be messy.

Demonstration of converting malt barley and hops into wort, which in turn ferments into beer. This process involves large periods of time watching liquid become and/or remain hot, during which a discussion of brewing is fairly requisite. Drop by for ten minutes, or stay through all four hours - either way beer will be made! As it will be several days before any alcohol is actually produced, this is open to all ages, but (as stated above) this does involve fire and up to nine gallons of boiling liquid - children should remain under close parental supervision. Those of legal drinking age are encouraged to bring/share/critique anything brewed. 1 credit granted for each hour spent in the class.

This is a survey course, primarily dealing with making Iron/Oak Gall ink with an introduction to other forms of inks.

In this class, you will learn the tools, the terms, and techniques. You set up a simple project using a simple pricking. Bobbin lace pillows, pins, thread, bobbins and stands will be provided for use only. The class handout includes the Pricking with instructions and comes with six pairs of simple bobbins.

Learn to shoot the Japanese Yumi bow. This class will focus on actual shooting. Learning the proper stance, thumb draw and draw technique for Japanese style archery.

How to make a Flemish bow string

The basics of conversation with, controls on and manipulating the difficult situation and person. This will be a lecture class, bring an open mind.

Find the line and make it yours! Learn basic concepts from Fabris to create strong lines. Use them to defend yourself and vanquish your foes! Gain your opponents blade with knowledge, confidence, and historical style. Bring a sword! (no mask required)

This class will cover an assortment of common set piece tactics. Participants should bring rapier gear

These are from 1500 England but are different from the English Country dances you have seen. Fun and easy to learn. No experience necessary.

This class will cover all of the forms and procedures used with Youth (not Minor!) Combat.

Smell and taste some of the more common spices used in Islamic Spain and in Morocco. *Please be aware of any possible allergies that you may have. If you have any questions, please contact me.

"This class is for all royal liasions, autocrats, members of the retinue, head retainers, Baronage, and others wondering how to handle a visit from TRM, TRH, or other visiting Royals at your local event. What is the etiquette of inviting and hosting royals? What might be requested from your group? What information should you ask for? How can you make such a visit special for your group and the visiting royals?"

We will discuss what basic items no first aid kit should be without.

Everything you need to know to be a Minister of Arts & Sciences in Atlantia!

During the reign of Elizabeth of York, Henry VIII's mother, a bonnet style unique to English women appeared. It's exact shape - initially a sharply angled peak over the forehead and heavy black veil brightened only by a strip of ornately decorated fabric - evolved over the subsequent 50 years but remained fashionable, as evidenced by the monumental brasses and carved stone effigies preserved in English churches.We will examine the shape of this distinctive bonnet, theorize about the materials and construction methods necessary to recreate it, and review the steps used by the teacher to reconstruct a bonnet shape like the effigy in the church at Godshill, Isle of Wight.

Required class to become a warranted Rapier Marshall in the Kingdom.

Not marriage, not birth, just sex. It's your Western Civ class with the juicy bits left in. From the illicit frescoes of Pompeii to Aretino's invention of modern pornography. Handouts are 7$ (They are very large and expensive to reproduce) but you can also have it on CD for free. Adults Only

Learn how to make flat bread and cheese on an open fire. We will review Northern European recipes from Norse, Scots (Irish), Anglo-Saxon, and Germanic sources. Cheese and bread will be made and sampled during class.

There will be an official youth armoured combat practice! If your child has any armor pieces bring them to university. There will be loaner gear available for those that do not have all or some of the required armor. Please bring plenty of water, staying hydrated is a very important part practice.

Open to all Aspiring, Novice, or Established scribes to discuss preference in materials, techniques, layout and design, and other subjects pertinent to our art.

Lines pretend to be simple but are LIARS! Learn what your lines are and aren't doing for your art. See how and when different line technique were used throughout period and who used what lines. You don't have to be a scribe or artist to gain appreciation for some awesome lines in art.

"This class will introduce you to the basics of running an event archery range, including target construction, shoot ideas, prize shoots and keeping the points even, safety, prizes, communication with the autocrat and a special section on working with kids on the range, and setting up a kids range. I will provide a handout.

Put your skills to the test and participate in guided exercises covering the topics discussed throughout the day. Participants should bring rapier gear. Prerequisite: Partiticipants that list in this class have to have taken Melee drills in a 5X5 context and Leadership in a small unit

This is an easy, fun, flirty, bouncy, 16th century Italian dance for separate couples. No experience necessary, but it is a long, high-energy dance, so we will devote a whole hour to learning it slowly.

This class will cover the forms and procedures used in the ever-growing Atlantian Equestrian divisions.

Some history of painted things while creating templates, larger than standard paper, to be used on tents, shields, tabards, etc. Request materials list from instructor.

Conflict resolution and Baronial Pollings. This class is required to get and maintain a Seneschal warrant in Atlantia.

Part three is a discussion on firing and glazing techniques.

This is a class on a piece of Roman/Greek garb called a Peplos. Beginning with some background information and history on the Peplos, moving into patterns (handout provided) and construction. Students are welcome to bring a flat bed sheet (full size), and make their own Peplos while we are in class.

Garb does not need to break the bank! You, too, can have a basic SCA wardrobe for less than the price of one off-the-rack medieval garment. Learn how to shop for garb in your own closet and at local thrift stores. Re-think and re-use modern clothing. Suitable fabrics and styles can be found for use as-is, almost as-is, or easily re-sewn into several basic garments. Patterns can help guide you in purchasing the right items to create what you want. Several pieces of garb acquired and created this way, as well as mundane clothing purchased for future garb, will be available for demonstration.
