The Mammen stitch is a very common variant of nalbinding used from Egypt to Scandinavia. This class will give you a hands on introduction to the technique. We will cover starting, pivoting into the spiral, connecting to the previous row, and increases/decreases. Students will need to have a light color worsted weight yarn, preferably wool, single ply or tightly plied, and a needle. A number 13 tapestry needle or darning needle works great. Sordid Tales Of History - The Lady Nádasdy
This "class", styled sort of like a podcast, is intended to give you historical facts and accounts of the life of Báthory Erzsébet (In Hungarian surnames come first). I will give you insights into the accusations leveled against Erzsébet as well as much of the facts that we can gleam from the few documents left concerning her life and trials. We will go over her gruesome acts (both accused and factual) in detail. We will also address possible motives for her behavior and the behavior of others in her story. |

If you are interested in learning the process of making a book in the
Islamic style, you've come to the right place. If you're familiar with
European bookbinding methods, you'll find that the Islamic style is
similar in some ways and very different in others. If you're new to
bookmaking, you've definitely come to the right place. In many ways,
Islamic bookbinding is one of the easiest of the historical
bookbinding styles.
As bookbinding takes a while to do (aside from just waiting for glue
to dry), I'm doing a series of 3 classes. Class 1 will include a brief
overview of the process and preparing the textblock. Class 2 will
involve sewing the endband. Class 3 will finish the book. A bonus
class on preparing the cover will be offered if I don't have time to
cover that info during Class 3. You can join for any of the parts that
interest you. I will also post the recordings afterwards (location
TBD) if the class time doesn't work for you. Just to be clear, this
series of classes is demonstrative only. No supplies are needed.
This is Class 2 which will cover Step 3 from the "Class Notes" (see
below), sewing the endband. Class will start at 1730 (5:30pm) PT and
run for approximately an hour.
So far I only do textile covers which are the easiest and most
versatile of the cover types. We'll talk more about the different
types in Class 3 or the bonus class.
If there is interest, I can do a more hands-on (but still virtual)
workshop where you can make your own book in this style as we go. If
you're interested in attending such a workshop, PM me on FB or email
me at nailaalzarqa@yahoo.com

Before They Wore Turnshoes: Late Iron Age European Footwear
By: Faraulf (Farolfus filius Richardi)
We know the turnshoe was prevalent in northern Europe by the Viking Age, but what about before that? This class will be a survey of historical footwear based primarily on finds from modern-day Germany, Denmark, Belgium, and the Netherlands dated from the 1st through 6th centuries CE. These shoes are typically made from a single piece of leather and were relatively simple to construct, compared to many contemporary Roman/Byzantine shoe styles. We will look at surviving examples that display a wide range of skill levels and decorative detail (or lack thereof) and discuss their patterning and construction methods. These types of shoes would be appropriate for Germanic personas from the Iron Age through the end of the Migration Period and may be suitable for very early Anglo-Saxon personas as well. |

Patterning a Germanic One-Piece Shoe
As a companion to Before They Wore Turnshoes, this class will cover the basics for how to draft a pattern for a late Iron Age/Migration Period shoe made from a single piece of leather. Starting with a well-preserved historical example from modern-day Germany, we will go over the steps involved to adapt the pattern to an individual's foot and discuss various tips and tricks to ensure a good fit and historically accurate appearance, as well as "care and feeding" of this type of shoe. |
