Introduction to Natural Philosophy in the Middle Ages
In this course we will start by defining what we mean by Natural Philosophy. (To help you decide if you want to take the course or not, it encompasses physics, chemistry, geology, biology, and meteorology among other subjects. No math involved, though!) We will then spend some time talking about the founder of Natural Philosophy, Aristotle. After briefly considering the influences of Islam/Muslim and the Latin Translators, we will examine the Medieval Natural Philosophy as taught in the Universities of Oxford, Paris, and Bologna from 1200 to 1500. Finally we will conclude with a discussion of how Natural Philosophy empowered the Scientific Revolution and became the “Mother of All Sciences”. |

Topics in Natural Philosophy: Cosmology
Cosmology is the study of the origin, structure, and space-time relationships of the
universe. In this course we will examine the state of cosmology in the Middle Ages.
We will begin by examining its origins with Aristotle and Plato. We will then develop
the “standard model” of the universe as understood during the Middle Ages. We will
then examine some of the problems that the Natural Philosophers of the Middle Ages
investigated. Although the Introduction to Natural Philosophy course is helpful, it is not
required. Also, no knowledge of mathematics, astronomy, or physics is required. |
