Recreating the English Woman's Gabled Hood
During the reign of Elizabeth of York, Henry VIII's mother, a bonnet style unique to English women appeared. Its exact shape - initially a sharply angled peak over the forehead and heavy black veil brightened only by a strip of ornately decorated fabric - evolved over the subsequent 50 years, but remained fashionable, as evidenced by the monumental brasses and carved stone effigies preserved in English churches. We will examine the shape of this distinctive bonnet and theorize about the materials and construction methods necessary to recreate it. This is intended to be an advanced class, however beginners are also welcome because you can always learn something. I plan to cover definitions of different weights of silks, fabric blends, types and weights of thread, different types of wool weaves and finishes, and even describe how they differed in value (rank of wearer allowed) in period. I also will cover hand sewing tools - choosing the correct needle, how to learn to use a thimble, how to cut a buttonhole with a chisel, what to look for in a sewing awl. |

The Loaf of Historical Bread: What Bread Was Really Like in the Medieval Period
While primary documentation of how bread was made in the medieval period in Europe is thin, there is a large collection of secondary sources that can be utilized to recreate a picture of what period bread was like. This class shows that documentation in depth, bringing to life what was eaten by both the peasant and the noble, focusing primarily on England between the 10th and 16th century but touching on the wider picture also. Herbalism: Magic or Medicine?
"The Anglo-Saxons called it magic. Today, we call it medicine. Using plants to heal wounds and illnesses goes back to even before the Vikings and the Anglo-Saxons! In this herbalism class, find out what was “magic” and what was medicine; what is history and what is myth. Would a woman really be burned at the stake for giving someone white willow bark for a headache? Did witches really use lotion by the fire to make them fly?! Come with your questions and listening ears, and learn about the magical history of herbalism in the Middle Ages.
*Please Note: We will be making a hands-on project in class with materials provided. Please direct any allergy concerns to Esa via her email esaingheandonnchaidh[at]yahoo[dot]com. Common allergens will be avoided, and special requests will be given best efforts to address, but promises cannot be made. Everyone takes responsibility for their own health when they attend the herbalism class. Class limit does not include parents or guardians who would like to accompany their youth to the Page's Academy. It is kindly requested they not make their own craft project to save materials for the pages. Donations accepted to offset cost of materials provided for the craft project." |

Ryori Monogatari: The Story of Food
An exploration of the first English translation of "Ryori Monogatari"--the story of food. Published in 1643 (though some scholars say the original may have been written as early as 1610), it is the first true recipe book that find, and a key source in helping us unravel pre-modern Japanese food. It is equally interesting for what it says as what it doesn't. There are recipes with clear ties to European dishes, though most are purely Japanese. In this hour we will briefly go over the translation, which is now online and available for anyone to use. |

Period-ic Sewing Table: Choosing Material Elements for Better Costume Construction
Will this fabric drape the way the gown in that portrait does? What thread should I use for this garment? Gathering the right materials is essential to getting beautiful results from your costuming efforts. This in-depth class is for students with a deep interest in sewing clothes, especially hand sewing them, although sewers who prefer machines and interested beginners are welcome. The class will cover terms and uses for fabrics including different weights of linens, different weaves of wool, different qualities of silk, and other fibers such as cotton and rayon. We will examine how to select and employ useful notions such as threads and tape. We will also discuss the importance of choosing quality tools for sewing such as needles, thimbles, scissors, and awls. We will consider the differences in materials used to construct outer layers, linings and interlinings, courtly garments and everyday clothes. Although we will primarily discuss period fabrics, we will also look at some modern substitutes and penny-saving measures. The first 20 students can purchase a materials sample card. |

Fermentation: Historical Preservation Techniques
"Fermentation has been used to preserve foods for eons. Fermentation turns sugars into alcohol. Bread uses fermentation to create leavening. Fermentation turns milk into yogurt. Fermentation turns raw meat into sausages. The most amazing thing is that fermentation is EASY; it's using the natural bacteria, already in the air around us or waiting on our food, to overcome and exclude the bacteria harmful to humans while also improving the quality, longevity, and edibility of the food itself. Students will learn what is occurring in our foods when we culture them and how to use this technique to make historical foodstuffs such as bread, beer, wine, sauercrauts, yogurts and more.
