Darn It!
"Feeling guilty every time you glance at your mending pile? Bring garb (or mundane clothes) which have suffered the slings and arrows of outrageous fortune (and daily wear), resulting in holes, rips, stains, and other damage. We'll repair those much-loved garments by darning, re-knitting, patching, embellishing, or in some other reasonable fashion, reclaiming your old favorites. Let's put those treasured pieces back into use.
I can bring a a rainbow of thread, needles and other tools, roving, yarn, fabrics, etc, for repairing knits and woven fabrics. Ideally, people bring scrap from making the garment, but I can offer options for those who don't have it. Bring out your mending, along with matching thread/yarn and fabric if you have them." |

Introduction to Fiore di Liberi
Fiore di Liberi describes a system of combat for the late 1300s. Published in 1409, his manuscripts discuss a consistent set of combat principles which he applies to wrestling, dagger, swords, axes and spears. It has application to armored, rapier, cut and thrust, and even mounted combat within the SCA. This course will provide a basic introduction to Fiore's system using daggers and longswords. Current Fiore reference material will be discussed and some slow, unarmored, combat moves will be demonstrated. Students are encouraged to bring an appropriate rattan, metal, or waster longsword. The instructor will have a few extra available for use. |

"The student will learn the components of a period glove and what characteristics make it a period glove, materials used to make one, the pattern design of the hand, the layout of the pattern on an animal hide for the leather gloves, the construction of the pieces and the tools used to do so. There will be discussion on the types of gloves and their decoration through the medieval centuries. We may even explore information about the English glove guilds and how their influence on commerce affected the glove trade between England and France. Each student will receive a mini-sewing kit to experience hands on sewing of leather.
This interactive class helps the student understand the period glove. The information for the class was developed from a personal thirty-year study of the period glove, to include two trips to England for a close examination at the Victoria and Albert Museum. I want to share what I learned from the over 100 pair of gloves I have made. So, if you too have passion for the glove or mitten, join me in my ""glove affair"".
A glove pattern will be available for sale at the end of class for $5.

Atlantian Hugs (Fiore's Dagger Plays)
Based on the principles taught in the Intro to Fiore Di Liberi class, we will dive into Fiore's manuscript which describes a complex decision tree for dagger combat. These techniques survive in modern self defense and martial art techniques. This class will describe, demonstrate, and teach several branches of the decision tree exploring responses, counters and contra-counter moves. The student will gain an understanding of Fiore's instructional approach and the currently available reference material so that they may continue their studies outside of the class. Flat-braiding on a Round Kumihimo disk
"The round kumihimo disk is most commonly used for variations on a spiral braid. Square (or rectangle) disks are available for flat braids (Une-Gumi), but a flat braid may be just as easily done on a round disk. This class will teach how to create a flat braid. An instruction book will be provided to all attendees, including several patterns.
Persons wishing to bring their own disk, thread and weight should bring thread for 16 ends.
Persons bringing their own disk, thread, and weight are free. Persons bringing their own disk and weight, but using thread I supply are $2. This includes persons who may have just taken the Intro to Kumihimo class, if they want to remove the braid they were making in that class to learn the flat braid. For persons wishing to buy a kit (round kumihimo disk, weight, thread for a bracelet, instructions), the fee is $5." |

Introduction to Handspinning on a Drop Spindle
"Have you ever watched people spinning at an SCA event and desperately wanted to learn but were too shy to ask? Have you tried spinning in that past and couldn't quite get it on your own? Do you want to pick up a life-long skill that has been passed down from hand to hand since time immemorial? Then this class is for you! Whether you have never seen a drop spindle in your life or you are a spinning wheel aficionado that wants a more portable tool, this class will give you the skills to start making your own yarn by hand. The class will include a short history of the drop spindle and its geographic places of use, a brief summary of the different kinds of drop spindles available, and a quick introduction to different kinds of fiber that one may spin. The cost of the class will include one ounce of fiber for you to work with as well as handouts on the topics mentioned above. We will provide you with a drop spindle that you may purchase after the class is over if you decide you would like to continue spinning. If you already own a drop spindle, please feel free to bring it to the class!
If you have a wool allergy or are allergic to any other kinds of fiber, please email me at jrargent@uncg.edu and let me know so that I may find a substitution for you.
Drop spindles should be $5 to purchase, but the final price will depend on whether we are able to get our spindles from our normal supplier. They are currently out but should hopefully have more available by class time.

Organizing Performing Arts in the SCA for Performers and Event Staff
This class is for both performers and the event staff that wants to work with them. When event staff wants to get music, dance, shtick, or other performing arts into their event, there are precautions you need to take to ensure the final performance is what you want. When performers want time and space from event staff to enjoy their art at SCA events, there are precautions you need to take to ensure the final performance is what you want. I’ve performed music, dance, theater, and misc schtick for over 20 years in the SCA, and I’ll share how performers can work with SCA event staff to get spotlight time in a way that serves the whole event instead of just one’s ego. Performers of all levels can serve kings, autocrats, the populace, and the SCA mission as well as their own artistic calling with a few precautions. |

Personal Identity and the Sounds of the Court: Heraldry for the Novice
Heraldry allows each person within the SCA to have a sense of identity. There are also the heralds who, by their voices alone, transport us directly into another world. But, how do we determine who is who, and what is what? This class will give the readers digest of what an SCA herald's job is, and how to obtain a device and name within the society. There will also be a question and answer session if time allows. |

The Forest and the Trees (Fiore's Decision Trees)
"Fiore Di Liberi's 1409 manuscript describes a complete combat system. His approach of ""Do A"", if your opponent ""does B"" then ""Do C"" or if your opponent ""does D"" then ""do E"" can be accurately represented as a modern decision tree. This class will build on the groundwork of basic techniques from the Intro to Fiore class and dive into the depths of the logic of the combat system by exploring two decision trees completely.
