Many people say that a painting or an illumination is an unreliable source for documenting clothes and other objects because the viewer sees the work through the artist's interpretation. The reality is more complex than that, and I would like to introduce the worldviews that shaped the painting of Northern Europe and Southern Europe. This class will include a discussion of religion, as religious patronage of the arts was the driving economic influence of the painted image, as well as a short introduction on how to determine if the subject is a fantastic or contemporary image.

Class will go over things learned at Pas d'armes de l'Arbre d'Or. Will talk about adding period elements to tournaments. Will go over things that worked as well as things that could have been done better.

This will be an overview of period pigments, as used and discovered throughout history, where they came from, their religious significance, and their use. This class is more historical than practicable, geared to helping the modern scribe understand the medieval palette, and the progress of art throughout technological advance.

Beads of various sorts have provided the "bling" on garments for many years. In this class, we'll look at some historical examples, and then learn to bead a sample (or your own project).

This is a cooking class that teaches children how to read and interpret period recipes, they will learn how to cook two different recipes in a hands on manner and take the finished product home with them.

Tips and tricks for anyone who regularly speaks in front of large groups and wants both to save their voice and command more attention. Focus will be on how to project your voice but will also touch on other speaking techniques e.g. enunciation, speed, and pitch.

It's not just for hot dogs anymore! The use of mustard as a sauce was widely used during the Middle Ages and is still a popular condiment today. This class will discuss the uses of mustard during the Middle Ages as well as recipes and tasting.

What every seneschal needs to know and understand about exchequer reports

This class will be discussing the panel preparation for egg tempera from Cennini's Il Libro dell' Arte. There will be examples of each step in the process as well as several recipes for the specified gesso, application, smoothing, and what the finished panel should look like.

This class will be focused on discussing the use and preparation of period pigments, with recipes for binders, and actual pigments brought for display and discussion. This class will be also be discussing the chemistry of painting, to help dispel the myths about toxicity and difficulty of use that surround using period pigments, and also show the sophistication the medieval mind had regarding pigments and their use.

Brief overview of period documentation and construction of the hat and headdress styles for men and women in the Southern and Eastern parts of the Germanic lands between 1490 to 1550, includes typical Landsknecht as well as Burgher and Peasant styles. Examples of the various types will be available to try on and examine.

The purpose of this class is to provide pointers to fighters seeking to improve their physical and mental skills to perfect their game, whichever that game may be. As the name of the class indicates, this is a holistic approach to fighting and we will be discussing proper nutrition, various forms of exercise, as well as traditional and non-traditional methods of preparing your mind and your body for a bout – be either practice, pick-up or competition.

How to run a bardic circle (not competition) and how to participate in one. Includes exposure to and copies of common songs. A bardic circle will be part of the class.

An overview will be given of the historical use of natural and created embellishments for garments and hats. This will include, but not be limited to, pearls, natural stones, and glass beads. After discussing the history of bead work, equipment will be handed out and each student will outline a simple shape in fake pearls, with more discussion of how to purchase and use modern beads during the sewing process. In part two students will learn about fill patterns and will begin (and possibly finish) filling in the shape outlined in the first part. Again, during the sewing process there will be discussion of problems that can arise and how to solve them, as well as more discussion about historical accuracy. Students are encouraged to bring their own embroidery hoops. Everything else will be provided.

This is a discussion about Soapstone and Pewtercasting. We'll look at carving and talk about supplies needed to cast your carving. Site restrictions prevent us from doing any casting but our discussion should get you started.

Who were the Khazars? How did they live? Why should we care? This class will set out to start answering these and other questions. The Khazars stood as a bulwark to stop the expansion of the Islam into Europe in the 9th and 10th century. These red-haired, green eyed Jews practiced a religious and social tolerance and equality unprecedented in medieval Europe, or for that matter, modern Europe.

This class is aimed at the leaders of the small units in the Atlantian army but will be of great interest to anyone interested in SCA melee combat. We will be discussing how best to cultivate, train, and build esprit de corps in small to medium sized Atlantian melee units and how this fits into the larger picture of the Atlantian Army as a whole.

