Introduction to Natural Philosophy
In this course we will start by defining what we mean by Natural Philosophy. (To help you decide if you want to take the course or not: it encompasses physics, chemistry, geology, biology, and meteorology, among other subjects. No math is involved, though!) We will then spend some time talking about Natural Philosophy as taught by its founder, Aristotle. We will then examine Medieval Natural Philosophy as taught in the Universities of Oxford, Paris, and Bologna from 1200 to 1500. We will see how medieval natural philosophers went beyond Aristotle, discovered some principles that led to the Scientific Revolution, and formulated a few theories that have withstood the test of time and remain valid even today. |
