An easy way to make your 14th century look more accurate and fashionable is with a fancy new hairstyle! Come learn how to dress your hair in some sweet braids straight out of the latest manuscript! Your hair should be shoulder length or longer to get the most out of this class.

In this class students will learn to create their own leather bound journal specifically using the long stitch technique. Students will leave the class with either a completed journal or a good head start to completing it on their own. Students will receive their own set of tools to continue exploring the art of bookbinding.

We will be making lamp black pigment to take home with instructions for making it into paint and ink. There will be containers provided for your pigment transport covered by the class fee.

This class is for both performers and the event staff that wants to work with them. When event staff wants to get music, dance, shtick, or other performing arts into their event, there are precautions you need to take to ensure the final performance is what you want. When performers want time and space from event staff to enjoy their art at SCA events, there are precautions you need to take to ensure the final performance is what you want. I’ve performed music, dance, theater, and misc schtick for over 20 years in the SCA including running the Performing Arts Program at the SCA 50 Year Event, and I’ll share how performers can work with SCA event staff to get spotlight time in a way that serves the whole event instead of just one’s ego. Performers of all levels can serve kings, autocrats, the populace, and the SCA mission as well as their own artistic calling with a few precautions.

Introduction to the techniques of twisting fibers to create a stretchy fabric used through the iron age. Students will be creating a small sprang bag on a pvc pipe frame to learn the basic pattern.

The ancient art and modern science receiving feedback, even when it's unfair, unsolicited, badly delivered, or frankly, you're not in the mood. Learn and apply modern communication techniques for the SCA world.

Will discuss how local groups can include youngsters at their local practices, or add special shoots for children. Will discuss practical and legal aspects of including children, and display suggested youth archery equipment.

Basic class needed to get or maintain a Seneschal warrant in Atlantia

This class will be a basic review all aspects of heraldry that we use in the SCA and how we use them.

We will cover an overview of everything you need to know to get started striking your own coins. The first half of the class will be a lecture/discussion format covering these general topics. Making punch tools and prepare the die blanks. The process of laying out the designs and sink them on the dies. The various materials and processing to make the coin blanks. And, of course the striking the designs into coins. Space permitting last part of class will be striking coins using dies and blanks provided by the instructor. You will be able to take the coins you strike with you.

Practical and fun uses for Origami, the wonderful art of paper folding! All ages are welcome! No materials needed!

Creative writing course designed to up your descriptive writing game utilizing period examples and models.

Introduces new brewers to mead-making: supplies, sanitation methods,ingredients, period brewing methods

Beginners and youth are welcome! Most of the class time will be branles, which are some of the easiest and most popular dances in the SCA: Maltese/Turkish, Horses, Pease, War, and Charlotte Branles. We'll also briefly go over the other types of dances in Arbeau's 16th-century manual, Orchésographie.

Are you interested in learning basic (single) wire weaving? This class is designed for students who are interested in making chain without the use of expensive tools or heat. The technique I teach has been used by the "Vikings" and many other cultures. We will also discuss common problems and how to fix them. If you need glasses for close up work, bring them.

What you should know about concussions and SCA fighting, including identification, causes, prevention, long-term impacts, and risk factors

Have you ever finished a garment, put it on, and discovered it just... wasn't right? The sleeves wouldn't bend, it didn't drape nicely, or it wrinkled in big folds? In this class, we will be discussing ease, fit, and how to change the way you measure to improve the function and appearance of the garb you pattern. Please bring a measuring tape and something to write with. Students will leave with a full set of measurements and a detailed list of pattern drafting resources.

Lessons from L'escola de Cuina de Mestre Tomas. Towards a philosophy of cookery in the Current Middle Ages. From rote to synthesis. Concept to menu. Medieval to modern technique. Redaction.

This class for fencing newcomers focuses on practical functionality in combat, based on the fencing manual of Marco Docciolini. All experience levels welcome, as the lessons are easily replicated. This class assumes knowledge commensurate with SCA rapier authorization. Please check in with MOL at Registration table before class. Please bring a rapier, mask, and gorget. Any other normal protective gear is recommended.

We'll be going over harp basics (tuning, finger positions, harp care, etc) and addressing any questions or issues brought up! If you have a harp, bring it. In this class Baroness Daniela will discuss her process in creating a pattern book based primarily on the Tudor Pattern Book. She will talk about the importance of pattern books in general and some of the different ways they were created and used.

