This class demonstrates learning to pull a calligraphy script from the period work of your exemplar and not have to rely on modern how to do calligraphy books. Only students 16 years old and older may attend this class.

Lecture and discussion on selecting fabric, reading patterns, threading and operation of a sewing machine. This class is geared for men in the SCA to enhance their understanding of garb making and to understand the basics of garb making. This class is geared towards men but women may attend.

This class will explain what is happening in this game including: the people & culture of Atlantia; expectations; creating your persona; and how to get involved. If you are new to the SCA, come meet others and get your questions answered.

Where and when did coffee emerge as a favorite drink? Come learn about the history of coffee. Then learn how to make it and taste period “kavi”. No cost for the class but small kits will be available for purchase at the end.

An introductory-level class covering basic history of Commedia dell' Arte, the 16th century Italian improvisational comic theater, and its stock characters with opportunities to play short scenes to try them out. We will play some theater improv games, so all students will participate! We'll also cover how to make commedia happen in the modern SCA.

Students will learn vocal techniques to improve projection while saving their voices at outdoor venues and tactics for capturing and holding the attention of the audience.

An in-depth discussion of Court Protocol. Who follows Whom, who sits where, and who does what. Primary focus on arranging the thrones in proper precedence order. Class will include hands-on application based on real-life scenarios. A handy class for heralds, retainers, and anyone interested in learning how to arrange the big chairs in the front of the room.

A session discussing how fighting with spear in armor is similar to rapier and how it is different. This will provide a good grounding on what is necessary to authorize on the armored field with spear so a fighter can support the Queens Spears

We will cover an overview of everything you need to know to get started striking your own coins. The first half of the class will be a lecture/discussion format covering these general topics. Making punch tools and prepare the die blanks. The process of laying out the designs and sink them on the dies. The various materials and processing to make the coin blanks. And, of course the striking the designs into coins. The last part of class will be striking coins using dies and blanks provided by the instructor. You will be able to take the coins you strike with you.

No experience necessary. These dances all follow a simple pattern of doubles, siding, and arming, with the same chorus between each. All steps will be covered.

Practical class on handling weapons on the field with games reset

In this class, you will learn how to make a simple pair of straight knitting needles and then we will go over the basics of knitting. We begin with types of yarn, what information is on the label of the yarn, and then the cast on, knit stitch and bind off. In other words, we will answer the questions: how to get the yarn on the needles, knit, and how to get the project off the needles.

Bring your own raw fleece or one will be provided. Learn processing from skirting to washing and carding.

Have you ever looked at the rapier field and thought, “well that looks like fun”! Good News, you were right! Best of all its easy to get started, and probably even more fun then you thought it was. In this class we will go over the Atlantian rapier traditions, what it takes to get started, how to get started, the different gear you will see and use, a brief overview of the rules, authorizations and why they are not so bad, an introduction period and modern references and we’ll cap it all off with a Q&A session. You’ll also leave with a copy of my SCA rapier 101 manual (which covers everything you need from how to stand through your authorization) and a period manual (see how the wacky 16th century Italians did it) This is a non-fighting class designed for those who are 16+ and want to get started in SCA rapier.

This class will go over the history of spinning and give hands-on instructions for how to spin yarn on a drop spindle. I hope you will join us on our journey into fiber! At the end of the class, the student should have a basic knowledge of spinning throughout the SCA period, basic knowledge on types of fiber and spinning tools, and should be able to spin a basic yarn on a drop spindle. The class will include a handout and wool for the student to spin with. Drop spindles will be provided for use in class and may be purchased after the class for $6 if the student wishes. Students may bring their own drop spindle if they own one. Lecture on the history of wholecloth quilting during the Medieval period, followed with a hands on class to make a basic quilted piece with both Italian quilting (trapunto) and basic running stitch quilting. Class will focus on quilting used primarily for household items, but skills can be used in garment construction. Will include a kit. It is recommended that all participants bring a thimble.

Pysanky are beautiful intricate looking wax resist dyed eggs that are surprisingly easy to learn! We will cover the history and basic how-to of pysanky design while writing eggs using modern dyes, and briefly discuss natural dyestuffs appropriate to our period. Material fees will cover a set of tools for each student to take home.

Making Furniture From Tree to Furniture – In this class I will teach how using just hand tools how to turn wood into a piece of period furniture. I will show how to split a log into billets, show how to use a broad hatchet and other tools to define the shape. A shaving horse will be used. If time is permitting a spring pole lathe will be used.