This class will look at the various accessories and items used by the Mongol people. Belts, sashes, pouches, chatelaines, etc., how they were worn and what purpose they served.

Come learn to train your body and mind for athletic performance on the fencing field. Topics will include: physical needs for rapier fighting, improving your fighting endurance, strength training for rapier, improving your reflexes, and nutritional needs for the rapier athlete.

The purpose of this class is to teach the period style and techniques of long sword combat as it was practiced in Germany in the Middle Ages. We will look specifically at the techniques detailed in the verses of the great German fencing master Johannes Liechtenauer, and the later commentaries upon those verses by Sigmund Ringeck. These techniques will be taught as they were actually used (to the best of our knowledge) in the Middle ages. They can be integrated into both SCA rapier or armored combat. This class will focus on the basics of long sword fencing and will be an active, hands-on demonstration. Students should bring some form of practice long sword they can use during the class.

Heralds in the SCA can be many things. Book, voice, tourney, display, court. . . and no one . . . NO ONE . . . is expected to be good at all of it. Or even care about more then their specific nook. For many branch heralds, they hold the job only because someone has to. Many others are isolated and don't know where to look to figure out this tangled part of the SCA. We'll discuss the herald's function in the SCA, how the Colleges work, how to best learn the job and function within the SCA. Bring your questions. I'll bring cookies.

This class is particularly suited to rank beginners and/or children. Silk threads and evenweave linen fabric will be used to stitch a simple 16th century design. Students will learn how to properly begin, execute, and end their stitching while gaining experience with historically accurate materials.

This is a look at the extant knitted trunkhose in the Museum of Dresden. These are a bit of an oddity in period knitting. The class will be a discussion of the history of the trunkhose as well as an exploration of recreating them. The class will receive the original document published by the Dresden Museum that discusses the item as well as the English translation from the original German.

Lecture will discuss techniques in converting alcoholic drinks into non-alcoholic variants. This is an open discussion following an introduction by the moderator. Discussion content will focus on non-alcoholic beverage definitions, production, SCA acceptance, and judging. This class is suitable for all levels of brewing.

This class is a continuation of the beginning long sword class. Continuing with the teachings of Johannes Liechtenauer, we will build upon the basics and explore advanced techniques. Again, these techniques can be integrated into both SCA rapier or armored combat. Students should bring some form of practice long sword they can use during the class. Attendance in the beginning class or last year's long sword class is highly recommended, but everyone is welcome.

This class will look at the process, art or black art of taking a recipe from your dining room table to serving a hall full of people. We will be looking at the things that one needs to consider for the best mix of foods to optimize your ingredients and how to keep track of what you are doing. This class is best suited to cooks preparing for a large group or those who just want to check things out from what they have done in the past. While some cooking experience is desirable, it is not totally necessary.

Using the story of the Quest for the Holy Grail, Mistress Deirdre will try to show why the A&S competition (built on the model of the tournament) may not be the most fulfilling way to participate in the arts in the SCA, and how the heros of old met the new challenges presented by the appearance of the Grail.

Each participant will get a sheet of 23.75 gold, a sample sheet of gold and modern equivalents applied to paper, and a couple of prepared beds to practice on.

What happened in England was affected by what happened in Persia. Likewise, events in the farmer's hut directly impacted life in the royal palace. Here are planted the seeds of the Reformation and the Renaissance, political and personal freedoms and the emergence of science from the shadows of the graveyard to the University steps. We'll try to take in the scope of it all in an hour.

Ryori Monogatari is the oldest extant Japanese cookbook. Compiled in 1643 after a survey by the author of food and recipe throughout Japan. Though post-17th century, many of the foods can be found in much older references. In addition, it shows the influence of European food in several recipes that can be directly traced to their European equivalent.

Kumihimo is a Japanese braiding technique that is easy to learn and results in a strong braid. In this hands-on class you will learn to do kumihimo on a foam disk, which is very portable.