Improvisation skills can improve anyone’s portrayal of their persona, execution of court shtick, and everyday conversations. Not just for the period theater art of commedia dell’ arte, improvisation skills can benefit everyone. This class will teach basic improv skills through group and solo theater games. Sophia the Orange has been trained by the Washington Improv Theater in Washington DC, the most advanced commedia teachers in the SCA, and practiced improv for 16+ years. All students are guaranteed to pick up something useful in this class.

Learn how to make a youth combat sword and talk about required armor. Please bring two contrasting rolls of duck tape to complete the sword.

This is class 2 of 5 in Melchior's Period Crypto-riculum. Completing all 5 courses will unlock a special puzzle ... if you think you're up for the challenge. In this class we will be focusing on the cryptanalysis of two period ciphers. Techniques will be discussed & demonstrated for various ciphers with a special focus on two. Students will then be turned loose, under adult supervision, to test their new skills on several puzzles based on period examples. Materials provided. Ciphers will change between class presentations so there's always a reason to retake it!

Class is presentation and practice in cutting different styles of fletching for arrows using full length feathers. Cutting is demonstrated and practiced using commercial feather cutters as well as creating custom cutting stencils. Each participant receives a packet of materials that allows them to practice and create fletching suitable for mounting on arrow shafts.

Conflict resolution and Baronial Pollings. This class is required to get and maintain a Seneschal warrant in Atlantia.

"Alcohol," "lemon," and "cotton" all come from Arabic, a medieval *lingua franca.* Through games and activities, students will learn to say period-appropriate names, words and phrases to enrich their personas - useful for Middle Eastern personas *and* Normans, Italians, Romans, Byzantines, Spanish, Crusaders, seamen from any port, and those of the Silk Road! Class conducted in the Latin alphabet.

The marshal discipline specific class to become a rapier marshal in Atlantia. This class is required every three years for active marshals. NOTE: Field Marshal 201 is also a required class to become a rapier marshal.

Starter armor doesn't have to be expensive. Learn a simple method for making plastic-backed leather armor using a rain barrel, welding aprons, and a bag or two of rivets.

Learn about the development and history of embroidery, early period embroidery motifs, and the techniques necessary to recreate them. We’ll discuss several historical examples; fabrics, embroidery threads, and dyes commonly used in different regions; and how to work with period materials or approximate them where the original sources are unavailable. We’ll also discuss transferring designs to a garment, appliqueing separate embroidered pieces to garments, troubleshooting, and making beautiful embroidered garments that will hold up to camping, laundering, and fighting. The fee covers the cost of the packet. I also make the packet available online for free.

A Review of the Scribal guidelines, tips and the most questions asked regarding scrolls and the handbook. If there is enough time, questions and followup at the end.

We will discuss how to plant and grow varieties of roses that were grown in period. I will cover where to find period varieties, how to plant and care for them, what to do about pests (both insect and diseases), and, if there is time, propagating rose plants.

Mastering this deceptively simple period form with Lord Gideon ap Stephen former Royal Bard and mundane English teacher with a degree in English with a focus on Shakespeare and Poetic Nerdery.. Come prepared to create! (Equipment: pen, paper, etc)

The course will go over lessons learned from redacting and brewing an authentic Medieval English Beer with a focus on understanding medieval recipes and the use of supporting sources, making allowances for how modern ingredients have changed, and mimicking the medieval process on modern home brewing equipment.

Start to finish, period sourdough bread! Play with bread dough in its various stages, and taste it by the end of class. Two professional bakers will show you how easy bread is, and discuss period methods as we work. Take home sourdough starter to make more any time.

Why did he move that way? Why didn't she call that good? That sounded really hard! What are they talking about? It can be difficult for non-practitioners to understand the goings-on in armored combat. This class looks to lift the veil and provide spectators with some of the basics. You'll learn to see some of what the fighters see as well as what marshals look for and will have a chance to practice your newly won skills.

This class intends to show the variety available in the Gresley collection. We will start with a little-done fun and easy dance ""What so ever ye will"". Then we will do a few moderate dances and end with one of the hard ones I know has musical cues so we don't have to work too hard. Come explore the new frontier of dance.