A discussion of the foods and food traditions of Northern Italy and Venice Tasting menu from dishes translated and redacted from Cristoforo di Messisbugo’s Banchetti; A cookbook published in 1549 Venice.

We will take several beads found throughout the SCA period and walk through how they might be reproduced. We will create one of each bead. Students should be familiar with basic bead construction methods.

Exchequer 101 and 201 are required for being a warranted exchequer and deputy exchequer. This course covers the documentation needed to get started as an exchequer, what is required to hold the office and the rules and responsibilities of the office. This class is also open to anyone interested in becoming an exchequer or seneschals who want exchequer training.

This class is an into into basic blacksmithing. The student will learn to forge a taper and and a bend to create a tent stake.

Come learn the basics of how to cut down a pig into useful parts. Learn the basic cuts and experience the thrill of helping cut down the pig. Parts of the pigs will be used throughout the rest of the day for classes on sausage making, lard rendering, soap making, and candle making. Bring your own sharp knives, if you have some you want to use, as well as an apron and a cooler. Students will be able to take some pork home with them from the class.

Step by step process on making period oak/iron gall ink. Bring a dip pen if you wish to try some. I have a few but might not have enough of them. Only students 16 years old and older will be allowed in the class.

Lecture and discussion on selecting fabric, patterns, and clothing styles for persona. This will focus on proper research in setting up a persona and how to properly outfit yourself. This class is geared for men in the SCA though women are welcome to attend.

What are the traditional courtesies used in the SCA? This class provides explanations of SCA methods of address, court behavior, and dealing with several cultures and time periods while playing your game. Walking with books on one’s head not required.

Discover how Arabic language was used in period, and how to incorporate it into SCA life. You will gain skills to speak, read, and write easy but important sight words. Participants will leave with resources to inscribe Arabic onto garb, banners, armor, scrolls, and anything else. No prior knowledge of Arabic required. We will discuss WHAT a Bard was compared to other period performers, and what a Bard is and should know in the Modern Middle Ages. We will also discuss WHERE and WHEN Bards can perform.

Improvisation skills can improve anyone’s portrayal of their persona, execution of court shtick, and everyday conversations. Not just for the period theater art of commedia dell’ arte, improvisation skills can benefit everyone. This class will teach basic improv skills through group and solo theater games. Sophia the Orange has been trained by the Washington Improv Theater in Washington DC, the most advanced commedia teachers in the SCA, and practiced improv for 16+ years. All students are guaranteed to pick up something useful in this class.

What is is, what it ISN'T, and how to survive the process.

For those who already have a harp, but have no idea where to begin, fear not! This basic class will get you glissing and striking chords in no time. I will have my harp with me to help with teaching and examples, but this course will work best if you bring your own harp. nonetheless, if you are curious, don't let your lack of harp dissuade you! We'll be going over proper finger positions, the different parts of a harp, how to best play chords, and some other basic concepts, as well as any other points that participants need help on. BYOH if you are able to, but again, don't let that keep you from taking this course if you need it.

An overview of the the 6 different types of glass arts done in the SCA, looking at techniques and terminology

This beginner class is meant for the brand new archer. We will have loaner gear available. We'll learn about equipment, safety and basic shooting technique. Youth involved in the class need to have parents involved as well.

"We will go over the format of the tournament, scoring, judges and marshalling. This will include a practical exercise with 30 second bouts provided there is enough participation. Bring your gear."

Town Battle Tactics / Strategy / Logistics. Class will be taught according to participants, ie, siege / combat archery will be incorporated as much as possible.

Writing a scroll text is an exercise in creativity while maintaining standards and protocols that are required by the nature of scrollwork. Come and learn how to fulfill both sides of the equation!

Perhaps you just want to spin as a part of your personae, or do you want to make garments? Attend this hand on practicum to understand how to achieve your spinning dreams. Fiber will be available. A look at Persian women’s clothing as seen in 16th Century illuminations of the Safavid Dynasty.

Maybe you'd like your act to be more authentic and don't know how to approach it? Maybe you perform lots of period material and want your audience to appreciate it more. Maybe you just want to impress the bejeezus out of some laurels.

We will discuss physical and some vocal exercises to use to warm up with before and after a vocal performance.

