Beginning Italian and Greek Needlelace
For Italian or Greek personas mid to late 1500s. Learn the basics of creating needlelace edgings in the tradition of Venice and Cyprus. This type of lace is closely linked to reticello, punto in aria and punto antico. You will learn a distinctive hemstitch used to prepare the fabric before the edge is bound off. You will then learn the technique for the binding and two basic edgings that can be made on it. The first is a row of single arcs, with or without picots. This style (without picots) is shown in a portrait of the period on a woman’s chemise. The second forms a row of squares with picots, and this is shown on a girl’s chemise of the period. Needlelace is a portable and budget-friendly art which requires only a needle and thread to embellish your garments or household linens. Students should be comfortable with a needle and thread. Open to ages 10 and up. |

Leoncello in two versions
Leoncello was one of the most popular of the 15th century Italian balli choreographed by Domenico da Piacenza, so popular that we have records of it being done in the 16th century. However, the exact dance seems to have changed and mutated as time passed. We will first learn Leoncello as written in Domenico's own manuscript, and then learn the version describe by his pupil, Giovanni Ambrosio. If we have time, we can even try dancing based on the description in letter sent home to Nuremberg by a German visitor to Italy in 1517. A familiarity with the basic steps of 15th century Italian dance will be helpful in taking this class. |

Event balancing ~ regions, number of events, focus of events.
Training ideas ~ practices, university/collegiums, lances, etc.