Based on illuminations, pinwheels were a common toy of the 15th and 16th centuries. We will examine the various styles of pinwheels and make one to take home.

Do you love Viking wire weaving but want to learn more? Come and learn double, triple weave and some fun stuff like spirals. This will be hands-on class, teaching different weaving techniques. This course will cover many of the common how and why's training plateaus occur. Along with an overview of various strategies athletes use to overcome and use the plateaus to their advantage. This is a general sports science class and not directed at any one field of combat.

An introductory-level class covering basic history of Commedia dell' Arte, the 16th century Italian improvisational comic theater, and its stock characters with opportunities to play short scenes to try them out. We will play some theater improv games, so all students will participate! We'll also cover how to make commedia happen in the modern SCA.

Well, this is the class for you! Learn how to ""E-Z Tape"" your hair with silk ribbon and a bodkin! The class will have hands-on demonstration of hair taping, and students will receive a hair-taping kit to take home. IMPORTANT: Your hair must be shoulder length or longer (bangs are fine) to participate, and please bring a hair brush and additionally a hand mirror if possible.

An examination of 12th-century women's clothing in Ireland that focuses heavily on the illumination in the works of Gerald of Wales. Construction and patterning will also be discussed.

Will discuss theory and practical aspects of building an archery loaner kit for a local group. Will also discuss kit maintenance issues and the need to offer quality equipment to our guests. A model kit will be on display.

A beginning course for children, introducing them to the world of heraldry. It will teach the basics, tincture, shapes, charges, positions and the like.

Take an hour (or two) and we will practice some dance music. We will pick a few tunes from the Pennsic Pile for an upcoming ball (WOW?) and practice playing them. This is scheduled for 2 hours, come for one hour or both. Beginners are welcome. You don't have to be coming to the ball.

Fiore di Liberi describes a system of combat for the late 1300s. Published in 1409, his manuscripts discuss a consistent set of combat principles which he applies to wrestling, dagger, swords, axes and spears. It has application to armored, rapier, cut and thrust, and even mounted combat within the SCA. This course will provide a quick introduction to Fiore's system using daggers and longswords and introduce basic terminology, guards, and techniques for learning the system. Current Fiore reference material will be discussed and some slow, unarmored, combat moves will be demonstrated. Students are encouraged to bring an appropriate rattan, metal, or waster longsword. The instructor will have a few extra available for use.

A look at the lives shepherds lead in different parts of Europe. The migration patterns of flocks in mainland Europe, to the small crofter flocks in Britain. We'll look at where they went, what they wore, what they ate, and how they lived.

Atlantia goes back 40+ years. As Kingdom Historian, I will go over the early years of our Kingdom. There will be visual aids and artifacts.

A basic overview of bardic arts in the Society. Also a singalong class with lyrics for newcomers to use as the basis for their own bard books.

This class will introduce students to a simple system for learning, practicing, and fighting Cut and Thrust swordplay with single sword or sword and buckler. It is based on the Bolognese style of swordplay. Students will need a mask or helm, gorget, and a C&T authorized sword. A 39"" length blade or shorter is preferred.

Try something new to you or brush up your skills with an introduction to Italian and English Country dance. All steps will be taught as well as easy Italian and English Country dances. No previous dance experience required. No partner required. Just a desire to learn and have fun!

Limp bindings were the unglamorous workhorses of the Middle Ages. They contained accounts, timber inventories, even listings of who fell asleep during Mass. Versatile and ubiquitous, they also were fragile and relatively unvalued compared with the art books produced for conspicuous consumption. In this lab we make a limp binding based on a palimpsest in the city archives of Talin. Paper, cover materials, and thread are provided, but students should bring their own scissors, a ruler (12” is fine), and a sharp pencil.

