Taking a Story From Written to Told
Learn how to take a story from written to told by actually helping me do it. The story we will be working on is the story of Sigurd the DragonSlayer from the Volsungsaga. I have written two or three versions of this story, none of them really all that good. We will work on the point of the story, which character's point of view to use, how to adapt the story for modern listeners, the first line, last line, and outline of the story, memorizing and rehearsing the story, changing the story based on rehearsing it, rehearsing it again, changing it again, (you get the idea) and finally telling it. Participating in the process will illustrate several truths: Even Laurels produce garbage. If you work on it, garbage can become something wonderful. On the other hand, garbage can remain garbage no matter what you do. Half of art is knowing when to stop. The other half is learning how to recognize garbage and when to throw it away. It takes ten bad ideas to come up with one good one. Don't start a project without knowing what your goal is. Telling stories takes work. And hopefully other useful lessons. Handouts will include my "How to Tell Stories in the SCA", the original story from the Volsungsaga, and my latest unsatisfactory version of the story. The teacher of this class is Mistress Dervila ni Leanon, OL, a well-known storyteller who has been paid to look like a fool. |

Almost Baroquen - 16th Century Italian music
In sixteenth-century Italy, the Roman school of music was perfecting late-Renaissance musical style, while the Venetian school was groping its way towards something new: the Baroque, and opera. Listen to snippets from the late fifteenth through early seventeenth centuries; talk about the styles, and also the composers - relatively few of whom got away with murdering their wives. |

Dances for Demos - “Do You Wanna Dance?”
Montarde Bransle, Malteze Bransle, and Official Bransle: "When you’re teaching dance to non-SCAdians, it’s important to start with dances that are fun and easy to learn for a variety of ages. This line-up fits the bill. Come dance the bellydance-inspired, Malteze Bransle. Toss the wenches up in the air while doing the Official Bransle. We’ll finish off by spinning and weaving with the Montarde Bransle. We’ll also discuss the easiest ways to teach dances to beginners and suggest how to get people comfortable on the dance floor. Remember: If you can talk, you can sing. If you can walk, you can dance." |

When a medieval or Renaissance recipe calls for pepper, it can mean any of a variety of peppers and pepper-like spices from the time. Come taste some of the “peppers” that would have been used in period: cubeb, long pepper, grains of paradise, guinea pepper, and black pepper. Decide which ones pair best with different foods. We’ll also discuss the best places to shop for and find period peppers. |

I will talk for a while about the history of the instrument known now as the tin whistle, including how it is related to flutes and bagpipes both, and how to make one (in the abstract, not as a practical class). I’ll teach you how to play a short popular tune. If you don’t know how to read music, that’s OK, I’ll provide fingering charts. If you have a whistle or two, please bring them. I have one or two loaners, but not many. You can buy them from Aenor and Efenwealt, online, or in some music stores. You’ll get a handout and/or a QR code and URL so you can access the handout online. |