At one time or another almost all of us have thought about merchanting at an event. But what does it take? This class will talk about preparation, set up, philosophy, pricing, costing, travel, taxes, licenses, success, and failures. With real world examples the class will discuss merchants from blanket to mega-mall. No previous merchant experience is required to take this class since we have all gone shopping. We’ll start there. Presenter background: Lady Birna has been a merchant in the SCA for over 35 years. She has sold her own wares, other’s creations, and store purchased items. She has merchanted at TYC, TFYC, Pennsic, Estrella, Lillies, Gulf, WOW, Fools, and local events from Korea, through Germany, and all the Continental Kingdoms. With stories, examples, and a background in Marketing Management as a Business Professor she brings real world cases to a seldom discussed section of the SCA. Bring a chair, a note book, and questions.

A survey of the history of prostitution from the late Roman era to 1600 ce. We will be covering such topics as the formation of red light districts, brothel management, contraception, municipal laws, church law, and the garb and identification of a prostitute. Handouts are free on CD. Absolutely no one under 18 admitted.

An introduction to armorial heraldry cultures from a wide range of non-European cultures and a discussion of how to interpret those practices into SCA European heraldry styles.

he Renaissance recorder is a handy, light-weight, and versatile musical instrument. Learn how to play a soprano, alto, or tenor recorder. You don't even need to know how to read music! I have only a few recorders, so please bring your own if you have one. Fingering charts will be provided. Sheet music will also be provided if you wish, and you can record the teacher to remember how the songs go so you can practice at home. We will learn dance tunes so you can play for dances at events! Class is for ages 10 and up

Basic class for those who've never participated in thrown weapons and would like to learn

This class will cover basics such as footwork, guards, parries, tempo, measure, and offense. Please bring a sword and gloves if you can. Limited loaner gear will be available as well. If you have extra equipment, please bring that too.

Best use of combat archery / siege in heavy melee situations.

There are a plethora of texts on modern brewing (and several worth reading), but many "historical" texts take up post-period (1650+), covering emerging technologies. This class will discuss the major differences between the Medieval and modern brewer, and how life in these current middle ages impacts our re-creations.

Learn how to make sausage from whole meat cuts. We will be making sausage mixed and ground by hand as well as using a grinder. We will have some sample medieval recipes for making sausage.These will be uncased to give us more time to look at the different spice blends. Each student will have the chance to make some sausage themselves and take some home. Please bring a cooler with an ice pack if you want to take some sausage home.

Working with the fat from the pig butchering class, we'll discuss both wet and dry rendering methods, the difference between lard produced from each method and from various parts of the pig and the historical uses for the finished product. We will render as much lard as we can get from the butchering. Bringing your own sharp knives and cutting boards is a plus but not necessary. You should bring an apron to protect your garb.

SCAdians have been learning dance and music of SCA period and creatively using the style of period music and dance to create their own works of art for 50 years now. Johann wrote music and Sophia choreographed a pavane in the style of Arbeau in honor of Countess Adelhait. That Pavane will be presented in this class along with other SCAdian choreographies including Heralds In Love and one from Sophia’s band’s: Dafydd’s Delight.

So I made a tunic, but I want something more fitted. Now what?" You have come to the right place! We will make a pattern for a fitted kirtle, also known as a petticoat bodies. This can deliver worn on its own, or as an underdress with many different later period dresses. All you need are basic sewing skills. Supply list : 1 yard of fabric to make the pattern which becomes the lining Basic sewing notions, pins, tape measure, marking pencil or pen, scissors, needle and thread.

Make a felted pill box type hat (wet felting)

Join Lady Jóra í Holti in discovering the art of basket making! We will go over a brief history of basketry and then dive right in making our baskets. Class cost includes handout and supplies to make a small woven melon basket. Everyone should leave class with completed or nearly completed basket and the knowledge to make more.

The student will learn the basics of Bobbin Lace. They will learn how to read a pattern and will have hands on twisting and turning threaded bobbins and pinning against a pillow to create lace.

Are you having trouble getting your beads off the mandrel? Does your glass change colors inadvertently while you are forming your bead? Are your beads just not right? Bring your set up and some of the beads you have had trouble with. We will walk though what you are doing, figure out what's happening and fix it. All skill levels welcome.

Broad overview of medieval bookbinding techniques, sample materials and equipment to view & detailed handout for reference. You will create your own small journal with a limp leather (longstitch) binding, circa 14th century Germany. All supplies included. No fee.

Lecture ​on period patchwork as used for both heraldic and decorative purposes in fashion as well as on household items. Lecture will be followed by demonstration and workshop. Three kits will be available for students to choose from, although students may choose to purchase all three ($10 each). Paper instructions for all three are free. All kits will have materials to make a small pouch.