You will learn the techniques to create the effect you want from block printing and stencils. This is a hands on how to class with paint, dress accordingly/bring cover. BRING: scrap fabric, whatever craft or house paint you have on hand, a few brushes, small roller, chalk, plastic to protect your area and of course, your blocks and stencils. Also have a look at you cookie cutters, jar lids, recycle bin. If there's time I will briefly cover how to make your own blocks & stencils. NO CHILDREN UNDER THE AGE OF 14 WITHOUT AN ADULT. A beginning introduction to making and working with black substrate. Students will spend roughly half the class dying a 5" x 7" piece of pergamenta to take home, the other half will be spent going over how to apply the layout on a pre-dyed 5" x 7" piece of pergamenta and what paints lend themselves to application. Exchequer 101 and 201 are required for being a warranted exchequer and deputy exchequer. This course covers the documentation needed to get started as an exchequer, what is required to hold the office and the rules and responsibilities of the office. This class is also open to anyone interested in becoming an exchequer or seneschals who want exchequer training.

Come learn about the evolution from the 24-rune to 16-rune alphabets, short twig versus long twig, "staveless" variants, and abbreviations. This class will discuss how to design tournaments that are challenging and entertaining, finding a balance between competition and amusement.

No, we're not going to play rugby with the choristers. Rather, this course will provide a gentle introduction to performing Shakespeare. The class level is aimed for: actors who may not be as familiar with Shakespearean performance but would like to move into that area; beginning actors who are looking for some tips on performance; or persons with little to no experience but who enjoy Shakespeare's plays and have a vague desire to perhaps get on stage and declaim. The course will cover textual research, paraphrasing, and connecting the text to performance. Attendees can bring a monologue they wish to work on, or one will be provided, as it's more fun to learn by doing! At the end of the class, attendees will leave with some new performance resources, and hopefully the confidence to take the plunge with the Bard.

Taught by the Company of the Silver Spindle. If you've never tried using a spindle, or never successfully kept it off the floor, we'll help you get started making your own wool yarn. If you are allergic to wool and want to learn, BYOA (bring your own alpaca).

This class will discuss Fiore’s approaches for dealing with an opponent wearing armor of the period. A variety of weapons will be discussed and demonstrated slowly on armored instructors. The very limited application of these techniques to SCA combat forms will be examined as well. Students do not need to be in armor.

This class will cover methods and sources used in conducting historical research. We will discuss a general approach to research that can be applied to any topic and will review advantages and disadvantages of different types of sources, as well as how to judge a specific source. All experience levels welcome.

Christian Muslim conflict is not a new phenomenon and was a factor in the Mediterranean almost throughout our time period.

If you are in search of a spark to telling stories then join me for a Story Quest where a toss of the dice will decide which way your story goes. This is a class in improvisational storytelling in which you are given visual prompts to help develop a new story either told by yourself or with a group. This is a bardic madness style challenge and is meant to help you tackle storytelling blocks and help you to awaken your creativity and imagination.

In this class we will be discussing techniques for advancing our swordsmanship through, rather than in spite of, our individual physical limitations. This class will begin with a round table discussion on what ails us and will wrap up with discussion and practical drills / techniques to help enhance our skills. There is something for everybody but there will be a special focus on addressing vision related concerns.

Have you ever wondered if there are other early Italian dances besides Amoroso, Petit Riens and Rostiboli Gioioso? This is the class for you. Come learn some fun and historically popular 15th century Italian dances that we don't dance nearly often enough in Atlantia. Depending on time and dancer skill level the class will cover dances such as Angelosa, Jove, Leoncello, Spero, and/or Voltati in ca Rosina. Previous experience with 15th century Italian dance steps is helpful but not required.

Have a tomahawk laying around or thought it looked cool to throw a knife? Me too! Come join me on the throw weapons field, learn the basics on how to throw a tomahawk or a knife. We can learn with out pressure of an event. It's fun! If you have your own weapons, please feel to bring them. Upon inspection, I will determine if we can use them on the field. I have seen some as young as 5 participate and older. If you decide to allow your youngster to throw, please see the Marshal in charge to discuss, before they are allowed on the field.

Make the only pouch an Anglo-Saxon Woman would ever want to wear. The class will teach hand sewing using period materials, stitches and tools. Some experience with sewing is helpful. Older children are welcome with a parent. Most students will complete the pouch or come very close in this 2 hour class.

Back then people made fantastic ornaments and applications using beads and Pearls on their clothes shoos and hats. I will show you the method, which will help you to make the replicas on your garb. Every level is welcome! You can bring your material, or there will be material available for a $10 fee, but if you bring your own material, no fee applies. Orihon is a type of accordion-folded scroll, using a very simple technique that you can continue to use in your modern life. I'll supply materials for 10, and instructions for more; unlimited number can join in to watch and learn.

