Introduction to Natural Philosophy in the Middle Ages
In this course we will start by defining what we mean by Natural Philosophy. (To help you decide if you want to take the course or not: it encompasses physics, chemistry, geology, biology, and meteorology, among other subjects. No math is involved, though!) We will then spend some time talking about Natural Philosophy as taught by its founder, Aristotle. We will then examine Medieval Natural Philosophy as taught in the Universities of Oxford, Paris, and Bologna from 1200 to 1500. We will see how medieval natural philosophers went beyond Aristotle, discovered some principles that led to the Scientific Revolution, and formulated a few theories that have withstood the test of time and remain valid even today. |

Topics in Natural Philosophy: Cosmology
"Cosmology is the study of the origin, structure, and space-time relationships of the
universe. In this course we will examine the state of cosmology in the Middle Ages.
We will begin by examining its origins with Aristotle and Plato. We will then develop
the “standard model” of the universe as understood during the Middle Ages. We will
then examine some of the problems that the Natural Philosophers of the Middle Ages investigated. Although the Introduction to Natural Philosophy course is helpful, it is not required. Also, no knowledge of mathematics, astronomy, or physics is required. |

Heraldic Design for Viking and Norse personas
This class is intended for gentles recreating a persona from the Nordic regions (Scandinavia, Iceland and those areas influenced by their culture) during the late 8th through early 12th centuries. Heraldry did not develop until the middle of our period, but there is no reason that a person wishing to study and recreate an earlier Norse persona should not be able to develop heraldic themes that draw from that culture while meeting requirements for SCA registration. During this class we will look at ideas to help you move beyond "typical" SCA heraldic designs into ones that draw on the rich culture of what is commonly called "the Viking era". |

Western Influences in East Asia: From Rome through the 14th Century
Did you know that the 5th century History of the Later Han describes the Roman empire and an embassy that arrived at the Chinese court in 166 CE? That we have extant Roman and Byzantine glassware found in China and dated to the Tang dynasty in the 6th-8th century? That in the 14th century the Roman Catholic Church boasted 6000 members in the archbishopric of Khanbalik (later Beijing), and at least five other cities? Come and explore the links between east and west, examining those links that were in place well before the "Age of Exploration" in the 15th and 16th centuries. |
