Learn about Medieval Special effects, how we know what we know, and the volume of work we have recovered, including the so far very first acknowledged medieval play. Late Period Theater, or Commedia & the English Renaissance
Shakespeare stole a lot of good ideas from the Italian theater of Commedia dell' Arte. Commedia's golden age started in the mid-16th century with just enough time to provide a lot of great material to inspire William Shakespeare. This class will cover the basics of what makes a Commedia dell' Arte style play: Stock characters, improvisation from a plot scenario, masks, and physical comedy. After Commedia, we'll cover Shakespeare, getting into the English Theatrical renaissance during the Tudor period. From the basic organization of theater troupes to doubling, fast memorization, and other common theatrical tools, we'll look at the elements of a play familiar to an Elizabethan audience. |

Leadership Challenges and Solutions
The SCA is a unique organization that can sometimes present challenges as we attempt to work together to follow the Dream. Whether one is an officeholder, a Peer, someone in an apprenticeship or a Squire, or simply a Gentle who steps up to volunteer, one may be faced with the challenges inherent in leading others. This class is a student-led, discussion- and scenario-based program of instruction in which small groups are presented with realistic, theoretical leadership challenges. Students will work together to devise solutions, which they will share with the rest of the class. This will provide interested persons the ability to work through problems and solutions in a classroom-based setting and gain insight and leadership tools that they can put into practice in their SCA life. After discussion, the instructor will link each scenario to further reading in leadership and management theory, and will provide a handout with the scenarios and a reading list for further learning. |

Oblong Chess
Oblong Chess is a Medieval Chess variant that was played in Persia from circa 850 to 1400. This version is a good introduction to Medieval Chess for players of modern (post-1490) chess. It is also a gentle introduction to the world of chess for those who have never played any form of chess before. The piece to be moved is determined by the throw of a die or pair of dice, which is a great equalizer of experts and novices. The game is played on an oblong board of 16 by 4 cells. The instructor will provide playing equipment for up to ten players: all participants will receive written instructions with the board design, to take home. This workshop will accommodate as many as ten participants. |