An instructive overview of how to successfully run an Archery event in Atlantia. How to prepare, how to properly staff and how to properly follow the safety rules.

The Field Marshal 201 class is required to be taken at least once to obtain any marshal warrant within Atlantia. Current marshals are not required to retake this course. NOTE: Discipline specific marshal classes are required in addition to this class to obtain a marshal warrant.

Learn a foolproof method to lay out and draw acanthus leaves on a scroll! Students should bring a sketchbook, pencil, ruler, and eraser. We will go over basic leaf construction, scroll design, embellishments and coloring.

Based on the principles taught in the Fiore Di Liberi Overview class, we will dive into Fiore's manuscript which describes a complex decision tree for dagger combat. These techniques survive in modern self-defense and martial art techniques. This class will describe, demonstrate, and teach two branches of the decision tree exploring the depth of responses, counters and contra-counter moves. These will be different plays than were taught in our earlier Atlantian Hugs classes. The student will gain an understanding of Fiore's instructional approach and the currently available reference material so that they may continue their studies outside of the class. Students may bring a dagger simulator and optional eye protection or the instructors will have a few extra available. The Atlantian Hugs class from previous Universities is not a required prerequisite.

Exchequer 101 and 201 are required for being a warranted exchequer and deputy exchequer. This course offers the basics and some tips on how to correctly record items on the report and to make your reports easier to do. There will be a review of the differences between the reports used for SCA Inc. and the MD subsidiary. There will be time afterwards for questions. - Prerequisite: Exchequer 101

There are many different approaches to infighting, and this class is oriented toward helping you find the one that best matches your body type, skill set, and thuggishness. The class will include extensive slow work to examine tactical problems. Bring your full fighting kit, including mask, swords, dagger, and rigid parry.

This track is for you. Masters Findleach and Gerlach will guide you in how to use planes, chisels, saws, marking gauges and much more. This is hands-on all day. Come and go as you like. Student will have a private 15 minute session where they will spare with a senior fighter while being videotaped. The fighting will then be critiqued and feedback provided. End goal is to provide video of both sparring and critique to student for their own use.

This class is aimed at teachers of all marshal disciplines, although examples will primarily be pulled from rapier. We will discuss unconscious and conscious biases you might have about fighters of different sexes and genders, and how to recognize and remove the stereotypes from your teaching styles. We will also discuss drills and exercises that can help new students who are struggling with internalized gender stereotypes.

Learn proven methods of resolving conflict between two people, both as a participant and a mediator. You will be able to take home two simple processes that can be used to facilitate a conversation between two people intending to clear up a conflict. Examples will be given and at least one practice conversation will be done during class. Methods based on the “Clearing Model” from Woman Within International with additional material from the book Crucial Conversations. The new SCA Anti-Bullying Policy has brought to light the importance of resolving conflicts ourselves before harsh consequences result. SCA members, officers, and leaders of all kinds can benefit from using these methods. I learned these techniques from over 20 years working as a volunteer officer and participant in the Woman Within program (www.womanwithin.org) and close ties with the ManKind Project program (www.mkp.org).

We'll review how to weave period drafts, how to read them in modern weaving parlance and how to interpret the key weaving information given with archeologically preserved textiles. This class is for anyone who wants to understand this textile language.

An introduction to the history of and philosophy behind the Beguine movement in Northern Europe.

Will cover what a bow is, and what to look for when buying a bow. Also will cover elements of safety, arrows and general archery terminology.

Using images from period costume books and information from wills, laws, and letters of the time, we will discuss what the upper class Ottoman wore during the 1500's.

Based on the principles taught in the Intro to Fiore Di Liberi class, we will dive further into Fiore's manuscript which describes a complex decision tree for Longsword use. Building on the basic Longsword forms and the dagger plays, we will study some of the close (stretto) plays with a long sword. Halfswording and controlled grappling will be discussed.The techniques studied have, with some modification, application to SCA rapier, cut and thrust, armored, and equestrian fighting. The student will gain an understanding of Fiore's instructional approach and the currently available reference material so that they may continue their studies outside of the class. Students are encouraged to bring an appropriate rattan, metal, or waster longsword. The instructor will have a few extra available for use.