A hands on class for 5 smiths to make a basic set of blacksmithing tongs. This is an intermediate class and the ability to forge a taper is a prerequisite.

An overview of modern tools and how we use them to create period Stained Glass pieces. What all is needed in a basic kit, and where you might be able to find them, as well as basic pricing. Will also go over how to cut glass, fit the lead channel and solder together a small sun catcher for each to take home. I will have handouts available after class for anyone who cannot attend. Cord is a fundamental SCA essential, whether you are lacing a bodice, using a drawstring on your pouch, making medallion cords, creating trim, and many other applications. Cording is great hand candy for long courts! Overcome frustrations you have had with your lucet, or learn some fancy cording tricks, like flat herringbone cord. Double lucet, kumihimo and finger-loop braiding may also be discussed. Fish your lucet out of the bottom of your basket, dust it off, and make some cord now! All skill levels welcome. String will be available. Bring your own lucet. Limited number of lucets to lend.

This class is for both performers and the event staff that wants to work with them. When event staff wants to get music, dance, shtick, or other performing arts into their event, there are precautions you need to take to ensure the final performance is what you want. When performers want time and space from event staff to enjoy their art at SCA events, there are precautions you need to take to ensure the final performance is what you want. I’ve performed music, dance, theater, and misc schtick for over 20 years in the SCA including running the Performing Arts Program at the SCA 50 Year Event, and I’ll share how performers can work with SCA event staff to get spotlight time in a way that serves the whole event instead of just one’s ego. Performers of all levels can serve kings, autocrats, the populace, and the SCA mission as well as their own artistic calling with a few precautions.

You've been performing around the SCA for a while and have finally decided you are indeed a "bard". Let's go beyond the basics and discuss ways to improve your repertoire, your performance, and take it to the next level.

The class will discuss the two tools, the sȯl-skuggafjöl and the sólarsteinn, that are historically noted in sagas and archaeological digs as well as the bearing dial, twilight board, and a more observational technique of polar mirages used by the early Norse sailors as they explored the North Atlantic waters. Examples of all devices will be shown and there will be a question/answer/touchy feely section at the end.

I Modi (The Ways), also known as The Sixteen Pleasures is a famous erotic book of the Italian Renaissance in which a series of sexual positions were explicitly depicted in engravings. We will examine images from this work and others that explore sexual art for its own sake. Because of the nature of the class, absolutely no one under the age of 18 is allowed to attend.

An in-depth look at all the different types of submissions processed by the SCA College of Arms, including many that even seasoned Heralds might be surprised to learn about.

This class will cover selected play's from Fiore dei Liberi's Zogho Stretto of his Sword in Two Hands.

Class format will be by student request. IE, if there's something you just don't understand about melee, this is your chance to ask.

Learn this amazingly easy technique used to preserve fruits and vegetables. The process hasn't changed much in a thousand years! Lactobacillus is the byproduct of the fermentation process. It gives the tang to a dill pickle and puts the sour in sauerkraut. At the end of the class you'll have a jar of vegetables to take home.

No experience necessary. We will cover some of the most-often done, including Petit Riens. All steps will be covered.

How to, down right dastardly fun! (bring your horse, can watch if you don't have a horse)

Demonstration of converting malt barley and hops into wort, which in turn ferments into beer. This process involves large periods of time watching liquid become and/or remain hot, during which a discussion of brewing is fairly requisite. Drop by for ten minutes, or stay through all four hours - either way beer will be made! As it will be several days before any alcohol is actually produced, this is open to all ages, but (as stated above) this does involve fire and up to nine gallons of boiling liquid - children should remain under close parental supervision. Those of legal drinking age are encouraged to bring/share/critique anything brewed. 1 hour of credit for each hour attending

Have you ever wondered what those folks are doing behind the royals? Want to know what kind of job retaining is or how to become a retainer? Come take this class. Mistress Fiona will explain the ins and outs of retaining and help you know what to expect if you volunteer at any level.

This class is for people very new to sewing/and or the SCA. In this class you will learn how to take measurements for, and make a pattern for, a simple Viking T-Tunic. If time allows discussion of and demonstration of Viking seaming will occur. Please bring tape measures, scissors to cut paper, something to write with and on.

Instruction and review of basic terminology, pattern instructions, pattern layout and hand stitches. Hands on: basic stitches (as time allows). Materials fee is optional. Children under 10 must have a supervising adult.

