Renaissance Knife Fight: Bolognese Dagger of Achille Marozzo
Historical dagger is largely associated with either rondel ice-pick fights and grappling or being a parrying companion with a rapier. In Marozzo, however, we see a dagger system containing cuts, slices, and close-in trapping which appears to set itself apart in approach from most other historical dagger sources. In this class we will study the offline footwork of the Bolognese system along with some basic guard, cut, and thrust nomenclature. We will then work through the chapters of Marozzo's dagger vs dagger combat. At the end students should know the basics of Marozzo's dagger system and should begin to understand the role of both the attacks with the dagger and some basic prese (grappling) of the Bolognese system
Gear Requirements: A dagger simulator, preferably at least 10" in blade length. Some of the plays work better with a cross but a rondel simulator will suffice. Mask, gloves. |

Dance like the Valois-Improv dances for French Renn Guitar
Dance like the Valois: Improvised Dances for the music of the French Renaissance Guitar
No experience necessary! Many of these are simple dances we rarely do because they were either improvised or the exact steps are unknown. Come dance, play, listen, or all three! This class will focus on the dance music of the late period French Renaissance Guitar composers Adrian Le Roy and Guillaume Morlaye and their corresponding forms of dance in the 1589 French manual, Orchesographie. We'll cover the pavan, galliards, various bransles, branles gay, and--if we have time--tourdion. Johann will introduce and perform the music. Wenllyan will lead the dances. Come join us as we visit a time when the guitar rivaled (or surpassed) the lute in popularity in Renaissance France, and we dance to music composed for the instrument by the most famous guitarists of the day. |

Conflict Resolution Methods - People not Heraldry
Learn proven methods of resolving conflict between two people, both as a participant and a mediator. You will be able to take home two simple processes that can be used to facilitate a conversation between two people intending to clear up a conflict. Examples will be given and at least one practice conversation will be done during class. Methods based on the “Clearing Model†from Woman Within International with additional material from the book Crucial Conversations. The new SCA Anti-Bullying Policy has brought to light the importance of resolving conflicts ourselves before harsh consequences result. SCA members, officers, and leaders of all kinds can benefit from using these methods.
I learned these techniques from over 20 years working as a volunteer officer and participant in the Woman Within program (www.womanwithin.org) and close ties with the ManKind Project program (www.mkp.org). |

How to support the arts
A general discussion of what the MOAS office does and how everyone can help. This class is not just for MOAS officers but for everyone. The goal of this class is to get the more people presenting, sharing and participating in A&S at events and on the local, regional and kingdom levels. To take some of the scariness out of the arts and people doing the arts. This call is a replacement for MOAS 101 but you do not have to be or want to be a MOAS. |

SCA Heraldry for Non-Heraldic Cultures
Heraldry in Western Europe began to be formalized and regulated in the 12th century, but the use of sigils, symbols, totems, and other visual identification was still used by other regions and cultures throughout the world. Come perform a piece you want to perform. I personally don't care if it's period or not. I will judge you based purely on your technical abilities; ie, projective ability, enunciation, accuracy, etc. I don't care if you're a Peer or a novice (unless you got your peerage for singing/performing. If you got your peerage for that, then come judge. ) Be prepared to accept honest feedback that is not intended to make you so unhappy that you never want to perform again. I will, in the process, explain to you how to win and keep the attention of your audience. |

The Music of the Troubadours, for poets and bards
Poetry and music bring each other to life, and perhaps nowhere is this more true than in the songs of the troubadours. In this class, we will listen to and examine the music of the troubadours, paying special attention to how the poetry informs the realization of the melody. Students will learn how to find, read, and sing troubadour melodies, and will discuss and listen to historically appropriate accompaniment techniques. |

Introduction to Johann Georg Pascha's Rapier
Johann Georg Pascha published a book on rapier in 1661, heavily influenced by Italian rapier (He later went on to publish another book based on Fabris' tradition). The book is divided into 16 lessons - 8 on fencing with thrusts and 8 on fencing with cuts. This class will introduce student's to Pascha's material and focus on the second lesson on thrusts which works on high and low engagements on the outside line and the tactical choices that arise from them.
Students will work in pairs to practice each action, so full fencing gear will be required for this class. |

This class will immediately follow the Overview Class on How to make a pair of Side Lace Turn Shoes. Each student will have already received their Side-Lace Turn Shoes kit (Pattern, soles, instructions) and will have had the basic introduction on how to sew the shoes. Students should bring lightweight leather from home to use with the kits they purchased at the earlier class. I will also have leather with me if anyone needs some the day of the class. Be sure to bring your sewing machine (have knowledge on how to use the machine with a denim weight needle) and a pair of scissors. Students folks do not need to stay for the full 3 hours. I will be available to help them sew their shoes, but once done, they can go to another class if needed. |

Performing Poetry
Throughout history, poetry has been performed by bards, kings, and lovers, in halls, courts, and stolen moments. In this course, we will explore how to present powerful and moving performances of poetry. We will look at how poetic considerations such as meter, alliteration, and rhyme can inform your reading. We will also learn acting techniques that will help you connect with and communicate the meaning of the poem.
While this class focuses on poetry, many of the ideas we'll discuss are equally applicable to song and prose.
We will look at an assortment of poems from various times and cultures, but if there is a piece you are working on, please feel free to bring it to class! |

Introduction to Marcelli's Rapier and Dagger
Francesco Anotonio Marcelli's 1686 book on fencing is one of the most important books on Italian fencing ever written. It documents the Neopolitan fencing school made famous by Marcelli's grandfather, and laid much of the groundwork for classical and modern Italian fencing theory. Marcelli's treatment of rapier dagger is both systematic and practical and distinct from many other Italian masters approaches.
This clas will introduce students to Marcelli's Rapier and dagger system, which relies heavily on absence of blade, an 'annervated lunge' and attacks on an advance.
Students will work in pairs to practice each action, so full fencing gear will be required for this class. |

Shading for artists and illuminators 201
In this class we will continue exploring shadows and how to render them in 2D while creating the illusion of 3D. We will be dealing with shadows in color and more complex in shape than during the previous class. We will explore aspects that affect the depth and color of shadows and how translucency/transparency of objects affect shadows. The goal of the class is to develop a critical and analytical eye to shadows and use the knowledge to be able to render believable shadows even when you do not have an example to look at and copy from. We will take a peak at some period examples and maybe even critique some of them. |

Introduction to Longsword in the Liechtenauer Tradition
Johannes Liechtenauer: a mysterious master about whom we know about only through the writings of his disciples who encoded his martial art in a secret poem to be understood only by the initiated. While he sounds like a kung fu movie character, his poem, which covers unarmored longsword, armored combat, and mounted combat, along with the words of the students who explained its meaning gave us a fascinating tradition which HEMA and SCA practitioners puzzle through to this day.
In this class, we will cover the beginning advice of the zettel such as basic footwork, the basic fundamentals of nachreisen and ansetzen, and how to cut in such a way as to optimize not only cutting through another person but also to win the bind. Depending on time and the grasping of fundamentals, the class will finish with an illustration of Liechtenauer's principles of the bind through the play of zornhau-ort, "wrath hew-point."
