Introduction to Natural Philosophy in Western Europe during the Middle Ages
In this course we will start by defining what we mean by Natural Philosophy. (Spoiler – To help you decide if you want to take the course or not, it encompasses physics, chemistry, geology, biology, and meteorology among other subjects. No math involved, though!) We will then spend some time talking about the founder of Natural Philosophy, Aristotle. After briefly considering the influences of Islam/Muslim and the Latin Translators, we will examine the Medieval Natural Philosophy as taught in the Universities of Oxford, Paris, and Bologna from 1200 to 1500. Finally we will conclude with a discussion of how Natural Philosophy empowered the Scientific Revolution and became the “Mother of All Sciences”. |

Here’s your chance to go beyond the recorder and get your hands (and lips) on a crumhorn, a dulcian, a shawm, and other Renaissance wind instruments. Oh, and if recorder really is your thing, there will be instruments ranging from 6” (the garklein) to 6’ (the contrabass). The goal of this course is the familiarize musicians of all levels with the details and practical aspects of Renaissance wind instruments (including ideas on further research and how to find/purchase instruments), and to let participants have a chance to actually try out different instruments to see if they find a new calling. No particular skill is required, although previous experience with any wind instrument is certainly a help. The planned list of instruments on-hand includes recorders, gemshorn, crumhorn, cornamuse, shawm, dulcian, racket, cornetto and sackbut. |