A survey of the clothing worn by the upper class Ottoman in the 16th Century. Discussion will focus on examples in period art and writings of foreign travelers to the Empire. Books will be available for review during the class.

Students will learn the lyrical and musical elements of period style ballads and learn simple techniques for composition.

This class will discuss those situations in bardic where nerves get in the way. The class will cover symptoms and causes of stage fright/performance anxiety, and discuss how to deal with that anxiety.

A survey of the history of roses from ancient times through the present, a discussion of which varieties of roses were grown in period and how modern roses differ from period roses.

Who were the Franciscans, Jesuits, Domenicans? Why were there several orders? How did they relate to the Pope? What about the Irish monks on Kells or Lindisfarne?

This will be an introduction to five of the most common drum patterns in Middle Eastern drumming. Bring your drum and be prepared to make some noise. No limit to students, but there will be a limited amount of practice drums.

With bread and cheese, we can feed the masses - learn some easy cheese recipes, taste samples, and see the magic of curds and whey happen before your eyes.

This is the basic required course to become warranted as an Atlantian Minister of the Lists. We will cover all the new procedures that have just started, as well as the new forms, event prep, reports, and common issues encountered at the MoL tables.

This will be a review of the plays as identified in I.33 and how to apply the to C&T combat in the SCA.

Using beef fat we will learn hands on how to make candles.

These are from 1500 England but are different from the English Country dances you have seen. Fun and easy to learn. No experience necessary.

Military maneuvers and how to get everyone moving at the same time... Must have horse to participate

The student will learn the components of a period glove and what characteristics make it a period glove, materials used to make one, the pattern design of the hand, the layout of the pattern on an animal hide for the leather gloves, the construction of the pieces and the tools used to do so. There will be discussion on the types of gloves and their decoration through the medieval centuries. We may even explore information about the English glove guilds and how their influence on commerce affected the glove trade between England and France. Each student will receive a mini-sewing kit to experience hands on sewing of leather. This interactive class helps the student understand the period glove. The information for the class was developed from a personal thirty-year study of the period glove, to include two trips to England for a close examination at the Victoria and Albert Museum. I want to share what I learned from the over 100 pair of gloves I have made. So, if you too have passion for the glove or mitten, join me in my "glove affair"

The required class for target archery marshals-in-training, and for serving marshals to renew their warrants. Covers ALL target archery rules, administrative procedures, and range safety zones, with demonstrated and hands-on equipment inspection. Current Blue Cards are required.

On the curing and smoking of meat at home. Modern food safety with a perspective on medieval practice, finishing with a detailed instruction in the art of making of bacon. Handout of formulas explaining the calculation of dry and brine cures for different types of products, and a recipe for a basic, safe bacon cure. There will be bacon.

This class will teach you how to knit using two or more colors of yarn in the same project. Students will learn how to manage more than one color at a time to avoid tangles, as well as how to read colorwork knitting charts. Students will be expected to have a grasp of common knitting terms, as well as know how to cast on, knit in the round, and bind off. Please come to class with 60 stitches cast on and joined in the round, and have two rows of stockinette stitch completed. I suggest US7 DPNs or circular needles and worsted weight yarn. This will allow for the majority of class to practice the technique.

Officers and the BOD: What in the world do they do?Have you ever wondered what the Board of Directors for the SCA does or what all these officers do? What about how to become an officer? This class will explain the more mundane aspects of SCA governance including what all these jobs are and how you can get involved.

Review of basic terminology, hand stitches, and construction techniques. Hands on: cutting fabric, pinning, pleating,and hand stitching Tam or muffin style cap to fit YOU! Most materials to be provided. (limited number of scissors available in class).

Learn fun and easy belly dance moves and combinations that will have you dancing at the Halfa Saturday night.

A roundtable discussion led by Master Efenwealt Wystle, Lady Sophia the Orange and Lord Johann von Solothurn. Come join in the discussion of research in music, poetry, storytelling, dance, theatre and other performing arts. We'll share some of our favorite sources and talk about where you can go to find your own material.

We will discuss how to plant and grow varieties of roses that were grown in period. I will cover where to find period varieties, how to plant and care for them, what to do about pests (both insect and diseases), and, if there is time, propagating rose plants.

Building a Shaving Horse – if you are trying to make a chair, bow or barrel, a shaving horse is an essential tool. I have found over the years that shaving horses can vary from being great to bordering on the dangerous. This class will show various examples and construction techniques that will enable you to make a solid long lasting shaving bench.
